Title: Social Application - Paladin (DPS/Healer) - Hoycules
Post by: Applicant on June 08, 2017, 10:11:19 pm
Hello, Iron Edge!

I am applying to be a social member.

Character: Hoycules
Armory: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/Kazzak/Hoycules/advanced
Class/Spec: Paladin (DPS/Healer)
Member Type: social

Personal Info:

Benjamin, 24, Helsinki (I am Danish though), studying Bachelor's Degree in Business Information Technology.

I have been playing the game for a little over 10 years, and I have slowly gotten more and more serious about the PvE side of it. In my spare time I play basketball and it has caused me to have several breaks from the game, but as I have been playing less basketball, I have really gotten into raiding as the teamwork it requires to succeed is really similar, and it is what I enjoy the most.

I am currently raiding on Defias Brotherhood on my Demon Hunter (Mythoran), but as I have been slowly enjoying the class less and less since basically EN, and the level of dedication in our raid team has been declining, I am now in search of new adventures. Which is why I have decided to roll Paladin and start completely fresh on Kazzak.

Class/Spec:

Raiding - Retribution Paladin; I decided to roll for Ret Paladin as I enjoy the role of melee dps during raids and wanted something that was a bit less rng than demon hunter. I have always enjoyed playing paladin and retribution in particular, so I am happy that I've finally come to the decision to make it my main raiding spec.

M+ - Prot/Holy/Ret; For dungeons I like to play whatever is needed and I like the freedom of a class than can fill all three roles.

Alts:

I have no other characters on Kazzak, nor am I currently planning on leveling any since I want to put my focus 100% on getting my Paladin as geared and raid ready as possible.
I am considering transfering my 900 ilvl Hunter from Defias Brotherhood, but this is very uncertain.

Professions:

Herbalism / Enchanting. Currently I am running these to gather up some gold as I am starting from scratch on this realm, once I ding 110 I am planning to go for Alchemy / Herbalism. I like Alchemy as it allows me to craft my own flasks and potions, and help out group members if someone needs anything.

Raiding/PVP Experience:

Despite playing the game since early TBC, I didn't start properly raiding until the release of Dragon Soul in Cataclysm. Playing resto shaman I managed to kill Deathwing heroic with my guild. During the time between the end of our Dragon Soul progression and MoP a lot of guildies left and our raid team stopped raiding, towards the end of the expansion most players came back to the game and we managed to get Ahead of the Curve: Lei Shen.
Due to being busy with basketball I didn't play the game more than a couple hours a week and at a very casual level until the very end of WoD where I did manage to get ahead of the curve: archimonde, but as we started to progress Mythic, 2 officers left and we disbanded before we even got started.
In Legion I've been raiding since EN and have so far 7/7M - 2/3M - 9/10M.

Previous Guilds:

Bee-Hive - Twisting Nether. (Cataclysm/MoP/start-wod). Raid team was very unstable after end Cataclysm and disbanded when guild/raid leader quit the game in early wod.

Saníty - Defias Brotherhood. (Legion). Been part of raid team 2 since founding in the middle of EN, we quickly managed to get through HC and start Mythic progression, but ever since we've been struggling with roster issues. As more founding member left and more new has come in, the focus and dedication have been declining. Finally in NH when we midways had half the team leave we acquired half of a team from another guild. Since then it seems like more people are there for memes and fun rather than actually progressing. I like fun during raids, but not during pulls when it actually hinders progress, which is why I am now in the process of leaving.

Availability:

Currently I have summer break from uni until end of august and is available pretty much 24/7. Once uni starts again I will have most nights free except the nights I have basketball practice (1-2 times a week).

Communication:

I consider my english skills pretty good, I am currently studying in english speaking university so I am very used to talking in English.
I have teamspeak 3 and a working headset with mic (logitech g930).

