Check it out i say, i'm curious about the plot. (Although over the years i know not to expect to much from USA productions like this.)
But i'm sure the special FX of this movies is going to be great!

The plot is pretty obvious by now. I saw the old trailer in a 3D cinema (glasses lol) some months ago. Nice, but I can't take the design of the blue guys seriously :(

Come on, it's not about the budget what makes this movie to make your heart beating !
it's James Cameron who made the Sci-Fi Milestones in the past.
Aliens, Terminator... Best of the 80's , 90's

Can't wait to see this movie to be honest. Haven't seen any trailers, just seen a wallpaper!

Makes it more exciting not knowing what the fuck it's all about!

3D is a must for this movie, all the footage is shot with reald3d cams.

Saw it last night (not 3d)

It is well worth watching. We have seen the story before, how natives are being run over by americans for oil/profits. This is nothing new and not really interesting. Of course, as we have seen before, it is an american soldier that will be the best leader for the natives in the end.

What I found interesting though is how this american soldier enjoys his avatar more than his real life. He stops eating, shower, shaving etc and prefers to spend his time in the other world. This should have gotten more focus i think instead of the half hearted criticism on imperialism and og so popular tributes to an ecological lifestyle.

But this movie is really all about the visuals and it really delivers on that point. It is an entertaining movie despite the cliches.

7/10

(I may have small spoilters, you're warned)

Saw it yesterday aswell, though in 3D, which is an absolutely amazing experience in my opinion. They don't overdo the effect of it, which is nice, and it just makes the whole experience seem even more real. All in all, the visuals are the most impressive I have yet to see in any movie ever, and they do a fantastic job of making you believe that you're really there.

As treachery pointed out, the story isn't anything remotely as groundbreaking, but James Cameron does a very good job of telling it, and I never felt that the movie was too long or drawn out (the last half hour of The Dark Knight anyone?), despite of its 2 hours 40 minutes. I actually liked that he took his time to tell the story properly, instead of the short montage you sometimes get in movies that want to show you how a person becomes integrated in a society etc.

As a friend of mine pointed out, the fact that the main character actually betrays his race is only pulled off because of the way that the humans are only there for the unobtainium (that was the only thing about the movie that sucked. I mean, come on you're using 500 million dollars, figure out a better name) and they're the classic non-caring profitseekers. Had they been there for something that would've saved the human race from X, the story would've been totally different.

In short: SEE IT AND DO SO IN 3D! It's like nothing you have ever experienced in a full length movie, but do not expect a sci-fi story as original as District 9 for instance.

10/10

Just watched it tonight in 3D in a large cinema.

Pretty damm amazing.

Visually, its kinda a masterpiece, imo. The world, and the creatures inhabiting it, is very, very well done, as he took his time. The 3D adds to this, and makes it wonderfully immersive, though during the action scenes, its a bit of a pain as there is a lot going on, and it forces your eyes to focus on the nearer stuff (minor quibble).

As it has been pointed out before, the plot and story isn't anything new. However it is very, very well told, and in my opinion, the actions of the characters, were realistic. The cultures of the races show in the movie, while borrowed from our own world, are beautifully laid out, conceptually, and are on par with the visual affects everyone raves about.

As for the acting, well, most of the story, is told through the Avatar, so it would normally be a moot point; however, they have invested lots of money and time, attempting to make them look realistic, and I feel it did succeed. The lead marine is pretty good, as is the villain; and of course there is Sigourney Weaver.

As it has been pointed out, its a long movie, almost three hours. I tried to prepare for this, by going to the men's room just beforehand, but I also bought a coke to drink. I drank the coke, and felt the need to go an hour in. Someone had told me that there was an interval half-way through (which there was at his cinema, but not mine!), and I decided I would go then. Over an hour and a half later, when the movie finished, I was still bursting to go. Why?, because a. I didn't want to go and miss something, and b. its that good a movie, that its worth the suffering!

