No need to say anything just look at the vids in ign or some place and jizz in your pants.
I am a lazy cockbag.
-
Wow, very informative post.
What vids are you talking about, the utter shit one they released in December that showed 80% developer hype talking, 15% artwork graphics and 5% actual ingame footage with abysmal animations that looked like something from Xbox1 times?
Well the new one from Tuesday is already a huge improvement, but still around 0% informative value when they show some alpha graphics studies.
Also: "For whatever reason, when people took the RPG and went to make the massively multiplayer RPG, they left out the fourth pillar - story," Yeah right, cause WoW has no story and lore at all :D
Well, Bioware = awesome, Star Wars license = awesome, so hopefully that'll become an awesome game. So far all they showed thou was hype, which reminds me a lot of what the Warhammer guys did (which is also an awesome license, and see how well that worked out...)
-
As Goza says...
Bioware + Star Wars license should mean something good. But it could just as easily be another SWG, or just another MMO to be crushed by the WoW juggernaut.
Even WAR, which was widely considered a good MMO with some pretty good implementation and a little good innovation, has been utterly trampled by the release of Lich King and, less specifically, WoW's incumbency.
Bioware would have to pull off something pretty spectacular to avoid failure here, and something phenomenal if Blizz were to start talking up their "next-gen" MMO when SW:TOR is nearing completion.
Guess we have to wait and see.
-
Well bioware has potential to become the new blizzard. I don't think wow will crash it like it crashed WAR. Fantasy games tend to look alike and people don't want to play an incomplete fantasy game with no end content and such when there is a giant polished hit like wow. Starwars universe is not really like the fantasy one. (I heard warcraft was "inspired" by warhammer universe). prefer sci-fci mmos to fantasy ones and there isn't one around except eve which has a class of its own. For the record swg was pretty fun. Sony fucked it up by leveling system.
Yes vids are not really informative but graphics are very nice. Animations are meh but they didn't seem repetitive. By Story they mean choices that effects gameplay. I don't know how they are gonna make it prolly like phasing or one person instances but that would kinda hurt the mmo feeling.
-
Yes, there is definitely a gap for a sci-fi MMO, and that will probably be taken by this game.
But I don't think people play an MMO because of its genre -- the genre is just an interesting side-effect.
I don't play WoW because it's a fantasy setting (and I bet you the 12 million players have played games like Star Craft, or Counter Strike, or ... ), I play it because it's a damn good game -- and because I have too much invested to stop.
The other question is if there is simply any more MMO players out there...
-
i do wonder why its allways fantasy or sci-fi why not something in the 1990's or something set in a alternate universe or something
-