Computer / Connection:

Computer is only a few years old and run a geforce 970. My fps is usually around 60-80 in-game depending on settings, can get it higher, but rarely find it needed.
Internet connection is 100mbps down and 20 up, ping around 20 ms on Kazzak, never had any issues with disconnecting or lag.

Addons/UI:

Elvui - Using it because I like how easy it is to setup and change position of different elements with the grid.
Skada - Mainly use it to keep track of my own dps to see if I am doing what I should be and to track things like interrupts or damage taken depending on the encounter. I don't use the dps meter for competing against others, more as a guideline for myself to see if I am doing what I usually am, and if not, why.
Clique - for healing, works very well with elvui and is easy to use.
DBM - Always used DBM over BigWigs, no particular reason, just like the feel of it better.
Shadowed Unitframes - for raid frames as dps - was easiest way for me to make the raid frame go out in the side so it doesn't get in the way of my view.

Screenshot: as I am still leveling my paladin I don't have a screenshot of my ui in raid, so ill link a picture of my Demon Hunter ui. I am using the same setup and keybinds for my ret anyways.

Other Games:

Since Legion I haven't really spent much time in other games, but when I do it is a very spread array of games such as; CS:GO, Football Manager, Civ, Fifa, nba 2k, Fallout.. the list goes on.

Why Iron Edge?

The reason I am applying for Iron Edge over many other is that more than just a raiding team, I am looking for a place to call "home". I have since wod been bouncing around servers and failed to find a place to stay every time. When I decided to leave my current guild, it was very hard to narrow down where to go and what to look for. But when I came across your page on wowprogresss and then your website I decided this was the place I felt had what I've been looking for, not just semi-hardcore raiding, but also community. Which is why I without hesitation chose to come to Kazzak.

What can I offer Iron Edge?

This is always the hardest part for me, but basically I just love the game, and the adventures it brings with it. I not only take my raiding serious and prepare accordingly, but I also like to spend time with guildies outside of the raid, whether it be dungeons or running old content.

Where did I hear about Iron Edge?

I found your wowprogress guild site as I was trying to find a 2-day raiding guild that was located on a more popular server than I am currently on.

Last Words?

I am currently applying as Social since that is what I was suggested by Rashkebab as I whispered him in-game, seeing that I am still leveling and gearing. But I do intend on applying for a spot on the raid team as soon as I am ready for it, as it is my goal to stay active in progression raiding.

Hi there Hoycules!

This is a very nice application! Have you stopped raiding in your other guild yet, or do you have that planned? I noticed that you're progressing on Gul'dan, is he going down before ToS?

Looking down the line for a raiding position, I think you'll fit into the roster as a ret paladin. But we'll cross that bridge when we get to it. In regards to the level seriousness, we do our best to find a good balance between having fun and getting good progress and I hope that it will be more in line with what you're looking for compared to your current group.

Hi,
Thank for for your reply.

I am currently still raiding with them (Though on Gul'dan I am not in every time as we are currently rotating what melee gets to come to see what works best). I am certainly hoping to get Gul'dan down before TOS (we have had some decent Illidan phase pulls), but we are currently struggling with attendance and scrambling around raid days and times so it might be a long shot, especially since I might be unlucky enough that the kill pull is while I'm out of the group and I think a re-kill might be hard with the new patch coming next reset.

I am planning to stop raiding with the team as we finish in Nighthold, as we should have enough melee on trial to replace me going into tomb. With that said though, I do not want to leave them in a bad position, so if they need me because of people not showing up before I have my Paladin geared anyways, I would probably step in as backup.

Sorry to ask but, can you confirm you are keeping your current main char in the guild if they need you so that you can help them out? Whilst still having your paladin in this guild?

As for the ret pala can you go through your rotation for both single and air target fights.

Other than those questions I got nothing to add nice apply good luck.

Yes of course, I guess I need to clarify that part a bit better.

