There has actually been a lot of discussion lately of the environmental footprint of the internet. There was actually a study made trying to determine how much CO2 emission one google search produced.

Think about the amount of servers,routers etc. that are running 24/7 to make your downloads work, how many peers must have their home pc's turned on at night so you can torrent.
Sadly it is not as simple as it looks :P

Our carbon footprint would be way better if we just shot ourselves in the face ASAP.