A 90's MMO? :-\
-
well you know with some wierd alternate dimension shit like the ability to fly through poop or posessing people...
hell make a vampire the masquerade MMO that might be fun playing a insane malkavian
-
Hehe.
Wasn't City of Heroes modern-day'ish? And The Matrix, I guess.
And the reason very few games are 'modern day' is because people play online games for escapism -- to become someone else, just for a little while. It's incredibly pleasant for some people, and people find it relaxing too.
A Vampire MMO would be very good!
-
A Vampire MMO would be very good!
It would suck.
HO HO!
-
Heh.
-
1930s mmo. With... er... monsters. And other cool stuff.
Seriously though, I'd love a steampunk mmo.
-
I agree that there's somewhat of a space for a sci-fi MMO, although EVE-Online is a pretty good contender if you just look at the genre. I really like it, but a lot don't as it really is mainly a click-through-menus-while-you-wait-six-months-for-your-skills-to-train-in-real-time-kindda-game.
That said, I'm also pretty sure that while it might be a good game, it won't by any means have a chance against WoW, in the sense that it will steal tons and tons of players form it. I seriously doubt anything will within the next five-ten years.
As for WoW being inspired by Warhammer: Warhammer is inspired from what? Dungeons and Dragons? Which is inspired by Tolkien perhaps? Which is again inspired by? A mixture of old european folklore? It's not where you get your inspiration, it's what you do with your inspiration that matters. ;)
-
give 40k MMO
-
-
I find your lack of ingame footage disturbing.
Nice trailer thou.
-
i believe i said the same thing on steam to douche
-
Yas, need more ingame, still really nice though.
Edit: http://kotaku.com/5277689/star-wars-the-old-republic-preview-bam-here-it-is
Sounds like it is going to be pretty awesome!
Also a left 4 dead 2 article on there with some Screenshots.
-
i want World of GTA
-
this is sick!
-
There is actually ingame footage but they don't let non-press people watch. It doesn't really make a lot of sense. I guess they want to keep hype alive but still I think it is a bad decision.
-
The saying 'You only get to make a first impression once' I think is what they are applying here.
And, given the monumental challenge of going up against WoW (different genre but whatever; there is definitely a bunch of the same target audience there to fight over), I can hardly blame them for wanting, for lack of a better phrase, to 'min-max' their revealing of their game and entrance to the mmo market.
If Bioware gets this right, they will have more or less earned a ticket from EA to develop much more freely, and be funded for it. The incentives for them to get this perfect are really huge.
-
This is probably the game that will lead on from WoW -- that, or WoW2. I imagine it's going to be one hell of a face-off too.
I wonder which one will release first...
-
there is only one winner, see all other mmo's, fails 1 by 1.
WoW ^^ if there is anything that comes over wow, it has to be wow2 =)
-

I am fairly certain bioware will release first, I think q2-q3 2010 wouldn't be too far-fetched. Some of the pre-order stores date it this year... which is obviously too early.
But yeah, this game is something that actually might stand a chance against wow, warhammer/aoc or any other wow "killer" so far has been pretty much a clone with some new things thrown in. Moving from fantasy to sci-fi and using a very well known lore to build the game around is a clever move.
I hope they do it right...
-
Well Star Wars: Galaxies was done fairly well, and got quite a large subscriber count, but that was pre-WoW! People still don't know how WoW got quite so many players...
But we'll see. If they can time it right, it could work. But Blizzard won't let them time it right, you can be sure of that... :)
-
I think this game can actually beat WoW.
But that's just my view, I mean I never really thought AOC would beat WoW, or Warhammer online, But I don't know, times'a changin and I think maybe It's about time to pass the torch.
If we looked at the MMO Community like a big monopoly board, You'd see WoW most likley having hotels on every property after Bond street (That's the orange one, right?)
-
Bond street is the high price one in the green set. The high price orange one is Vine street. I forget the name of the other two in that set.
-
Not a single ingame footage and people scream "wow killer".
Amazing :P
Would love to level a Sith though!

its been shown behind closed doors tho, and those that have seen it atleast says the footage shown have been amazing
-
My foot is also an octopus. I haven't shown it to anyone yet, because I'm waiting for the right time, but I can assure you, it is.
-
I agree with Kesh, there is all sorts of amazing footage out there. My left foot, for instance, looks like Hulk Hogan.
-
Makes you wonder what the third camera-shy person -- Grish -- looks like...
I don't think you understand what it would take for WoW to lose its throne, Douche. MMOs aren't just for Christmas, they're for life! Until they close it down (which they won't, unless it's part of the WoW2 release thing, but I doubt that, considering its worldwide player base) WoW will always have MILLIONS of players.
The only option is that SW:TOR increases the number of MMO players, like WoW has done. It'll take some disaffected WoW players I am sure, but it won't take 13 million of them.
Let's wait and see. I'm sure it'll be awesome :)

Frak! That's awesome :)
Pretty long for a trailer too!
-
The trailer is great.. The game itself worth to spend some time till finish.. Bioware doing so great job this year.
-
It'll be their first MMO... if they magically get it right, I will be amazed :)
-
the trailer really makes me want to play, but the ingame videos have seen so lame imo.

