Title: The Hurt Locker
Post by: Goza on January 11, 2010, 01:09:45 pm
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0887912/

Stumbled across this by accident. Never heard about it (apparently it's from 2008, but it opened only a few months ago here). The lastest by Kathryn Bigelow, that 90s action-flick director (Strange Days, Blue Steel, Point Blank), about an elite bomb-defuse-squad in Iraq.

It's no action film, but all about suspense. Found it interesting how it shows the futility/incalculableness/impossibleness/insanity involved. Of course you never know how close to reality a movie is.
Only thing they could have cut is the yay-a-man-gotta-go-what-a-man-has-to-do bullcrap in the last 5 minutes.

Yeah I have heard this is really good.

Btw I just saw a trailer for a new Robin Hood movie, Starring Russel Crowe as Robin.

It looks really really bad.

Then I saw a Trailer for a New Karate Kid movie, with Jackie Chan as the sensei, and the kids black. That looks win.

Also new A-team movie!

Guess 2010 is the year of the remake.

I watched this one a few days ago. It's a good movie, but it has some ... attitudes that I didn't quite like. I guess it's just a matter of taste, but it could have been made into a much better film if the focus shifted a bit.

It got some good analogies as well as nice picture (cinematography?)

Worth a look!
7/10

Delling: give "spoiler" function on these boards!

What attitudes?
The main guy is kinda an arrogant prick, yes. But I think that's intended.

About the spoiler thing, why not. Didn't bother me, this isn't a starcast movie.

I thought the main character was understandable, but not the others. They just seemed a bit more loosely put together... dunno, didn't really like it.

And the spoiler; it was like it was on purpose! Like a reverse trend of the norm. But I wanted more of those tbh!

Just seen it. Liked the special effects, the story was ok. I didn't like it that much, the ending was crap imho. It's just an ok watch.

6/10.

Ya, last 5 mins were not so great.

Should've ended in the car: 'Do you know why I do it?'

'Nope'

Good film tho'! Very nicely filmed, edited, etc -- nice mix of shaky-documentary + clean/sharp stuff.

Good film. The intensity in some parts is unmatched in any other film i've watched recently.

Didn't move me much.. The whole cowboy attitude got to an annoying point and I guess the ending part is already covered above.
Nice to get insight in a narrow field of work however ;)

Ya, I mostly thought it was interesting, more than anything else. Didn't move me much either (though the 'body bomb' was pretty grim...)

saw it last week. the movie is showing the war from the USA point of view. it's nonsense ofc. But the audience liked that idea, especially hollywood!
They like to see their troops saving lives, sacrificing themselves, defusing bombs.
The audience of USA needed to believe that shit. Because there is too much evidence, that USA unleashed hell in iraq. 1million casualties since the war broke out.
When there is no explanation for the sin, movies help you out. They help you how to explain it to your children. They help you to manipulate the truth.
And that is the way to the shiny OSCAR !  ;)
But Cinematically the movie was OK! Should be watched

That movie was not that much of a propaganda film as alot of other U.S military movies are. I have seen propaganda movies, and this isn't one of them.

I liked the documentary feel to it, but the concept of defusing one bomb after the other kinda got boring after a while. Though I am glad it wasn't in the form of other Hollywood movies.

It was a nice watch, nothing special though.

it's absolutely propaganda. But yes, unlike the national and Strict ones at 2nd world war, this one keeps it slight and a little hidden.

Well you said it yourself, World War II movies are alot more extreme. And pretty much any movie about Vietnam.

I can't really name them right now, but any high budget hollywood movie about the u.s army is enough evidence.

Myabe I was too bored of the movie itself to see the propaganda in it, but still... it's not that extreme.

yeah, the extreme point here is  "the movie won 6 oscars"  ???

I don't get the author of that article. IMO total bullcrap.

"For all the graphic violence, bloody explosions and, literally, human butchery that is shown in the film, The Hurt Locker is one of the most effective recruiting vehicles for the U.S. Army that I have seen."

The soldiers are shown doing a ridiculous futile job. I'm not sure to whom this would seem diserable. Maybe the stupid "lol bombs, have you seen that explosion? Fuck yeah!" crowd. I already mentioned the dumb ending in my previous post. Still, that doesn't make this a propaganda movie IMO.
