Time for a new desktop
« on: September 04, 2017, 05:24:15 pm »
As the title says, I'm in the market for a new desktop. I'm not all that good with brands, benchmarks etc, so I was hoping for some help from you elite PC nerds. I'm also looking to get the desktop as quiet as possible, since I'm in a combined study/bedroom. I'll keep all the prices in euro. While Norway is very expensive, tech isn't taxed all that high and the prices are usually more or less the same overseas.

1.Case

Starting off easy with the case. I figure there's not too much to say here, but I wonder if anyone got any experience with some of those padded noise reduced cases from Fractal. I get the principle, but I'm afraid that all that padding will only make it a lot warmer inside the case, fan speeds up and everything goes out the window. Might it be better with a really open case and go for two good and large 140 fans?

Fractal Design - Define C Black - 86 Euro

The alternative would be a very cheap neat looking one where I would replace the presumed shitty fans with good Noctua fans or similar.

2. PSU

Not as interesting, but very important is the power supply. Here it's a bit more tricky since I don't know shit, and most of the reviews on the site where I buy the components (Komplett.no) are useless. One half give it one star and says it's shitty and the other half gives it 5 star and says that it's quiet as mouse. From what I can gather, 80 Plus Gold is pretty good where it's more effective and produce less heat, and modular is nice to get just the cables you need to get better airflow.

EVGA BQ 600W Hybrid Modular 80+ PSU - 80 Euro

Looking at some reviews this seem to score pretty good despite only being 80 Plus Bronze. The most pressing question I have is regarding fanless PSU's. Is this at all something you can go for in a gaming rig? Or is the power consumption just too high and this is mainly meant for office computers?

3. CPU

Now onto the more tasteful bits. I've done some reading on i5 vs i7 and the general consensus seems to be that i5 is perfectly fine for gaming. I'm not doing some heavy duty rendering and graphics work, I play WoW & Dota and the occasional other RPG of the year.

Intel Core i5-7600 Kaby Lake Prosessor - 245 Euro

This is the CPU that more or less gets pushed on me by the site. Since I'm going for a quiet computer I'm not going for one I can overclock to shit. Should be fine right?

3.1 Cooling

Everywhere I go I read about how shit the stock fans are and they should all be lined up and shot. The desktop I have is a bit noisy, but I have no idea if that's the stock, CPU, GPU or PSU fans acting up. If it's true that all the intel stock fans are terrible then this is the one I have in mind:

Noctua NH-U9S - 64 Euro

I also looked into some of those ready to go watercooling systems, but that has to be overkill when I'm not clocking right? There are some really cheap ones but they are probably just shit compared to a good heatsink and a fan?

4. Motherboard

Here I'll admit that I don't know shit. Zero. But word around the watercooler is that ASUS is the only way to go?

ASUS Strix B250F Gaming, Socket-1151 - 145 Euro

How does this one look? Is there any worth putting some extra cash into a motherboard? Or is that best saved for the GPU?

5. RAM

I don't know much here either except bigger numbers means more fun?

Crucial DDR4 2400MHz 8GB - 78 Euro

This one seems fine? And then I can buy another pair if needed and when I got some more molah. There are much more expensive sets to get with like 3000MHz and shit, is that even worth it? What does it buy you? (I'm on a budget)

6. GPU

Now onto the tasty bits. Here's what I have lined up:

MSI GeForce GTX 1050Ti 4GB Aero ITX OC - 172 Euro
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 3GB - 236 Euro
ZOTAC GeForce GTX 1060 6GB Mini - 301 Euro

We're finishing off on my price range here. I hear that the 1050 is garbage, is the 1050Ti the same? Do you get much more for the extra memory here or is that some rendering graphics stuff again that's not really worth it for mid level gaming? The 1070 is probably a lot better than these ones again, but I'm afraid that might be a bit out of my price range (starting on 525 Euro).

7. Storage

SSD

HyperX Fury 240GB 2.5" SSD - 106 Euro

Summa Summarum

With the regular 3GB 1060 that puts me on 1040 Euro which around my budget. Good PC? Many killing things? This leaves me with enough room to get a 144Hz screen that I've been ogling. Give me a shout if you see some areas where I'm putting too much/too little cash, or if there's something I'm forgetting to get this PC nice and quiet! Thanks!

Skimmed this so might be a bit of a pointless reply:

AIO water coolers are garbage don't get one. Stick to noctua or be quiet!

Be Quiet! PSU's are unmatched also, EVGA are good but generally even the 80+ unrated ones are better than most silver/golds (it costs them to rate them, but they still produce at the same quality)

Could you add the 1070 to that? Do I have to download some shit from that site to compare cards?

So slighty better, but much lower bang for buck? Better stick with the 1060 then

unless you plan on spending another 3-400 on screens there's not much point with the 1070 imo.

Then yes, get 1060. Newer version of the screen I have, I'm v happy with it. That said, I think Samsung has one in the same price range that might be slightly better.

That's a FreeSync screen though, you need an AMD card to get anything out of that :P

Yeah will probably get more, but that's quite easy to fix later when I have more cash
