Title: Films to see before you die.
Post by: delling on December 08, 2007, 03:33:55 pm
I'm going to start this list off with a few films, and explain why, and people can add 1 or 2 films each, with a short reason why we MUST see them.

Not just 'this film is cool', but something deeper and more meaningful -- a real reason of WHY we should see it.

#1 - Big Fish
A weird, wonderful and magical film. One of those films that keeps you wondering for 2 hours about what is, and isn't, real. Belongs in a similar vein to Kpax, but slightly more light-hearted. Fantasy/comedy at its best!

#2 - Amelie (or A Very Long Engagement, if you want something slightly more deep). Might be available under the name 'Fabuleux destin d'Amelie Poulain' on torrent sites.

This is another fantastical film -- but romance-oriented this time. If you want a heart-warming film, this is it. It's filmed perfectly, and way too much cutesie stuff. Probably the finest love/romance comedy you will ever see. A Very Long Engagement is similar, but has elements of WWII in it -- deeper, and perhaps more meaningful, and slightly less magical -- but just as satisfying.

#3 - The Silence of the Lambs
I was trying to find some kind of action/thriller for my third spot, but I think most people have seen most modern action/thrillers. So, I'll pick probably the best thriller of the last two decades. Anthony Hopkins is beyond awesome in this film. It won 5 oscars for a reason. The suspense, the script... All top-notch. It is really an engrossing film. If you haven't seen it before, make sure you watch it without outside distractions, in a dark room, with good sound. Hopefully it'll have the same effect on you as it did on me!

And! You can find out where my favourite line 'A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti.' comes from. And the more people that can do the 'ssstssttsssst' noise on vent, the better!

---

I have some other non-English films that I should probably add, but I'll wait a bit, and see what else pops up :)

#4 - Der Untergang
This was the first film that came to mind. It might not be the best film ever, but the way Bruno Ganz plays Hitler is just amazing. In short the film is about Hitler and his high-ranked nazi officers hiding in bunkers beneath Berlin in the final period of World War II. The city is under heavy fire, but Hitler is still focused on victory. Eventually he commits suicide, but that doesn't stop his followers from pursuing their goals. Amazing film.

I'd definately name "The Matrix" on this list, (Forget about the sequels).

I think I'd go for "American Beauty" and "Moulin Rouge" too(IM NOT GAY! and yes that is how they spell "red" in french, and not those stabby guys in wow).

We should probably have warfilms too. I think "Stalingrad" would be my suggestion for WW2 and "Apocalypse now" for Vietnam.

In the name of the father: Need to watch.

Forest Gump: Speaks for itself.

Of mice and men: Guy has to take care of his mentally retarded brother back in the early 1900's, very good movie.

"Elling". Norwegian movie, dubbed to endless of languages, deep and touching yada yada.

I'm going to have to add Space Balls here.  One of the best comedies of all time, imo.

Well, of the cliches there's of course Lord of The Rings and Star Wars, simply because overall they're very good stories by very talented writes and have (imo) very nice actors.

The Departed - As Nociouz pointed out I can't really spoil the plot or reason for you needing to see it here, but you just have to, and you will understand what I mean. It's a very interesting plot to follow and the acting here is also quite good and interesting.

A Beautiful Mind - Something about this movie just grabbed and touched me. The movie has Russel Crowe playing a gifted but "odd" mathematics expert who develops schitzophrenia and the rest of the plot revolves around how hard a struggle it is to live with the illness and to actually realize that he's ill and the people around him are imaginary. One of the few movies I've cried over.

Jurrasic Park - Just because they're one of the very few movie that actually have dinosaurs in them and are somewhat "ok". Not my favourite movies though.

King Kong or Godzilla (or Cloverfield?) - Simply because you have to see at least one of the "Zomg, that is a fucking huge monsterlulz"-movies at some point.

Just, re: The Departed -- See the JAPANESE VERSION first.

http://imdb.com/title/tt0338564/

It's what The Departed is based on, and possibly better, depending on whether you can handle subtitles or not.

