Title: District 9
Post by: Goza on September 07, 2009, 12:44:46 pm
Independence-Day-like spaceship shipwrecks over Johannisburg, inside huddled, starving insectoid aliens are found. Unwelcomed by the humans, they are confined to a slum (District 9). After 20 years, the government plans to clear out the place and evict the aliens to somewhere further away. Out of sight, out of mind.

That's no spoiler, that's the movie's initial situation. It begins as some kind of documentary showing the workday (heading the eviction) of some bureaucrat baboon who got the job due to his father-in-law. Then stuff happens.

Apparently the director was supposed to shoot the Halo movie. When that was canned again, Peter Jackson instead gave him a $30 mio budget to direct whatever he wanted. He chose a remake of his short "Alive in Joburg" (to be found on youtube).

It's an interesting movie due to it's idea & setting, the parallels to real life Johannisburg are not very subtle... Later on it gets quite predictable and has some logic errors, but who cares. Being #44 of IMDB top100 is a bit extreme thou, prob due to the hype, producer name and well made trailers (which btw make it look like a suspense/thriller flick, which it isnt).

I thought it was an ok film.  Wouldn't give it the high rating that is has, though.

just watched it, and i dont understand the hype at all.

sure, its a cool concept, but the characters are just too simple and overdone, from the supersticious tribeleader to the overzealous soldier. the story is kind of simple and easy to understand and predict aswell. i would call it a regular action movie.

it does not deserve to be in the top 250 on imdb. lately, few movies in that list deserve their spot, but thats what you get from viewer-reviews determining the rating. it all comes down to flavor of the month movies, where the top rated movie is usually the most advertised one. Dark knight was a good example, because of the hype around heath. it was not rated #1 because of the actual movie, but because all that surrounded it.

district 9 is a decent watch with good cgi, but its not a movie-of-the-year kind of flick.

yeah. This one is a must see for sure. Because of it's cool Cgi & concept.
But that's all. The storytelling was techniqual good and different! but the story itself was not ?

i feel that the movie of the Year will be ---> "AVATAR"

Apparently the main characters performance was entirely improvised, as was most of the shoot to give it that realistic feel :o

I liked it!
I found myself pitying an alien getting shot in the head and then laughing as a human blew up. Felt wierd.