-
fukkn Rucious
-
Cranky Goza is here to destroy your enthusiasm by asking whether we will ever see some interesting ingame gameplay videos.
-
Let's hope so.
-
I hope for some too, 20 minutes of boring ingame videos wasnt promising last time
-
lmao Rucious :-[
Not expected until around Spring 2011 people are guessing.
-
Shhhhhhhh.
-
i have 2 problems this movie (nothing to do with watching it mind you)
1 is that its a cgi movie and that makes me not so impressed by it if they dont want to show you gameplay footage
and 2 is that if the republic had those kind of soldiers im amazed that the sith didnt conquer the freaking galaxy by that time.
giving up the high ground to go in fucking melee against melee specialists seems rather suicidal to me more then good tactics

-
Most good!
-
So who has pre-ordered (http://www.swtor.com/preorder) this?
Digital and Deluxe seem way too expensive. Think I will order at Game.co.uk
-
So we can pre-order now? It's cinematic videos blow my head but..
I consider myself as a huge Star Wars fan but every single SW game failed horribly so far ( I loved space battles on Empire at War though.). I know EA invested huge amount of money ( $200k correct me if i'm wrong ) on this one, everyone is taking a bright view of it BUT i just can't combine Star Wars with a MMO. Well if i only look at another MMOs based on other trilogies like the Matrix and LOTR, it would be fair to say they failed too, and i can't see a reason for this one is going to succeed. And to be fair making a MMO is not easy. We witnessed a lot of MMOs fall in a month or so which called "WoW Destroyer" by their developers, players and fans and I might cry if this one takes the path the others took.
Well if i can look at this in a CEO's or invester's eyes, there's 100% guaranty that a MMO will make more profit than a single-player game. It's sales, monthly subscribes etc. but this can also damage it's name & prestige. I can't say which one is more important in their eyes.
I'm going to whine like everybody else here; make it single-player with an awesome story! Make KoToR 3 goddamn it! ( also Valve start making that fkkn Half-Life !! )
-
one mmo i wont be buying
-
I'm actually currently not that convinced by the footage I've seen so far, after a long while back being very hyped about it, before we had any details. I guess we'll see.
-
Strifium likes KOTOR 1 or/and 2 enough to want 3rd, but thinks every SW game has failed so far?
--
I'll wait for free trial to try the mmo
--
I believe SW Galaxy was quite succesfull SW-MMO...
-
Who said that i like KoToR? I can't deny that i enjoyed playing but it wasn't quite catchy. Dialogs and it's environment was epic but lets face it, gameplay and combats wasn't that good. And I wouldn't mind if they decided to make KoToR 3 instead of The Old Republic. No doubt that one would be more successful and contain more epicness & content. That even goes for Warcraft (except Blizzard's wealth now.).
In the other hand I just remembered the Force Unleashed's existence.. My argument about "all SW games sucks" collapsed.
-
Just gonna throw this out there
-i enjoyed playing
-Dialogs and it's environment was epic

You little... !! You.. !! :(
I surrendered to your absolute supervision. :'(

Spam flurry not good enough for you? :P

I think you're missing some zeros there.

Surely they won't release with it being so excessively taxing/unoptimised/whatever. I'd be very surprised if they do. Could also be some insane bugchecking or reporting shit or ... well, whatever. Such a small number of characters + that hardware -> it would surely just explode lower end kit (and the game doesn't look that pretty soo...)
-
talked to kelrathos' brother yesterday who is currently level 28 in the swmmo beta. he was a huge kotor fan and he simply loves the 'singleplayer' leveling experience. But he has had one chance to do an instance so far which was underwhelming. pvp is totally useless with characters autoturning to cast spells and such. He is playing a healer and combined with the npc companion he hasn't found quests that he couldn't solo.
there is no apparent lategame content currently so he was really hoping for a delayed release so they could improve pvp and add endlevel pve. if they don't he saw the game as kotor 3 with a few mmo elements.

I actually just stumbled across this particular comic which pretty much illustrates well my reaction to what I've seen thus far