But the US version is very, very similar, so I guess it doesn't matter all that much :)

Guys -- try to give fairly good reasons for watching films, rather than 'it was cool', or 'lots of shit gets blown up'. I want some films to watch, and I'm probably not gonna watcha Vietnam film just because it's 'cool' :P I need PROPER REASONS why I should see them before I die!

GOOD REASONS. Before I start moderating like a Nazi.

We can start another thread for trashy 'yarrr, cool film with lots of chicks and fast cars 'n shit' recommendations.

Some films are good because they have fast cars, hot chicks and explosions in every scene.  Can't all be deeply emotional scriptalicious stuff :)

Woah! There are so many good movies out there that i really like, so it would be a wall of text if I should suggest every single one of them, but I picked out a few movies from various categories:

Martial arts: Fist of legend(Jet li) The acting is HORRIBLE(what you need in a real kung-fu movie for it to be cool hehe) but the choreography is superb! You can't but admire the amount of skill and precision Jet Li possesses. Story is nothing special, but like any martial arts movie, its the fight scenes that matter :-)

Western: The trinity trilogy(Bud Spencer and Terrance Hill) Speghetti western classics that have it all; funny bar fights, shootouts with hats flying off in mass and the typical italian humor. Plus, who cant help loving Bud Spencers legendary bonk on the head!

Epic/action: The last samurai(Tom cruise and Ken Watanabe)Although I could suggest Braveheart or Gladiator, I think this one tops them both. I'm not a fan of Tom Cruise, but in this film he really shows his talents. An epic telling of the last group of Japans samurais' struggle against oppression. The story is intense, the scenery is convincing and samurais are fucking awesome man :-)

Horror: The thing(Kurt russel) An extremely chilling horror movie about an arctic expedition that finds something unusual, and are trapped in the research facility. As most movie fans know, old horror movies > new horror movies :-)

Historical/documentary: Zeitgeist. Not an actual movie release or televised program, the movie explores our past and present from a different perspective. History is written by the victors, but sometimes the vanquished have another story to tell. The movie can be watched for free online at www.zeitgeistmovie.com with various subtitles.

Foreign language: Zatoichi(Takeshi Kitano) A blind samurai finds himself entangled in a struggle between rival merchants and their gang of thugs. A unique Kurosawa-style movie with some special scenery and alot of asian humor. Highly recommended!

Among other movies I would suggest a few that have alot of subliminal and/or in your face messages: From hell, The ninth gate, They live, Eyes wide shut, 1984 and Equilibrium.

Enjoy!

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

Quite hard to tell something about this one without spoiling alot. Jim Carrey (Joel)and Kate Winslet (Clementine) undergo a procedure to erase each other from their memories when their relationship turns sour, but during the procedure Joel's subconscious realizes that it doesn't want to let go of its memories of Clementine. The best way to describe the following is: "and so begins a strange labyrinth of fragmented memories, constantly changing surroundings, and mental materializations of Clementine. The movie is like a very bizarre dream, when you're trying to interact with people, but they're not responding, and you shout and try to get their attention but they don't seem to notice." You need to pay close attention to the movie all the time, because the story is all over the place, but it's really worth it in the end when everything adds up. This movie is bizarre and amazing at the same time  :D

@ Daek - I understand that, but I still need a reason to see Awesome Action Film #1 over Awesome Action Film #2.

'More chicks' doesn't really do it for me...

'Chicks in no clothing, bending over backwards, while a guy on a motorbike jumps over them' probably would.

Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972)
A spanish conquistador and his crew is travelling to south america to find the golden city, Eldorado, and to spread christianity. This is a slow but visually stunning and hypnotic movie about crazy delusions of power.

Alien (1979)
As opposed to most sci-fi movies that are set up in a mysterious, beautiful and exciting space, space in Alien is just another shitty work place with bad salaries and stupid assignments. The monster, Alien, is by far the best monster I've seen in a movie and has been copied countless of times but never been surpassed.

Annie Hall (1977)
A wonderful comedy about love and relationships. Extremely well written and executed. Very
funny.

