Title: Android Phone
Post by: Daekesh on June 12, 2011, 05:13:42 pm
Moo!  I'm looking for a cheap android phone.  Something with a large-ish touchscreen, but no features to actually make it expensive.  Don't care about wifi, 3g, etc.  Just something with the ability to make calls and android OS.

Arch has put forward the sony ericson x10, but says it has a small screen.  I was looking at the htc wildfire.  Any other suggestions?

My phone company recently had an offer on the original htc desire that was cheaper than all the other ones available. So I went for that.

Yeah... not so much here.  Desires are 400-500 euros!

I'm using the Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro, it's not got that big a screen but it's a smartphone that uses the slightly out dated version of Android, has a good quality qwerty keyboard and only cost me ?50 for the handset with a 24 month contract at ?15/month (100 minutes, unlimited free texts), highly recommended if you're just looking for a cheap Android

Sony Ericsson X10 have a 4" screen. The X10 mini have a small screen, 2.55". Both they are quite old so the price tag should not be to high. Anyway I would not recommended you to buy the X10 because it is very slow.. (Andriod 2.0.) Maybe if you can upgrade to the leatest Android.. but it was slow. The mini and the big version had same OS that I tried out but the mini was way faster, probably because of the big screen. The mini is obviously not an option if you want a big screen.

A new HTC Desire cost ~300 euro in Sweden (dropped about 50% since the release). And if that's to much for you, E-bay might be an option?

Maybe, yeah.  300 is still a bit high, though :P  I was thinking in the 150 euro range!  Can get a wildfire payg phone for £130 (180-200 euros?)

I'll sell you my Nokia 3310 for 150 euro!

The only Android phone I can think of that cost ~150 euro is HTC Wildfire. In Sweden it cost just under 200 euros. The screen is quite big, 3.2". The CPU ain't the best, but at least it is upgraded to Android 2.2. And I would say it is actually worth the money, at least from what I've seen.

About the HTC Desire, you can get a fresh one for 150 euro if you have patient, but easy for 200. (At least in Sweden!)

Don't go for the x10, its bit meh to use a touchscreen that's that small. You get used to it but it's still not your best option. Our company standardised around the wildfire for cheap smartphones and also recommend that phone to our customers that has similar needs as you do

If i dont remeber totally wrong, i think ZTE Blade was called ZTE San Fransico in the Uk/USA and was sold by Orange.

Ah ha, that'll be why it came up as that on amazon then :P

And as Chippen said its pretty much the best option to go with ZTE if you are just looking for a cheap Android Phone with no need for a gamepad or a 20000million mega pixel camera etc etc :P'

Edit: Also ZTE delviers the phones with minimal modification to Android OS, compared to HTC/Samsung/SE etc, which pretty much modifies the whole experience, sometimes to the worse...

Big screen == all those other shiny features.

If you want a big screen without features, get a media player -- like the Archos tablets. But they can't make calls -- they're just Android.

If you want to make calls, and you want a big screen, you won't get anything for ~?150. Maybe a secondhand first-generation HTC thingee.

Biggest and cheapest screen on a phone would be ZTE Skate at 4.3inch for 220euro

I specifically want a handset... a tablet the same size as a handset wouldn't be very useful :P

the ebay thing seems like a very good offer if he used a protective thingie over the screen so it isnt overly scratched and the battery is in good shape. You could even replace the battery at that price and still make a good deal.

I rarely see good deals on ebay, when it comes to phones. They have well-known values, so it's rare to see something go below its market value.

In other words, check to see similar auctions that have finished recently -- as it will almost certainly end up around that price.

Yeah - I'm not going to bid on it until it's close to running out.  That's tommorow morning!

Like anything even come close to using a last-generations full CPU power, let alone the new Dual-Core ones, only thing i can see using alot of CPU would SEs Xperia Play playing games.

The Desire is a very nice phone! I know cause ive ahd one for over a year, and it has an extremely good grp of developers for Custom ROMS/Hacks on XDA, and they are still going strong eventho its not even close to a new phone.

There's quite a few desire hd's on there aswell.  For similar prices, too.

The HD is very nice and has android 2.3, the normal desire doesnt.

Imo the HD is too big for pockets though.

I have the HD and don't think its too big at all, fits in all my pockets!

quick note: not all desire HD's come with 2.3 yet, still depends on your service provider if you get it or not

Not bought a phone in quite a while - Would I need a new sim for these?  Do they use special ones?  My current one is like 1cm x 2cm.

Desire uses standard SIM, I think only Iphone and a few others use the new type.

Very true! I'd forgotten about the Salsa. I guess Salsa has the 'feeling' of hot/fast/excited. We'll know for sure when/if they release a Waltz or Foxtrot...

re: Vorte I am looking for Meizu M8 online atm, but I seem to come across a lot of pages saying Steve Jobs froze the M8 sales due to too many similarities with iPhone?

Although, the upgraded version Meizu M9 goes for a pretty neat ~325 euros on chinese wholesale sites, with free shipping :O
