Title: Spotify Playlists
Post by: Tyler on February 25, 2009, 03:39:43 pm
For those that don’t know www.spotify.com is an online jukebox that allows people to share playlists. I’m not sure which countries it works in besides Sweden and the UK but I guess we will find out.

As I spend quite a bit of time at work listening to so I want your imba playlists!

Not that I have OCD or anything but I use a couple of rules when setting up my playlists. I create two main types of playlist, single artist and multi artist. Neither should not be over 80 minutes long and the multi artist ones never have the same artist twice.

Here are a couple of examples Turin Brakes (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/3GjfdATprXkFJ7gMMjq2cw) and Hits 2008 II (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/5XwDqDMQc19JBEG0zXDJIF).

So give!

Oh, that's pretty neat...!

OK, I'll have to make some playlists, but you probably won't like them -- but you'll give them a whirl, right? :)

Wow, Velvet Underground sound just like Razorlight. Actually, it's like Razorlight just ripped off this song entirely.

OK, this is 'Musical Combos' (with a focus on strong orchestral themes):

http://open.spotify.com/user/mrsebastian/playlist/1ombCs5ChzaRN3TLtJKCkA

The 'flow' is fairly good, though as you're switching from musical to musical, it's more like a rollercoaster that goes up and down a lot :)

And a Jazz/Soul one (basically, Miles Davis & Gil Evans, with a huge lump of Marvin Gaye in the middle):

It needs a way to comment on songs...

Never heard this song by Elton John before, Tyl -- it's cool :)

That second playlist is more to my taste Dell. Kind of Blue is one of my favourite albums ever, I also really like Sketches of Spain.

I have been meaning to try Marvin Gaye out though as I like a fair bit of soul (Al Green, Aretha Franklin etc). So this will be a good place to start.

Vorte I can invite you, post or pm me your email address.

Yea, Kind of Blue is lovely :)

The rest of Out of the Cool is great also. A lot of the jazz albums that I have aren't on Spotify (I guess because the jazz guys were just so damn prolific...)

What's Going On is quite different from the rest of Gaye's stuff -- the rest is still quite 'R&B Sex God' kind of thing. What's Going On is often considered one of the best albums of all time, tho'.

Will check out Sketches of Spain!

You might want to check out the 'Kind of Blue / Porgy & Bess / Sketches of Spain' album on Spotify -- Porgy & Bess is a good intro to musicals and light operetta... and performed by Miles Davis! YEAH!

You can link directly to albums too Dell. Here is another awesome Miles Davis one, In A Silent Way (http://open.spotify.com/album/6iTTE1lkKdvZSpkiMYb2Xm).

Cool :)

Just building up to the second crescendo in Sketches of Spain at the moment.

My grandmother used to watch him live regularly... And Ella Fizgerald and Sammy Davis Jr...

Damn her.

This album of Marvin Gaye's is even more jazzy than What's Going On:

http://open.spotify.com/album/6EmPqDm8w7Yv8AEpBdj3q5 -- Let's Get It On (with the title track being the song that we all know and love). Listen through the first 8 tracks, which is the original album release.

Track 9 is a delicious instrumental jazzy/soul number. The rest is OK, worth a listen if you want to get to know his music a bit better I guess :)

Here are some more!

This is what i was listening to when I was your age 1990s (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/31vkjHaYfYPdLfxBG0XlMb).

Ok so you have aged a little, it was more like this 2000s (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/5ZB7r12wNIAyx0QR6Qbw63).

Some idiot was dissing Prince on this forum! Cop your ears around this no ballads included (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/6dEaIpCHUfeD8bXDu8LmLJ).

If Prince is a bit too cheerful for you try Radiohead (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/4bfI5bc78ePKFH1xsVDaCa).

And finally here is my latest random playlist (http://open.spotify.com/user/drigby2000/playlist/0QzbAupYubBYs3CU86cKSc).

'Shook' is good too -- but I prefer the other!

Incidentally, I think my mother went out with Ian Dury, or his brother... something like that. Way back.

'Chad' is great.

I've only just started listening to Curtis Mayfield... and then a track of his shows up in your playlist! I love 'Miss Black America'.

Not really making playlists atm -- just saving entire albums, and listening to them :)

Still, got a couple that I've made this year:

I got all excited at the Classical one... and then find out it's just a bunch of 'The best Classical songs EVER!!!' albums stuck together.
Title: Re: Spotify Playlists
Post by: Decay on December 26, 2010, 07:56:26 am
Well, yeah... Have to admit that I'm very mainstream when it comes to classical music, but doesn't make it any less enjoyable for me.

Besides, they are 'The best of' for a reason, I haven't bothered finding the good non-mainstream ones. Since I have no means of finding them other than by listening to them, and why not start from the generally accepted 'top'.

The same goes for the Jazz playlist. But not for the mixed one, I think I can justify every single song I've selected for that list.