Badlands (1973)
Martin Sheen plays 25 year old James Dean look-a-like in the american south that falls in love with a teenager. Sheen kills her not so approving father and they run for Montana. What follows is a road movie with a lot of dead bodies. Easily the best “Bonnie and Clyde” movie ever made and Martin Sheen’s character is actually cooler than James Dean himself. Can be summarized in one word: style.

Barry Lyndon (1975)
The story of Mr Lyndons rise and fall is the best portrait I've seen of a persons life. Its fun, exciting, dark and sad. A three hour drama perfect for a rainy afternoon. Or a sunny day. Or anytime, actually.

In the Mood for Love (2000)
One of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen. It is very erotically charged even though the characters in this movie barely touch each other. It is a tribute to love and in a sense an attack on the institution that sometime limits it (marriage).

Once Upon a Time in The West (1968)
Sergio Leone made the more famous dollar trilogy but in this film he even exceeded himself. If you want to see cool characters do cool stuff accompanied by cool music, cool cloths and cool settings, this is the shit. It’s not called an opera of death for no reason.

Suspiria (1977)
Perhaps not for everyone. The plot is simple; an american student goes to Europe to study ballet and ends up in an old boarding school where a lot of weird stuff is going on. The movie got pretty bad actors and dialogue but it is an audiovisual experience like nothing else. The music, photography and the scenography is just awesome and creates a great atmosphere for this horror movie. The murders in this movie is art!

2001: A Space Odyssey (1968)
This experience (rather than a movie) starts with the dawn of mankind; where a monkey becomes the first human. Without really spoiling the movie, it ends with the first man taking the next step in evolution, from man to...something? I don't know... It's a very philosophically interesting movie for those who want an intellectual challenge. It is also an audiovisual masterpiece.

Thanks for the great list, Treach :)

I guess my suspicions are confirmed -- I have to keep going back year upon year to get to the best films.

I'm slowly working my way through the 80 and 70s now... but I'll get to the 50s eventually!

And, my first horror-genre film to make it to the Films To See Before You Die is... The Thing!

Basically, I've avoided old films for one main reason - I don't find the special effects/robotics particuarly believable. I've been so spoilt with films like LOTR or Jurassic Park, and when I see old films (especially sci-fi/horror) I just giggle.

Well, I didn't giggle much at The Thing :)

It's pretty damn scary. I guess I could've worked it out from Alien that they could make some pretty scary models, but... well... this is even more disgusting than Alien, by quite some way!

But it's not just a horror - it's psychological. Yes, there's a lot of flamethrowers involved, but most of the problems are solved using intelligent means, rather than just a big gore-fest.

If you like films where you don't know who to trust, and you like being lead up the garden path... this is a great film!

The Thing is a great movie, one of my favourites. It's easily compared to Alien but I didn't choose it because someone had already mention it.

Watch The Thing! And if you like it, why not watch a few others of John Carpenters cool action movies: Attack on precinct 13 and The escape from New York. Not as good as the Thing but definately cool :).

Oh, Infernal Affairs, which The Departed is based on, is from Hong Kong not Japan :). Both movies are very good.

Ping Pong

Japanese film about, ping pong :P. Now sports films may not be your thing but this film kicks ass the acting is absoloutly amazing and the character progression is very good too, there are some odd bits in it where you see them and think "wtf ???" then it all gets exlpained later on teh film but trust me this is an extremley good film.

The Bridges of Madison County

Very meaningfull movie that leaves you breathless. Takes some years to understand it though since most of it will mean absolutely nothing to those who haven't experienced a one night stand worth of remembering. Clint Eastwood surprised me since I would never imagine a guy like him in movie like that. Blatantly awesome!
p.s. Book is even better!

The Truman Show

I think everyone of us was trying to find hidden cameras after watching it, a disturbing story written and directed to fit common mind, I am quite sure it would have been better with deeper personality actor though. Whenever I experience a sudden turnover in my life related to work, family or my emotional life I think about it...

The Manchurian Candidate

Doesn't take to be a scientist to realise something is wrong in modern days politics, this movie gets ur mind going when you think about decisions and political reactions made in last decade.

Zeitgeist

Stunning documentary about religion, warfare and banking system in modern history. Shocking facts about world wars, vietnam war and things that we see on news every day.

