Title: Warhammer 40.000: Dawn of War II
Post by: Grishnag on April 11, 2008, 07:10:34 pm
so yeah relic entertainment announced dawn of war 2 a couple of weeks ago and i started browsing around the intrawebs for some massive win screen shots

anyway here is some info about DoW2

Quote
- Uses the Essence 2.0 engine with Havok physics, all optimized for DX10 and multicore support.
- Units also use CoH-like unit AI for awareness and pathfinding to find cover and such.
- While DoW 2 shares the same (upgraded probably) engine as CoH it won’t be “CoH in space”, while soldiers in CoH will ask themselves if flanking the enemy is the right option, in DoW2 it will be more like Space Marines asking themselves if they should use their jetpacks to jump over an Ork squad to attack them in the back. Different settings, different kinds of warfare.
- Preview only showed a destroyed city landscape, akin to DoW (but more detailed), other tilesets will offer deserts, jungles, mountains and other cities.
- Only the Orkz and Space Marines were revealed, more races on the way obviously and to be to revealed later this year (though how many isn’t known).
- Co-op campaign for both the Orkz and Space Marines, apparently not for the other to-be-revealed races.
- Relic wants to give players rewards at the end of a mission like wargear (armor, weapons, rare objects); “Let’s pimp out squads with cool stuff!”, you will see these items in-game as well of course.
- You’ll fight your way through the campaign with the same squads.
- A squad leader (one or several?) will need to survive if you want to complete a mission; you really have to look out for your squads and don’t treat them like cannon fodder.
- The campaign lets Space Marines operate from a spaceship, you’ll get a view of an underlying planet and you’ll be able to choose from different missions (which are tagged with difficulty colors, green, blue and red).
- Certain reward items won’t be usable at once in the campaign, so they’ll be taken back to the SM spaceship for research.
- Release in early 2009 or later.
-Buildings can be occupied (like in coh)
-Environment completely destructable ^^
-Vehicles are bigger (there were only a couple of dreadnought shots)
-LOTS of blood (i saw the screens and thought LOL)
-Over the top finishing animations
-when units are in melee, pieces of battle armor can be chopped off in the action

Second time I heard 'early 2009' for Diablo III.

http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/faq/#3_1

Do you have a source that says otherwise?

The game is noooo where near completion at the mo... like mega-early Alpha.

Finally!

There was a servay on the THQ website like 6 months before they brought out Soulstorm, ask which new race they should introduce Tyranids, dark elder, or witchhunters. Was really dissapointed when it was the last two in the expansion.

Looking amazing in the trailer.

Had a go at it last night with Crazy/Malik/Douche.

Played Tyranids, enjoyed the lack of base building (something I enjoyed in RA1, but never since. Even then it got tired fairly fast). Though there seems to be some horrendous balance issues as well. The Eldar Avatar of Khaine in particular seems to have been implemented without a moment's thought about balance.

Still, the way it plays feels nice enough, and given some balancing work it could be alright.

they implemented eldar without thinking tbh

warpspiders absolutley rape EVERYTHING
wraith lords rape everything aswell hell it can 1shot a predator tank without much effort (ask lotinja *giggles*)

then again instant suppresion heavybolters and shuriken cannons  are wank to
oh and yes i know tyranids have a instant supression weapon but unlike the other 2 it fires 1 shot instead of raping the squad it suppresses i had my hormagaunts get insta-supressed but 1 shot and then raped by the other shots a heavybolter does

then again hormagaunts look so happy when they are in range of warriors with adrenal glands

oh oh if we have like 6 IE people we could do some 3v3 at some point if people are interested

seems like the 'authentication servers' they use are about one hundred times flakier than battlenet. Lots of people dropping intermittantly or frequently and still no way to rejoin a game in progress (even though the ai takes over dropped players).

Been playing it aswell.

And yes, the Avatar of Khane is OP. But if you can get a Terminator squad up with missiles, it's pretty doable. Also the Spacemarine commander with Terminator armor is quite heavy aswell.

This game still needs tons of balances, but so far I love it. The game doesn't take long, which is what I enjoy. You just roam around with your characters, instead of having to build a base.

Stop abusing apostrophe's, you are not even applying any rule's, just dotting them around some word's with s at the end and leaving them off some other's with no logic.

Is it replacing a letter (It's as in It is)? Is it signifying possession (Lotinja's post)?

Also, Eldar is plural on its own ("its" is a special case for possession and the apostrophe - mainly because it is always possible to tell by context. It's possible I threw in that sentence just for this demonstration).

Finished the single player campaign over the weekend (only Space Marines available, doh!).

The often-heard "diablo with squads" fits it quite well IMO. Not enough RTS for my taste, I prefer base building stuff. You pretty much just hop from support point to support point (where you can replenish your squads for free) the entire game. 80% of the campaign maps feel like random skirmishes, either "kill the boss in the top corner" or "defend this building".

It's still fun with a big "just one more level" factor thou, thanks to gearing up your squad, the presentation and 40k feeling. And hell, did Blizzard steal all their Starcraft stuff from Warhammer 40k...

Post by: kawe on February 23, 2009, 04:44:16 pm
If you enjoy base building, dow2 will let you down on that front.

But tbh base building in RTS games always seemed to essentially amount to a fixed process of buildings that to me kind of got in the way of actually playing the game. The part I enjoy about basebuilding was to build a cool base, but that was never really going to work if you wanted to actually win a game.

Overall I'm pretty glad there's finally a little bit of a slimmed down refined rts available in the form of dow2. 'Old-school' RTS is still well catered for (for now) with C&CRA3 as far as I understand.

It pretty much craps down on the concept or RTS, the point of it is watching multiple bases, oraganising simultanious assaults, managing resources optimally to win, making choices and sacrifices, and micro :P

dow2 brings it down to 'just' micro - and there is very little of it since you cant move anything less then a squad, and you have only 4.

From a "can i be pro at this game" aspect, this is pretty much crap, only cool to play the champaign and listen to the nicely done narration tbh.

You are very obviously talking only about the single player, no such squad cap exists on multiplayer. To have talked about the, "can I be a pro at this game" and only mention the singleplayer seems very silly. SP and MP in this are nearly two totally different games.

Wanted to refresh this thread.

They've recently re-worked the tier 1 units, now making them as powerful as Tier 3, and changing the general tactic of the entire game.

And, I wanted to remind people as to why Chaos should be the next race.
