Did anyone play these old PlayStation games? :)
« on: September 10, 2008, 01:14:47 am »
So, after playing CTR (Crash Team Racing) for quite a while in the livingroom, I started looking for emulators for games I used to play when I was more of a child than I currently am.

PaRappa the Rapper is the first game that comes to mind. It's a quite hard game to complete allthough it looks very simple. It also has a story line and really entertaining and funky beats. Noone rap's like this dawg(dog). Review and youtube video of one of the stages;

(Note; that guy is not very good:p )

The 2nd amazing game I would really like to get my hands on, is Muppet Race Mania! It's more than less the same as CTR, but with the loved Muppets and amazing weapons.. Like the Homing Chiken and Fish Missiles. God, this is just the best game ever, did anyone else play it?  :-*

Anyone got some old PS games they played I should try get on an emulator? :)

I'm absolutely pro at PaRappa. There's also a second part.

Check out Ulala in Space Channel 5.

Vagrant Story, still relevant as a good RPG and uniquely styled game today. Worth getting a hold of a copy if you can, or finding an iso and playing it on an emulator.

PS1 had an awful lot of games that were excellent but somehow missed by many, which is sad.

I think that's simply because the PS1 had such a VAST library of games, Kawe.

Really, it was... insane. That's what won the war against the N64/Sega/etc apparently -- the way Sony let anyone develop games for the PS1. There was no QC, no signing... just reckless developing. And as a result, thousands and thousands of games :)

So true! Although I think overall it was a good thing. And in the case of Vagrant Story, it's not like square we under because of it or anything.

Also, a few other games I recall from PS1 that I liked.

Kurushi (also known as IQ) - Great puzzle title. Sadly hasn't been cloned in any form.

Tombi - Platforming fun. Many pigs involved.

Rival Schools - 3d fighting game with cool tag team attacks and a bajillion mini games.

Soul Blade (precursor to Soul Calibur series) - Check out the intro CGI of Soul Blade here. Somewhat cheesy but roughly 3,000 times superior to all the Soul Calibur intros, including 4. Pure nostalgia.

The Darkstalkers series - Under appreciated fighting games. Some fairly iconic characters and outlandish attacks. I don't think any other fighting game has a mummy that even uses his sarcophagus in attacks. Also, Morrigan.

Guilty Gear X - The fact that this lead to the fantastic Guilty Gear X2 game is great. Even more impressive is how well the previous versions played on ps1.

Street Fighter Alpha series - You may have guessed fighting games hold a soft spot in my heart ever since SF2). SFA3 was great fun. SFA2 also had a bit of an 'oops' moment on the title screen. In japan the series is known as the street fighter zero series, and he voiceover on the title screen who announces the game title wasn't entirely dubbed over properly, leaving him to announce it as "Street Fighter ZeAlpha 2!" on the english version.

Jade Cocoon - (actually pretty badly executed story wise, but mashing monsters together was certainly fun). If you've watched a Studio Ghibli film you'll recognise the art style.

Tenchu & Tenchu 2 - Tenchu 2 had a level designer that I wasted a long time on. Especially cool for the time was that light sources such as torches not only worked visually but also affected gameplay (stealth title after all). The main drawback to Tenchu 2 compared to the original was that the heavier stylisation of 1 was all but thrown away for 2. Makes me a little sad to think that all the following Tenchu titles have been so mediocre.

Overboard! - Well, the wiki page is nigh on devoid of info. Fun game though, sailing around top down view, shooting your cannons (or flamethrowers etc., the game had a few cool weapon powerups), a few puzzles here and there too. Surprisingly entertaining!

Kula World - Another unique little puzzle game. A bit like portal in that once our brain starts thinking with the mechanics of the puzzles in mind, it gets more fun. Can be quite challenging indeed! This game is actually now available again through the PSN Store, and you can then also put it on a PSP if you wish, which is great considering it's quite an ideal game for short journies.

Grandia - This title really took me by surprise, being that I had actually bought it on a whim and didn't expect the RPG of epic proportions it turned out to be. Impressive music too, lots of fitting tunes. Important dialogue is voiceover-ed, and mercifully it's not bad. Not to say it's all good either, but by and large it's above average quality. Well worth finding and playing through.

Hummmm..... definitely many, many others too. Will need to give it a think though.

There are also a bunch that I didn't even play, but liked (watched a friend play, or just absorbed an awful lot of info about) that I will share as soon as they come to mind. Once I'm back in my flat with a little more spare time, I might try and dig out some ROMS/ISO files for some of these and link them here. Wonder how hard they are to find now, or not?