Thats it for now. You can expect more quite soon :)

The Bourne Identity / Supremacy / Ultimatum.

I think this is the king trilogy of Chase-up/Cop Movies. The story is set up great, it's confusing and interesting. I really got caught by the whole 'i-dont-know-who-i-am, and-i-want-to-find-out'  thingy. Because after I watched the first part for 30 minutes, I really got curious aswell.

Con Air.

Just a good no-nonsense movie. Nicolas cage (great actor imo) plays this ex-convict caught in a jailplane that'll take him home since he's out. He gets caught up by some criminals that hijack the plane.  Well, I really enjoyed the variaty in the type of criminals. The one is more viscious then the other, and they all have their own identity and 'specialty'. Further then that it's just fun to watch.

Disturbia.

You should just watch this imo. It's a bit of a psycholagical thriller like thingy. The actors are good (the main person is the same one as in transformers, new guy, does a good job!). I just like the whole atmosphere of the movie, it doesn't take place in too much area's, which normally would've been a bit boring, but they did a good job making it rather exciting. AND OFCOURSE THERES THIS HOT GIRL IN IT!.

So here is my two recomendations;

#1 K-Pax - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0272152/

The story is about the character called Prot, who claims he is from a planet called K-Pax. His claims puts him in a mental hospital. Prot`s doctor doesn`t belive him first, but as the film moves on Prot becomes very convincing..

Awsome acting, funny and a very interesting story makes this movie a MUST-SE.

If you like the unexplainable, and mysteries about the universe see this movie.

9/10 from me.

#2 V for Vendetta - http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0434409/

I didn`t know anything about this movie before I saw it, and this made it even more awsome.
Produced by the ones behind Matrix, tought its not anything like the Matrix.

V for Vendetta is based on a graphic novel based on the same name. Set in London, in a near-future dystopian society, the film follows the mysterious V, a freedom fighter seeking to effect sociopolitical change while at the same time pursuing his own violent personal vendetta.
I have never seen a movie full of so many symbols and references, but it works in V for Vendetta. The story is wonderful and Hugo Weaving is perfect as V.

Fight Club:

It questions reality. It is strikingly thought provoking and visually stimulating and the narrating voice of Edward adds to the awesomeness.

Death Sentence

This movie made me cry a lot (which proves how manly I am).
A very touching movie which shows what a person who have lost a loved one can do in his anger.
Anyone who loves "revenge" movies will love this.

American History X

American History X is one of the most powerful movies released in years. Not since Schindler's List has the subject of racism been so potently presented. The use of black and white to portray painful flashbacks is amazing, and the settings, while not necessarily pretty, fit the story flawlessly.

So here's my list of movies of all time.

Dell, those are really worth watching

Absolute nr. 1

Dances with Wolves
3,5 hours lasting beautifully filmed all american semi-western; as it's mostly from the indian point of view. Especially the parts where Kevin Costner tries to interact with the wolf, while at the end... well not gonna spoil that. You will certainly swallow dry.

Absolute nr. 2 is a CARTOON
Disney's Robin Hood
This movie is hilarious - I even prefer the dutch version over the english thanks to the perfect typecasting. The snake is incredibly funny; both intelligence and utter dumbness put in one character. The drama in the final part is extremely well built-up, music is good and the cartoon is all-over really Disneyish. (Not like that Hercules-shit)

Nr. 3 is Enemy at the Gates
Extremely cunning to make a static movie like this so exciting. Jude Law is an excellent actor and Rachel Weis not less. Also the way the Russian Propaganda is shown is quite interesting.

Nr. 4
Strange this one has not been mentioned before: Gladiator.
Wow this movie is packed with nice shots, action, violence and a good story. Music is good, the end is so touching it almost makes you wanna cry.

I probably forgot about some, but i will add later, this should enough for a small movie-marathon.

Cheerz,
Aur.

Having read the Illiad in school, I thought Troy was pretty fail as it had some pretty weird changes compared to the original story.
The biggest story problem was that they needed to make mr. longear legolas(Paris) a hero as that would sell more tickets, where he in the original story is a superficial coward, that in no way is the guy that kills Achilleus.