Firstly, I have for a while now (basically since ToV launch) wanted to stop playing on my Demon Hunter, but as we constantly had roster issues so I stuck with it despite not enjoying it. That's why I am planning on leaving it behind and starting completely fresh, meaning I already consider my Paladin as my main character now.

Secondly, I made the decision to leave the guild already more than a month ago, but decided I would finish NH with them as I didn't want to cause the people that have been there as long as me to have further roster issues. I had hoped that there would have been a larger gap between our Gul'dan kill and ToS so that the process of changing guild would be smoother, it was only because I came across your wowprogress page I decided to go for the move now and place my Paladin on Kazzak in the hopes of a trial in Iron Edge when I would have my new character ready.

I am not planning to transfer over any of my characters to Kazzak as I don't have the resources to do that, but I do not intend to stay an active member in my old guild. (I have 8 110 characters on the server I am planning to keep there for gold making to buy game-time, so they will probably stay in the guild just to talk to the people i've played with).

The scenario I was thinking was that something like next couple of weeks while I am still not even geared to trial for you guys, if they are 20 minutes past raid time and need a dps I'd go help them. (it is highly unlikely though as I am already giving up a lot of responsibilites and making myself a lot more "replaceable").

I hope that it makes sense. I might just be over complicating something that won't ever happen. Loyalty is just very important to me and I wouldn't want to leave the team on a bad note.
With that said though, my Paladin (and a potential Trial for you) will be what I put all my effort into.

As for ret pala rotation, I am still only 106, so most of my rotation knowledge is still theory as I haven't had much time 'testing' it besides dungeons and such. I have spent a lot of time reading up on the class and how to play it. Reason I chose paladin is I've been following streamers who played it and liked it a lot, so through that I've also tried to learn how to play it. (I do realize it will takes lots of practice to master it, fortunately I have summer break and can spend the time required to do it).

Ret pala is very depending on the damage dealt during burst, so main focus is using proper abilities while wings are up.

Single target -
opener: pre-pot old war - blade of justice - crusader strike/zeal - judgement - (crusade) + wings - execution sentence / templar's verdict - wake of ashes - templar's verdict.

Key is to never over-cap holy power (generated through blade of justice - crusader strike / Zeal - wake of ashes) and use judgement before spending it (Execution sentence and Templar's Verdict).

Aoe - Basically the same but spending holy power with Divine Storm instead. (Divine Hammer talent is also an option depending on the fight)

Both might have to be tweaked to fit whatever legendaries I get.

Very few abilites and cooldowns, but using them correctly and efficiently is key, especially during wings.

I like the answers.

I would advise against using execution sentence particularly when you get your BiS legendaries. Zeal again is ideal where multi adds for large parts of fights. The go to would be divine hammer and fire of crusade and templars verdict as talent choices.

I understand why you're thinking of zeal and execution in there respected single target an ape rotations, also divine hammer seems to aim better than blade of justice as each tick has a chance to crit and generally does more damage constantly than blade.

Anywho I like what I read, as long as you don't get guilt tripped by staying with your chars in what would be your old guild which may well happen. That's my only concern other than that good luck.

Thanks for the advice, much appreciated, will definitely help me when I get to fool around with the practice dummy once I get some more traits and some legendaries.

I see what you mean, we've had a lot of people either leave to raid for other teams or to stop raiding completely that still stayed in the guild as socials just for the chats, so there has generally been a good understanding and support of people chosing to go other places.

I'll make sure that never happens. there has been a Danish guy as the president of this guild (You know therash is CEO) for several years and I would never allow terrible Danishness to take over.

Hey dude,

Can you tell me what progress your team 2 have in Saníty?

I checked logs and it looks like you were the main raid in Saníty when you got your Star Augur and Elisandre kill.  Did you trial in the main raid in Saníty?

Hi,

Sorry I only saw this now.

Team 2 is still 9/10 Mythic. I haven't trialed with Team 1 and did Elisande with team 2. I only have one kill on Elisande and Augur as we started extending after getting them down.
