Title: Another new computer!
Post by: Inphy on January 22, 2010, 11:04:45 pm
So, I'm making another computer for a friend of mine this time. (I'm so friendly that I'm doing so much stuff for friends, I'm a real good friend!)

He wants some high-end gaming system. That'll last for some time.
I came up with the current:

GeIL Value Dual Channel 4 GB, PC3-10666, 1333 MHz, 7, Non-ECC, Kit Of 2
WD Caviar Black 640 GB, 7200 Rpm, 32 MB, S-ATA II/300
Asus Crosshair III Formula
AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Rev.C 3.20 GHz, 4000 MHz, 4x 512Kb, 6 MB, Boxed
Asus Radeon HD 4890 1GD5 1024 MB x2

Just the main components, casing + PSU will come later one, those aren't that important. Or, doesnt really.

Suggestions are preffered :D

Why you'd buy a 640gb hd when 1tb ones are like the same price, I have no idea.

Also nvidia/intel > ati/amd :(

Meh tweakers.net -.-

Used tomshardware.com mostly.

But yeah, you got a point, 1tb intead of 640. But this one has a 32mb cache. And 1TB with 32MB, it's 20 euro's or so. But it's for a friend who doesn't need it. So why spend more if you won't use it.

Afaik for the current gen of gpus, ati have something to beat out nvidia in any bracket (pure performance, bang per buck etc). However, re. processors my impression is that one of the intel i5 ones is equal/better to that amd 955, but the socket is likely to stick around longer.

That said, if he really wants to go high-end for something that'll last, I'd definitely go with an i5 or i7. Also, doing 2x4890 seems odd, when there's a single 5870 that is nearly as good as a 4870x2 (bear in mind 4890s are just slightly clocked up 4870s here).

that HDD is the right choice, but my recent experience shows that the weakest link in a new system is HDD, i advice to use an SSD for primary system space or a raid5 (needs 3 HDD) out of that WD caviar black is the best possible solution.

I'm currently using 2x Sapphire HD5850 and single one beats the 4890 about same price and 5850 has dx11 support.

I totally agree with kawe about the CPU.

Just got a Samsung F3 (1TB), and it's pretty neat. Cheap'ish too.

Grab 2 of them... and either have 2TB, or RAID 'em :)

Well, this friend doesn't even know how to use Kazaa (or some other programme like that) so I'll doubt he'll even get 40gb of data ;p

Ah yes, followed your advice on the GPU Kawe, thanks. He won't be needing the i7, plus it's a bit over budget. So i'll stick with the AMD, let's see what price they can offer me no. Time to use my charms :D
