Title: Scandinavian cinema
Post by: Sertth on August 05, 2010, 02:21:42 am
I'd like to watch some scandinavian movies and greatly appreciate some advice. Can be any genre and any time period. Though i dont like to watch very old movies unless they are somewhat fucking great :). No lars von trier and Ingmar bergman ones...
Also can be mini tv series too.

After i had watched Let The Right One In i wanted to kill myself... Cause i thought it was so bad, i dont rly know what foreign film critics like about it...

I could recommend the movies called Pusher from denmark starring Mads Mikkelsen.

Pusher: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0117407/

Pusher 2: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0396184/

I guess "Festen" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0154420/) is one of the best movies from denmark in recent times.

"Blinkende" lygter is one of the funniest, but im not sure how well it translates to other languages(http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0236027/

I strongly recomend these movies

Evil: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338309/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0338309/)

The Seventh Seal: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050976/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0050976/)

Last one is old but its a classic that atleast every swede should watch once in life.

Everyone can't have good taste - it's ok!

I recommend you see "Lilja 4-ever" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0300140/).
A very good movie about how a Eastern-European 16-year-old girl comes to Sweden for a better life. What she arrives to is the fucked up sex-underworld.. This one caught a lot of attention when it was released, and put a lot of focus on the trafficing and prostitution that occurs in Sweden.

As for mini-series, I recommend you see "Riget" (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0108906/).
This show had a cult stamp while it was still being aired.. Very creepy show recorded at Denmarks largest hospital with some of Scandinavias best actors, at the time. Unfortunately for you, it's directed by Lars Von Trier :) Even if you don't like his more recent work, you shouldn't miss out on this one!

Probably Norway's most well known movie, atleast it's a regular during christmas for most nortards. Never seen it with english voices though, it's root to many norwegian daily expressions atleast!

Danish TV-Shows are generally very good, you have made some creepy ones :D Like "Hotellet" :D

Lilja-4Ever is an OK film, but i still think Lukas Modyssons best movie is "Together", a very funny but still a serious movie.

Together: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0203166/

Also if you have seen "Bruno" and then watch "Together" then you will recognize the ginger assistent from "Bruno" in it :P

I've heard Riget is funny, also watched Girl With The Dragoin Tattoo recently (does that count?) it was quite good.

Its retarded how they translated Girl With The Dragons Tattoo... its actually named "Men Who Hate Women" in swedish, and they should have used that in English countries tbh, as this first movies isnt so much about Lisbeth but another story.

I watched it in Swedish and subtitled, as it should be. :P

Riget is very good, much better than the american remake "Kingdom hospital".

And can't really be compared to most of lars von triers other movies.

Lars Von Trier is so overrated,..

the hater is back! jk :P

I just thought of another good movie that I've seen over and over. It's Swedish and called "Jägarna" ("The hunters" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0116736/). It's about the rather special small northen communities (Devlin could've been starring!) and speficially hunters/poaching. A hunter's brother (police officer) comes back up from Stockholm, to see stuff he probably wouldn't want to see..

I watched the riget with original dub and english subs. Vid was crappy quality but it was so good that i wished trier to make more series. Btw its not that i dont like trier - bergman, its just that i watched many of their movies (i think all of trier's).

"I Kina spiser de hunde" ("In China they eat dogs" http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0180748/)
Genious Danish action/comedy about two very different brothers' "adventure". Kind of the same style as "Pusher", that was mentioned earlier..
Some of the best Danish cast to-date doing a great job in this one ;)

For me personally, there are two films from scandinavia during the last decade that really stands out (english titles):

Let the right one in (Sweden 2008)
Open Hearts (Denmark 2002)

However, no one beats Ingmar Bergman. We've had a few other good ones, but no one like him.

Police thrillers are (unfortunately) incredibly popular in Sweden. If you are going to see one, make sure it is Man on the Roof (1976). It has aged very well.
