Couple of years ago, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg focused on the European theatre of second World War in their epic miniseries Band of Brothers.

Now they are bringing us to the far side of the world, The Pacific.

Yes, Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg are once again working on yet another epic miniseries. This time from the pacific theatre of the war.

In this new 10 part miniseries we will be following the story of 3 marines as they go through the war.

Coming out in 2010.... and I cant wait to get my hands on it

It looks pretty decent, I mean Saving private ryan was really good, I just don't think I care enough about World war 2 anymore to go and watch it.

It's been done so much now that It really just doesn't intrest me anymore.

I'm sure this'll be awesome.

And no Swedish main guy to ruin it all...

I just saw the first episode, and while I didn't fully expect a Band of Brothers 2, it is in fact a similar project made by the same people. However, this was a complete and total letdown.

No character development, no story build-up, no emotions, just 5 minutes of explaining that the series is set in the 1940s and bam, japanese soldiers running into a machine gun, throw in some war clichés, roll credits. Where are the characters? Where's the fear of the hiding enemy? Where's the tension? Where is the WAR?!

So far I'm extremely disappointed.

Hm... I'm up to date with this one. I think it's pretty good. There's definitely character development later on -- quite a lot of non-combat stuff!

I never did see BoB though (I have downloaded it, will watch after The Pacific).

Some of the later scenes are fantastic, if you like warfare. And when they get to Australia it's a very different show :)

i heard that this one lacks in knowledge of history. Not in total, but some footnotes were missleading.
Anyway, i'll give a watch soon.

I don't know about the historical accuracy, I'm more watching this as "entertainment". If you can call watching people get shot to pieces that.

Anyway, biggest problem with the show seems to be that it's basically Band of Brothers, but not as good. Same stuff different location.

Devlin is right that it's kinda "two sentence introduction - ready, set, go!". I'd appreciate if there was more continuity, something they apparently tried in the 3rd episode. Afterwards it's "marines get thrown into set pieces" again.

The show just got really good with the 6th episode. Didn't have the BoB feeling of "damn it must suck to be there" until now..(with a few exceptions of non-combat stuff)

You have to wait 6 episodes (of the 7 available?) for it to get good?

Nah, it's good from ep01, but if you've seen BoB you probably have some expectations to how characters bond with each other, and the feeling how shitty the situations really are.
I don't want to spoil anything, but keep in mind that it gets better and better.

I'm currently watching ep02, and there's this one scene that immediately got my mind to this one:

I don't know if it's a good or bad reference :D

same goes for band of brothers though not everything was historicly accurate in that one

Yeesh, this week's episode is heavy!

The Japs, using Okinawans as meat shields... exploding mother... ugh.
