Title: Iron Man
Post by: Starbrow on May 02, 2008, 09:34:49 pm
Saw this movie the other day, actually quite good for a Marvel superhero movie, and surprisingly, it's extremely funny most of the time! Not very typical for such a movie, it doesn't really take it all too seriously, and just sets out to be a movie that's worth seing, instead of being all political and such bullshit.

8,5/10 from me...

Saw it today; great film.

Well, the scenes with Robert Downey Jr. in them are great. The rest are pretty crappy.

But hey, luckily he's in about 90% of the scenes.

Still remains one of my favourite actors of today!

Oh, and did anyone else think that with Gwynneth Paltrow the director probably thought to himself 'Shit, I can't use Kirsten Dunst, she's already taken... I'll have to get something similar...'

Then, 2 days after that 3rd "Least I Could Do" comes out, Ctrl Alt Del releases their Iron Man comic that's almost identical.

Only really noticed just now when I was reading some Least I Could Do that I'd missed, and remembered Scott Ramsoomair ripped into Ctrl Alt Del as an April Fools', when in the past Ctrl Alt Del had basically carbon copied some Metal Gear Solid gag from VG cats ::)

Edit**
Just found Ramsoomair's Ctrl Alt Del parody :D

By the way, while I remember: Did anyone else notice the HUGE similarity between the scene where he puts on his suit to go to Afghanistan, after the tests, and the human introduction video from Starcraft 2, which can be seen here (http://youtube.com/watch?v=oGjN-3grR3g). Points that I find similar are the stepping into the foot holders, holding arms out to the side while stuff get's fixated to the body, and the various flexing armorparts.

Ya... gotta be a comic book nerd to understand the last bit. I guess some might appreciate it :)

Star -- it's a summer blockbuster, but with a bunch of really good, old-school (ish) actors. Jeff Bridges, Paltrow and Downey Jr. It's not like Spiderman where you're lucky to get 1 big name actor.

But yeah, of course it's just a lot of fun. Don't watch it expecting to be moved deep into your soul :)

I must say I liked it a lot better than spiderman. But I am a big Iron Man fan :)

Hmm. Not as good as I expected. After hearing all the "yays" about it.

The "zomg weapons are bad, I am going nice now" didn't cut it for me. I thought one spin of the movie would be that Stark is not that typical superhero, but more of a rockstar that'd use his powers for his own good, too. Not to save humanity from evil weapons and go all pussy.

Cons:
- expected it to be more funny/comical/taking itself less serious
- the cheap in-your-face rock music was THE HORROR! /facepalm
- the German dubbing was pretty shit. I guess they fucked up a lot of the movies' charme with it. Need to watch it in English once a DVDrip is out.

Pros:
- Jeff Bridges going for the Patrick Steward look. Fuck, awesome.

6.9/10 with zero rewatch value

Pfft... it's all about Downey's dialogue and mannerisms. And Paltrow, even.

But yeah, music was pretty shit. It was pretty laugh-at-itself I thought!

As I said, the German dub was quite shit. Guess he's way cooler in English.

Well I was kind of finding the vital flaw in your review... I know the Germans are famous for their awesome dubbing (Friends!!), but still...

Summer Blockbusters are ALL ABOUT THEIR AWESOME DIALOGUE.

German dubbing is usually quite good. But, well, exception to the rule I guess.

And shitty dialogue can kill a summer blockbuster. Action scenes with laughable music and boring/bland voiceover don't work! Damn he was talking to his stupid computer all the time... while flying the suit, while building it, while shooting shit... well all the time.

go watch the english version...
Title: Re: Iron Man

Indeed, knowing both english and german, I've been forced to watch a few dubbed movies that I have seen before in the original version, both at home and in school, and to be honest it makes the dialogue and feel of the movie so much worse.

Rating a dubbed movie that's mainly about funny dialogue = no good.

I quite liked it!  Needed more explosions, though.  And more posing in the suit.

It doesn't count as a place that has summer when it's ABOVE THE POLAR CIRCLE!

We have summer too! Except this week, it seems, as it's a blizzard out there now....
Anyway, Iron Man's hot enough to make up for the ice here...:P
