Title: Dead Island
Post by: Kerenza on September 04, 2011, 03:44:26 pm
So... anybody else got this on preorder? I was sold on the trailer alone.. Out 9th Sept, 4 player co-op. Sure, zombie killer, but killing zombies never gets old. :D

Gameplay seems so slooooooooooooooow. I love zombie theme and everything, but SO SLOOOOOOOOOOW.

Hmm, also game cost here less then 20 euro, which is quite strange considering it dosnt seems so bad or budged production, may actually get it if more ppl plan to buy that for co-op (if it will be any decent).

Looks pretty good, but also feels like they had some fairly conflicting intentions, between an immersive zombie sim and the damage/rpg shit etc, as an example.

Decided against getting this after reading some reviews.

Escort quests are shit in general.
Engine is apprantley really terrible and can't process more then 10 zombies at once
And if you pick the firearms trained cop (Ingame name says "Firearms expert) You must wait till level 10 to use a pistol.

What the fuck.

Noooo don't tell me that! :(
Everything I've read so far sounded so promising.. only complaints I read were that the storyline was a bit shallow (eg, http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-dead-island/720225 .. ) Am still gonna give it a try at least, although thanks for the heads up on the firearms cop :D  http://deadisland.deepsilver.com/characters.php

Guess I'm bound to have my expectations crushed after such a beautiful original trailer - certainly hyped it up. Will letcha know once it arrives!

I read that eurogamer.net review, too, Snugglez. They reviewed the Xbox version, so I still have a little hope left for the PC version. The ingame vids they posted months ago looked so good :/ Damn.

Torrent it.  If you like it, buy it.

How shit works in the future.

I've played the first three missions (~1h) yesterday, and it was good fun. Controls are slightly wonky, but nothing serious and you get used to it. So far it's hell of a fun to whack zombies into pieces with rudders, sharp sticks and kitchen knives.

The setting (zombie paradise island) is very well designed. I also didn't notice any shitty animations like in those youtube vids, prob only happens in 3rd person, because if you look down at your feet in 1st person, those behave crazy, too. So, don't look at yourself!

To be seen whether whacking zombies will still be entertaining after X hours and whether they put in enough mission variety. The constant weapon breaking might get annoying, dunno.

Game is fun, but the technical issues are irritating at least. I had to disable voice stuff in Steam (couse for some reason there is no way to disable voice chat in game, and it's quality is bad and i was using skype anyway)  and play thru hamachi lan couse of constant discconects (servers got overloaded i guess). Saw one quest a bit bugged (graphic bug, not gameplay), and once had some problem with sound (restart fixed it). Shame such a fun game is plagued with so many annoying issues.

Also gameplay is basicly like hmm, Borderlands, just you melee mostly and kill zombies instead of aliens. Graphic is good but not amazing, story is hmm, well, it's about zombies so dont expect amazing story.

Been playing it for, dunno, 15-20h maybe, and still enjoying it. That game is hot shit. Thou you're basically just smashing zombies in the face all the time, but I really like the setting/design of the zones, the quests (fetch X then go Y then come back, but nicely packed into the story), the constant leveling, the high production values. Looks great on my system and runs smooth. Also has good pacing, for example at the end of the city/start of jungle guns become a bigger part of the game.

Also still not a single technical glitch, other than one cutscene missing the sky texture. Wondering if all the internethaters play the same game...?

"Not a single technical glitch" - A lot of the people I know that have been playing it are randomly having their save games deleted/corrupted and have to restart.  Not so fun after the 2nd time...

I had that once, when I installed the patch. Luckily all is fine since. I'm only playing solo only, maybe it's a coop thing.

Sounds unfortunate.. :< Not been effected by that, but then have been playing all the way through since the start doing co-op (as Purna, SamB and Xian). Finally at chapter 8 after much messing around, taking our time and thoroughly exploring everything.. not sure how many chapters there are, but hoping for plenty more. Heard the top level is 50, and we're 30ish something right now. Agree with Narw on the voice front, it's fucking retarded that you can't disable it.. so you're just basically stuck with steam and all it's crappy glory.. but it's bearable. Also had the same crazy sky glitch in one cut scene, but bar some of the usual buggy clipping, has been a-ok.

Gotta say, am still loving it. We're playing around three hours each evening, often delayed by how creatively we can kill each other. Sure, it has it's fair share of bugs.. have had a couple of times where I've heard a screaming zombie come running at me, then literally just vanish off the screen mid-sprint .. only to appear on my screen out of nowhere, grab my character and try and chew her face off. That said, this is actually sort've fun, since it makes me jump out my skin. :D  Have had more issues with Steam than the game, since it has been disconnecting us randomly, but then again, hey, it's Steam, I know what to expect.

May have to try it solo once we've cleared it as I imagine that would be a touch trickier, but co-op is damn fun. Thumbs up from me, anywho.