It was pretty impressive to look at though.

Well I got the impression the idea was for you to hate paris for being such a bitchy fail tosser, and hate him even more for then killing Achilles - I didn't feel he was meant to look heroic for doing what he did. I really hated that character. Total twat.

What i hated most about Troy was the total absence of the Gods. They form a solid part of greek mythology and leaving them out is silly.

Ofcourse it will look more 'historic' that way, but I missed a lightning bolt (or sunshine bolt whatever) from the sky when Achilles cut off Apollo's head.

Kind regards,
Aurz.

Paris did kill Achilles from what i can remember of the illiad when i read it a few months ago.

Checked it out on Wiki and found this (Sure it might not be the most secure source, but hey, it proves what i say is not compleatly off)

"As predicted by Hector with his dying breath, Achilles was thereafter killed by Paris—either by an arrow (to the heel according to Statius), or in an older version by a knife to the back while visiting Polyxena, a princess of Troy. In some versions, the god Apollo guided Paris' arrow."

Remember also that in Greek sociaty, this was still a very dishonorable way of killing someone.

Cant recall what killed him though

Donnie Darko.

I'm not sure what there is to say about this movie, or in which genre to put it in. If I had to I'd say that it was a drama-/sci-fi-/fantasy-/thrillermovie.

It basically tells the story of an american teenager, and his life along with his imaginary rabbit friend, Frank. It's a quite deep movie and each time you see it you see things you didn't notice the previous time you watched it.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape.

Another 'deep' movie, dramallama along with comedy. Was quite a while ago since I saw this movie, but I reckon that you follow a guy, a very special guy. He's got a retarded brother that he needs to look out for and his mother laying in the bed all day long with her MASSIVE weight of 500pounds.

After learning about all the hype about that movie, I watched the Director's cut ~2 years ago and it's such a piece of balderdash.
Felt to me like some student praised cult classic you can only watch with some stoned friends.

it's not easy to make " the a Hall of Fame ". so this is more, like a "should be watched"

Nightmare Before Christmass

This is something beyond the brain, the determinatedness, the creativity... it s poetic... it's a masterpiece made by "Henry Selick" which is also working on another animation for the last 4 years which is named "Coraline" based on a book of Neil Geiman. The popular guy, the writer of Stardust, and the old Sandman series. it will be launched on the theaters in these days.
There are some movies, which should anyway watched if they had nothing but a black screen for 90 minutes.
i can say the same for the soundtrack of Conan the Barbarian, but that's kinda old stuff. And i know many people won't appreciate it. in my opinion, 1982 made Conan has still the best soundrack for the 20th century. i know that Basil Poledouris + John Milius + Arnold are not the best for making a movie. They are not even the worst. But somehow it worked. This persons met each other in the right place, right time, and made something over their potencial. So i can add that, "Conan the Barbarian 1982" is also another one to be watched. But keep in mind not to watch the false version which has been directed by Richard FLeischer. it's totally shit. it's an action/fantasy movie. it's kinda betrayal to the memory of Robert E.Howard

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon

i like it when they amplify the kung fu fighting scenes. it has also been applied to this one. But in a poetic and smooth way. The music and rhythm of the scenes worksin a beautiful harmony. The art direction and cinematography is perfect.

Gattaca

is another one. For the score, for the vision for the future vision on birth/occupation system. And the human nature of perseverance shown on this movie thrills me up.

i guess this is enough for a quick reply.  ???

Response to lotinja:
The full quote from the wiki you quoted:
from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achilles
Quote
As predicted by Hector with his dying breath, Achilles was thereafter killed by Paris with an arrow (to the heel according to Statius). In some versions, the god Apollo guided Paris's arrow.
Ajax carries off the body of Achilles: Attic black-figure lekythos, ca. 510 BCE, from Sicily (Staatliche Antikensammlungen, Munich

Both versions conspicuously deny the killer any sort of valor owing to the common conception that Paris was a coward and not the man his brother Hector was, and Achilles remained undefeated on the battlefield.

