Server went down due to accidental GerĂ°ur.

I've reloaded the game, please try to log in and see if you can keep going with your civilization whenever you have the time, this'll let us test the recovery capabilities.

bitch please its a different type of game

as far as i understand civ isnt all about churning out units to kill shit but diplomacy and research n shit

As far as i understand Hug clearly showed you civ can be all about pushing out units asap so you win before diplomacy and research and shit comes along  :P

So, I normally work Saturdays, though its normally just the morning. However sometimes I do work the afternoon too, and I think I am needed until 3pm uk time this Sat. I will try and see if it can be changed, but if not I can't make it until after 3pm UK time.

Is it possible to do it Thursday evening or sometime Friday? or will that conflict to much with raids/whatever?

I would like to be part of it!

Mega fail tonight. Cwave still couldn't play, even on Hamachi. Must have a seriously screwed network.

Go with whoever is online tomorrow (Thursday) evening... quick start!
Now I run a tech website.

Game went OK...!

A bit slow in parts, but I think we can blame a lack of single-player experience for that.

Definitely drags on a bit for single-night play... perhaps two nights per game could work, or just do the iron man thingee.

Was a bit fun, but I prefer a games that are a bit more "skillbased" :p

Reminds be a lot of Risk, getting the shit kicked out of you if two people decides to take you on at the same time ):< PALMAR AND CHIPPEN! >:(

Diplomacy is much more valuable than twitchy fingers, Civ4 is a very skill-based game. If you find yourself getting kicked by two people at once a lot in games like that, you're doing something wrong.

And here's a tip to all the people that are worse than I at this: I may be wrong but I think Civ4 favors defending heavily, so all you have to do is to make sure that attacking you would be too expensive.

You also have to be ready to adapt. Archz was in a perfect position to flatten my capital last night when I was beating on Grishnag and Hugman in the west, it was virtually undefended, but you failed to seize the opportunity!

I still have a few game terms I need to catch up on, I don't really know the civic stuff and espionage is something I don't understand yet. Maybe Tyler can point us to a good resource on the game?

Anyway, thanks for a fun game last night.

I'd like to point out a few problems in our games.

a) play single player you fucks, I'm not good at civ and I don't really understand what's happening all the time, but things like automating exploration and workers really do speed the game up.

b) 120 turns is way too short for the game to actually get interesting

c) inland sea... there is a huge problem in distances with this map, to attack my next neighbor (Grishnag) at the start of the game, I had to send my warriors and archers 12 turns away, that's 10% of the game. Even if I wanted to thwart Tyler, I simply could never touch him due to distances.

d) this is directly related to the distance problem, with the game mode on quick, the risk of armies being outdated once they actually reach their location is huge.

Suggestions:

Set speed to normal, to slow down tech rushes and increase the efficient lifetime of a unit.

Play longer games, we need to pre-agree on the time we'll play and stick to it. I think a full game should be fine when we actually get one going.

Could we try a Pangea map instead of inland sea? It's technically quite similar but it eliminates the biggest distance problems (Pangea is a giant continent for everyone map for those who don't know).

Regarding the backstabbing, ganging up problem... all you have to do is make sure it's not feasible to attack you! It's your own problem if people are ganging up on you.

I really enjoyed the game last night. It is good to know we can do a 120 turn game in 3 or 4 hours. I do think that using the CTON rules would be best of these sorts of games though. People don't really want to play after they ahve lost two cites anyway...

A 400 turn, normal speed "ironman" game would be fun to do though. We can maybe set that one up and play that when everyone is online. If not play a shorter one.

Lets try pangea then, it will be even more aggressive and increase the chance of people ganging up, but as you say it will allow everone the chance to react to a run-away leader.

Here is a decent FAQ for you newbies http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/faq. One of the key things that people need to learn is that it takes aprox a 2:1 advantage for an attacker to take a city. So if you defend with 2 units an attacker will probably need to send at least 4. This is modified by technology of course, "you dont want to bring a sword to a gunfight".

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No."
Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but the next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61"