Do watch this. Do watch it in 3D where possible, and Do watch it in a Cinema; as watching it on a laptop, or other small screen doesn't do it justice.

Hmm, kinda as I expected. Technical excellent movie, but... I think it was kinda "dull" apart from the visuals.

What was always great about Cameron was that he had a great script combined with top notch visuals, this time it was just the visuals. I don't even mind the simple setup (bad corp against good natives), if  only there was any interesting interaction between the two factions. But instead it's just the hero/avatar exploring the world for the first half of the movie, then there's the big attack in the end. It's so fucking straightforward, simple and uninspired.

Nice watch, but that's kinda it.

9/10 One of the best movies i've seen in my life.               I was afraid to be disappointed with the end battle, because i knew i was expecting too much epicness. But is was THAT Epic. Shame the helicopter chick died though, i loved her (and her tits, my god they could have added some extra 3D to those). But i'll agree on what all of the others say 100% go see it in 3D!

Pretty to watch, however 3d at the movie was not that great. Maybe they didnt use its full potential, first movie I saw as 3d anyway. Not much to comment about characters since their actions were very predictable and the design was boring. If you can get over the bad character design and the story flaws, you have OK movie. Which I guess most can... transformers seems to be quite popular movie  :'(.

Shankski did you see it in 2d aswell?

I would really not recommend watching it in 2d if you have a chance of seeing it in 3d.

The depth of the images is so much better, it might not be like in disneyland where you have stuff coming out of the screen towards you but it definately works.

I was amazed by the images but as mentioned earlier the story didnt bring anything new.

Dances with wolves + Pocahontas + starwars.

8/10

Amazing movie, 9/10 seen in Real3D, very well told story, amazing cinematography, typical Cameron.  3D was well used imo, it wasn't in your face like in The Final Destination, it added an immersive effect.

Felt like a fantasy version of Dancing With Wolves. But a very well executed and beautiful one. I saw it in Real3D and while it was cool and all it still felt like a gimmick. I believe you need goggles to get full experience with shit coming out of the screen etc.

8.5/10

Looking forward to the smurf sex scene on Blu-ray! ;)

is real3d without goggles?

I watched it with goggles, you cant really make the 3d effect without goggles.
Title: Re: Avatar.
Post by: Goza on January 06, 2010, 03:07:47 pm
Real3D uses passive polarized goggles to seperate the two pictures.

Kagir might be talking about the systems that use the more expensive shutter goggles etc. They prob don't have the problem of dimming the projected movie. Other than that the picture/effect should be the same thou.

There's a cool tech where your glasses synchronize with the projector, and polarize/unpolarize at 50hz, or something like that.

Not looked into that tech in a few years tho'.

Asus made a graphics card a few years ago based on gefore something it had such glasses in the packet and a special plug for them, I never actually found a game that supported them though :P

The effect with stuff coming out of the screen is possible with regular glasses though I tried it in disneyland recently with oldschool red/green glasses.

I'm talking about the old school ones that you tried at science exhibits that projected the stuff right in front of your eyes hehe :)

I just felt that the distance from the screen (ie. seeing a very distinct frame) kinda put off the whole thing about objects/people coming in/out of the picture. You need at least a Planetarium-like way of displaying it to utilize the effect imo.

Great entry Mousilicious :]

But still, Avatar (imo) is the best science-fiction ever ! it may be similar with Pocahontas, and yes Pocahontas had a good story aswell. Like billions of same stories.

But it's the acting, the environment, the storytelling which makes this one the best Science-Fiction ever. I watch a lot of movies, but i do not remember that i ever left the Theater totally satisfied (like i did today). (at least Like for 10 years)
it was entertaining and i guess "Avatar" from now on is a milestone on the Science-Fiction history. The Drama could be stronger, the end title song could be a non MariahCarey like crap ! And that's why i give this movie a 9.8 out of 10 !