On a side note, if you're looking for a PS1 emulator, last time I checked ePSXe was the one of choice. The last time I checked was also quite a while ago.

You mentioning Jade Cacoon reminded me of two of my absolute favourites:

Azure Dreams and Grandia

Grandia was utterly epic. If you haven't played the game before and like RPGs, totally get the ROM for it. Though you do have to cope with one of the characters having a pretty annoying voice.

I think forgetting about Grandia earns me a position on a firing line. I am ashamed! Must add it to the list.

Spent a stupid number of hours playing that game to death. Really, epic is the word. Although it wasn't without flaw by any measure, it was a massive adventure. I was frustrated when I discovered Grandia 2 had nothing to do with Grandia story/character wise.

Hehehe.

That was my first foray into the PS1 too, actually.

I bought a second-hand PS1, quite some time after its release. Someone, or something had told me to play FF7...

And so I did!

I was very keen on the Crash Bandicoot series too, but I didn't play many other PS games to be honest. I was busy playing Goldeneye and Mario Kart 64 :) (and furiously playing PC games.)

Me and my neighbour spendt hours playing Crash Bandicoot :P Gotta love that Crash guy.. way better than those Rayman games that look like him.

Me and my cousin played Goldeneye and Mario games everytime I visited him, god, we skipped watching porn in the livingroom after 00.00 just so we could play Nintendo!

oh yeah a while ago i was looking on Ebay and got i couple of PS1 games i loved:

Legacy of Kain: Blood Omen. The first one, decent RPG, very orignal at the time.

Future Cop LAPD: This is a rather obscure game i came across with a demo cd of a PS mag. The 1player/2player co-op story mood was decent, but where it really shines was the 2playerVS modes.....insanely fun.....myself and my brother must have played about 40 hours of just the free 5 min demo we got. Bought it recently and still play it now. HIGHLY RECOMENDED!

Any bomberman game ever......excepting ones that try 3d, or story modes, or on Nintendo consoles.

Grand turismo 2/3: Never was really in to racing games......but these were just special.

Any of the "vs" series Camcom/Marvel/Nightstalkers/Streetfighter arcade conversions for the PS1.

Mashed on PS1/PS2. The true inheritor of the Micro Machines Legacy, also Twisted Metal.

Not a PS1 title... but Killer Instict.....Fuck Mortal Combat, Mortal Combat was shite....need more games like Killer Instict.....hggggh sooooo gooood......and the Combo Practice modes were excellent. The Characters were amazing, Combos/counters wicked and flowed superbly, and you could be one who looked like the T-1000.

Hehehe Overboard....yeah that was wicked......

Since you have dragged me tapdancing down memory lane, i have decided to highjack this post and list fav games on lots of different consoles.

Game Cube: the Metroid Prime series, the only reason i bought a cube, Mario Party! .

N64: Golden Eye, Mario Cart, Mario World, Perfect Dark (the only FPS game i have seen that has a multiplayer option for one player to be the hero, and the other player every other guard/goon in the level, via bodyswitching like the agents in the Matrix).

SNES: Mario Cart, Super Mario/Mario 1/2/3 combo, Super Metroid Prime (Epic Bosses!), The Zelda game.

NES: Duck Hunt, Chippen'dale Rescue Rangers (Dell mentioned this a while ago, 2 player co-op, massive fun!) Mega man games.

Game Boy: Darkwing duck (lolololololo....oldschool...), Zelda game, many more i can't remember.

Mega Drive: All Sonic games, Golden Axe series, Echo the Dolphin, Kid Chameleon (very original and fun) there was a game where you were a zombie/ghoul and you throw your head at things (not medevil), the slaughter house game was hideiously graphic, the bomberman game with the kangaroos (the reason to buy a multi tap), many many more.

never had a master system.

PS1: remembered a few more: metal gear solid, Dark Omen/shadow of horned rat (excellent port of the PC game), Resident Evil 2,(epic, epic freakyness).

Thats enough for now..... need to go take my retro medication.

Wow, you big franchise junky :P

That list could be boiled down to 'Sonic, Mario and Metroid'

Which wouldn't be a bad list anyway...

But then again I bought my N64 purely for Goldeneye (I had like 3 games in total...)

And I bought my Wii purely for Zelda and Mario Galaxy.

Shockingly, I've never owned a SNES, Sega or Gameboy. I know...

I was banging away on my PC... programming, and playing games like Commander Keen, Rick Dangerous, the early adventure games... and THEN... Baldur's Gate.

The rest they say... is history.
