So it seems the t2 community restarted the authentication servers after vivendi shut them down (the bastards) a year ago and I completely missed it!
The game has been made free to download and it's really really awesome.

We should play some time!

I was like UBER pro at that game!
I'm definitely in, if you guys are gonna play it :p

Looks like some weird ass "flying spacemen" game.

Bang on, Inphy! It's people in various types of armour with jump jets and the ability to 'ski'.
-
Ah, skiing... that's just like bunny hopping right? Like, it was never an intentional mechanic, but they put it in after people used it?
-
In Tribes 1 a physics 'bug' meant you could press the jump button quickly while going down slopes to slide or 'ski' around. Somebody eventually made a script so that, when you held jump, it pressed jump over and over for you and skiing was born. It was so awesome that it was built into t2 and t3. Unfortunately they simplified it for t3 (removed the ability to 'carve') and most of the t2 hardcore abandoned the game.
The 'purists' from tribes 1 claimed it ruined the game... they were not in the majority!

Ya, I remember now!
I had a friend at uni that was in a Tribes clan.
They were biiiiiig clans. Like... 40, 50 players or something?
One of the first big-multiplayer games right?
-
Yeah, think so. The original T2 matches were 14v14. Eventually scaled down to 12v12 for the faster classic (tribes 1 conversion) mod and then 10v10 and 7v7 near the end of my playtime.
64 player servers were popular.

I hear the mmo planetside was a lot like tribes aswell, though I never played it. That had really big battles n stuff.
-
Yeah, I watched others play Planetside. My uni friend who played Tribes moved to it. Said it was OK!
I think it died a death tho', or it's almost dead.

Superb game, kept me going in various guises (14v14 base, then 12v12 classic), until WoW release. Tried T:V (aka Tribes 3) even competitive but the feeling just wasn't right.

pretty much this.
It was an alright game, but it was filled with Aimbots/People shooting through walls and what not.
And it also sucked if you didn't have a clan or some sort of group
