Title: Max Payne
Post by: Ahkailon on October 09, 2008, 01:32:12 am
I guess there are more people than me that remember the Max Payne games. I simply loved these games and due to THIS (http://www.maxpaynethemovie.com/) I have downloaded the second game again (played through the first one not long ago). They have made a movie of the games (  :o :D ) and it is due for the theaters in a few weeks! I am really looking forward to this! However, there are a few things in the trailer, and the casting, that concerns me:

The flying demon/angel/gargoyle things (guess they are valkyries). If those are not effects of the drug thing that is so prominent in the first game (valkyre or something like that), but actual flying things, then that might break the entire film. Also; will they be able to sustain that delicious noir feel the games provided?
As far as the casting goes: Max Vahlberg is playing Max Payne (He might pull it of, but I'm not that sure). Mila Kunis has been casted as Mona Sax (again, not what I would expect but might very well work). And Ludacris is playing Jim Bravura (the white, fat, old, balded cop). That will be interesting to see.

Though I am looking much forward to the film, and would love it if they managed to do it properly, I have my fears that it at best will be as entertaining as that Hitman film they made, but not very true to the game.

Edit: Graphic novel sort of (http://www.maxpaynethemovie.com/graphicnovel/index.html)

I played Max Payne ONCE... and it was the first one.

No, after talking on Vent, I actually played Serious Sam... Which was awesome!

If it's going to be remotely like the games, that movie will without a doubt win the William Shatner Overacting Award.

All the over-the-top ludicrous cutscenes/voiceovers ruined the game:

"The nightmare was always the same. Violent shapes moving in darkness, old and ugly. The killer's mad laughter was a riddle filled with wicked innuendo. Somewhere the baby was crying."

"Punchinello's restaurant had seen better days. Snow was falling like ashes from post-apocalyptic skies, but that was outside. Things would soon get hot in the Don's restaurant. "

"The night groaned with cold, the garden lights flickering nervously. In their light the falling snow was dead white before the darkness ate it up."

The 'good ones' are in the 2nd half.

You prefer it when the voice acting is more... Arnie?

"I was cold. She was hot. The combination was obvious. Bang, Bang, baby!!"

Have you actually played it?

I haven't, but I heard it was good!

Some people like over-acted dialogue...

Some people LIKE William Shatner :P

I loved that game, tempted to get it out of the attic to reinstall now that I have a computer that can hold more than one game at a time. Thought it was an ok game until I hit the bullet-time button by accident and I was hooked. Can't beat blowing a junkie away in slow-motion with a sawn-off.

I always assumed the over the top acting was a stylistic choice rather than just bad acting, but maybe I'm being too generous.

The film trailer looks interesting, but I'm hoping the Valkrie aren't too prominent. I'm not sure I would like it if they went too supernatural with Max Payne, I'd prefer a more gritty film.

You are probably very right regarding the overacting Rilg. It is more a stylistic thing. I find the overacting and cliches to be sort of the charm of the game (along with bullet time and slow-motion-jumping-across-the-room-blasting-stuff-with-dual-Ingrams). Then again I find the whole noir thing very appealing, just like for instance SinCity.

The valkyries are just "symbolistic" they dont really do anything, like when he kicks the guy out of the window and you see a valkyrie pull him out instead.

very predictable.

being predicable is fine as long as you arent boring. max payne is almost boring. it sure isnt very entertaining.

marky mark is pretty cool as usual though. and a dark, post 9/11 new york is looking pretty good. thats about it.

4/10

i played the game briefly was very boring, i think the only reason it did well was the bullet time effect and stripping that out make it a game of little merit. However, i'm looking forward to watching the film as its got Mark W in and hes has the cutest butt

This was a fail movie.
I liked the game it was a very cool setting/mood. The bullet time stuff was awesome (for a while).

So we were expecting massive action like the game, running around in alleys and dark buildings shooting the hell out of people.

No instead we got a boring crime story where the plot+plot-development was as shitty as in a computergame :P

2/10 Waste of time...

Wrighting this as I'm writing this post.

The story is, lame. The acting is worse. It's nice that they use "famous people" for the movie. But they're being wasted on this movie.

What annoys me the most, is the snow. The snow is so fake! It flies around in the air, like they're flies or something. And the moment Max and the girl enter a house after thye've been in the snow, there isn't any clue that it's been snowing outside.

The other thing is the blood. Someone gets killed, but you hardly see any blood or wounds on the body, just blood on the floor.

3/10, 3 for the fact that I like norsk mythologie.

EDIT: Since when does a gun magazine have about 35/40 bullets in them? (Yes, I actualy rewinded and counted the times he shot without him reloading)

I just finished watching 'Dead Set', some Big Brother/Zombie Apocalypse mash-up. Very good, if you like brutal violence, and zombies :P

Streamed half Max Payne and went and puked. I could have made it better! You've got half of the storyboards allready drawn up in the games! How do you manage to fuck it up so horribly?!

And if you like zombies, they recently released a new Norwegian movie called "Død snø" (Dead Snow) which is (I presume as I haven't seen it yet, only heard of it) a slightly gory comedy about zombies. Nazi-zombies!

Edit: However, it is still a Norwegian film and as such I feel obliged to warn you all that film making is not the strongest industry in Norway (on account of the people here spitting out shitloads of sucky movies)
