Title: El Orfanato (The Orphanage)
Post by: kagir on February 13, 2008, 06:09:39 pm
http://imdb.com/title/tt0464141/

Plot Outline:
A woman brings her family back to her childhood home, where she opens an orphanage for handicapped children. Before long, her son starts to communicate with an invisible new friend.

This is a really good horror movie by the director of Pan's Labyrinth (Juan Antonio Bayona). A kind of horror movie I wish more directors made. Without spoiling the movie I can say that there is alot of tension in the movie, yet the director scares the living shit out of you with the simplest things, that isn't weird at all if you pull it out of context.

The acting is terrific. Both from the grown ups, and the children. What's also worth mentioning is the filming/angling. The feeling the director creates with old school methods like amazing camera positions etc blows you away.

The story is superb and complete. It's pretty much about, if the truth doesn't surface when something terrible has happened, it isn't over until it surfaces. You leave the cinema satisified with *almost* every answer and a pretty ok ending.

8(maybe 9)/ 10.

Go see it! :)

I'm not a huge fan of horror, as I don't really like to be scared... But I do like good tension, and one or two horror films a year can't be bad... I'll give it a look when I get home, if I can find a DVD rip!

People should start leaving mininova links on their reviews...

Watching a movie in a language you don't understand a single word of is kinda sucky. The US trailer is in English, but I rewatched it and actually all the actors say are names... Clever disguise for a subtitled movie!

It's been in German cinemas (nothing runs here with subtitles), so I assumed there was an English version around, too.