It might be something lacking in the danish translation but he is randomly hit by an arrow of many and the book does not give Paris any credit for the kill. Where in the movie it is 1v1 and he just shoots him directly.

Paris did kill Achilles from what i can remember of the illiad when i read it a few months ago.

I coudnt find those 2 movies in the other posts above , but I watched them during the weekend and imo they worth mentioning .They might not be taste for everyone , if you like too much explosive actions and fast running , but those of you who likes drama and romantic movies would find them pretty good , especially the first one , second one is more spy military style with more actions .

Meet Joe Black - romantic drama with Brat Pit and Anthony Hopkins (light and funny movie )

Spy Games - criminal drama with Brat Pit ( not sure if the name is the same on English,
I translated it myself) .

i watched them both. Joe Black was cool, and for the time it has been released "J.B" was a weird and cool concept. And the most interesting part for such a concept was, it was kinda love story.
Spy game was also cool. And what i liked most was the soundtrack.

Aguierre, Wrath of God has got a mention, making my heart warm. Quote from that film should appeal to a crazy raid lead  ;)
"I am the great traitor. There must be no other. Anyone who even thinks about deserting this mission will be cut up into 198 pieces. Those pieces will be stamped on until what is left can be used only to paint walls. Whoever takes one grain of corn or one drop of water... more than his ration, will be locked up for 155 years. If I, Aguirre, want the birds to drop dead from the trees... then the birds will drop dead from the trees. I am the wrath of god. The earth I pass will see me and tremble. But whoever follows me and the river, will win untold riches. But whoever deserts..."
I myself holds Fitzcarraldo as Werner Herzogs best work. It'a also about struggle against impossible odds and also about an idea gone wild but I guess it's about personal taste. Opera > Cities of gold so to say.

My absolute favourite film of all times, that everyone should see is The Sweet Hereafter by Atom Egoyan. A small community is struck with tragedy when a school bus accident kills a lot of children. The crash has only two survivors, the driver and one young girl. Enters a lawyer (played by Ian Holm - Bilbo you no goods) from LA who want to sue the driver and by that scratches on all the wounds from the tragedy. The movie gets your mind going and still to this day I can't forget it some 10 years since I saw it for the first time.

If you are to see only one silent movie in your life I suggest Intolerance made 1916 by DW Griffith. Hi's "Birht of a Nation" is held in higher regard today, but I disagee. Intolerance is so far ahead its time with four stories in four different timeages interwoven. And every split screen with dialogue is amazing. A must see. If you fancy that take a look at Körkarlen made by Victor Sjöström 1921. He took the movies to the next level - no cgi but it's scary as hell and looks amazing considering it's almost 100 years old.

Last for now is a comedy. Comedy is hard, Mel Brooks defined it as: "If I cut my finger it's tragedy, if you fall down an open sewer and die it's comedy" My favourite here is Planes, Trains and Automobiles as it is also a feel-good movie. The movie was made back in the days when Steve Martin was funny and John Candy was alive. I have seen this movie quite a few times and I always cry at the end having laughed the whole movie through. Thats quality.

Yeah Fitzcaralldo is great but I think Aguirre is a better film. The really cool thing about Fitzcaralldo is that the movie team ACTUALLY pulled that ship over a mountain. Herzog (director)is as crazy as his character Fitzcarraldo.

Never seen Intolerance, damn movie is almost three hours long I think? I need to check out some DW Griffith sometime though.

Körkarlen (swedish!) is definetely a great start if you want to check out silent films. It was my first and started a period of silent film watching a few years ago. I thought I would only find silent movies interesting because I'm interested in film history and our cultural heritage. But this one suprised me; silent films can be great movies! Another silent favourite is La passion de Jeanne d'Arc (1928).

I think I saw Metropolis by Fritz Lang as my fist silent movie. It's got all the robotronic übermench to fuck you up for life, it did me. Fritz Lang "M" is the one, if you are only to watch one black and white movie your entire life. Male lead actor Peter Lorre was the ultimate bad guy, I guess he was the first to get typecast.

On a lighter note, pass a thought to late Rodney Dangerfield and Back to School. "We'll take in one pitcher [of beer] evey 20 minutes and when the first of us leaves bring in a pitcher every 15 minutes" Delling made a Vonnegut mention in guild chat but I was way out of context (I was dpsing some boss (just kidding Braid, I suck)). Vonnegut cameos in this movie - what is funny is I am 100% certain I've seen a clip with Gore Vidal diss Vonnegut, saying he was asked first to starr and Vonnegut got sloppy seconds so to say.

Rodneys last words when he was hauled in to an open heart surgury: "If everything goes as planned I'll be out in a week, if things go bad I'll be out this afternoon" Sadly he left that afternoon. Back to School and Caddyshack get's my approval.

PS Watch FREAKS - it's wierd, 80 years old and scary. Also it has dwarfs & midgets. Did I mention scary...  (http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=6355110065089064433) DS

Jamba has probably already mentioned it, but for old timers like me, ya can't beat 'Gran Torino' in many ways it's a very good film, critics have hit it hard but for me it reminds me alot of both my father and his father (both R.I.P.). As such its a very heart warming film with alot of funny parts (the barber scene still makes me chuckle) and a unusual twist at the end, especially if you've seen all of the Dirty Harry films.

I do have a rather large collection of films but thought I'd mention this one for the time being.

Have no one mentioned Snatch (2000) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0208092/)? It's a funny action-comedy with some delightful English charm.

Or Freddy got fingered (2001) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0240515/)?
It's just really retarded, and have won Worst Director" "Worst Screenplay" "Worst Actor" "Worst film" and was nominated for "Worst 'Comedy' of Our First 25 Years". It's something I'd recommend to see.
"DADDY WOULD YOU LIKE SOME SAUSAGE?" - Tom Green

Waking life (2001) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0243017/) is a very philosofical film, which you really should see if you want a little brainshake.
(Pay more attention to what people say then what actually happens in the film)

Tenacious D in The Pick of Destiny (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0365830/) and Nacho Libre (2006) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0457510/). Main Character is Jack Black in both films. Watch'em cause he's funny, not because the movies are too great themselves.

For action, I'm fond of The Matrix (1999) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/). The first movie actually have some sort of storyline, unlike 2 and 3.
Most Quentin Tarantino (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0133093/) films are a must. I liked Wanted (2008) (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0493464/) aswell. Wanted is a unrealistic action movie indeed, but I like the way they only use guns/knives and no out-of-proportions weaponary or technology or fancy cars.

Not a movie*, but

Arrested Development
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0367279/

Should be a mandatory watch for everyone looking for humor! :D Never laughed so hard - or frequently - before in my life as I do when watching this show. I'm on the 3rd look-through now, but I keep the sessions juuust out of memory-reach so I don't remember all those small genious details :) Some faces/scenes I just never forget though.

I'm completely dumbfounded how it got cancelled. This should've been a 10+ seasons show imo.

My favourite character - if I can only pick one - must be Tobias Fünke. The world's first Analrapist (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YknjhnywGGI)!

The TV-show is a 10/10. No doubt.

* There is an Arrested Development movie coming up in 2011 though! It will surely be a must-see. Read more here:

Watchmen.

By far the best comic book film imo, far superior to "V for Vendetta" and one of my favourite films. I had never read the comic book for Watchmen and the 1st version i seen was the Ultimate. So the initial impact was massive.

A film shot beautifully by the same guy that done "300", it's casted superbly. It has no stars, no un-nessesary action scenes, no gimmiks. This is not Ironman, this is dark, brutal, grousome, and most of all, intellegent. The story is extremely deep, with every charactor having a different morale compass and different beliefs.

I understand people who have read the comic or graphic novel, prolly this film wont have the same initial impact. But sure as hell the comic would have had, when they read it. One of, if not the finest story ever written.

LOTR is the same, awesome story, awesome depth, but i suppose everyone seen this.

I agree with Delling on Big Fish, that made an impact on me too.

Memento.

This film is shot superbly, very engaging concept, one of the least conventional films ever made. Its about a man with short term memory loss and the story is good. But the true winner is the way the story is laid out infront of the viewer, each scene revealing more about the last.
