Title: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Palmar on April 27, 2010, 06:10:07 pm
This will be the official thread for our first ever attempt to play a game of civilization.

Requirements:

1. Civ4 Beyond the sword, updated to the patch Delling linked in the other thread.
2. Free time from raid-end tonight, so we can get the game started. I realize this is a bit late, but it won't be more than an hour tops, just to get in the game.
3. Free time this Saturday afternoon to play 1-2 hours of hardcore rounds

Players:

Please leave your name and preferred civ leader in a reply to this post, I will then create a game with all the selected leaders.

Pálmar - Mansa Musa
Delling - TBD
Chippen - Bismarck
Grishnag - Whatever Dutchtard we can find
Hugman - Churchill
Kilizion - Saladin
Tyler - Huayna Capac

Rules:

Inland Sea map
turn limit: 120 turns
No tech trading
normal diplomacy
map size: standard
game speed: normal
victories: all
turn timer: 12h

We'll then work other things in for the next game, I predict us reaching early middle ages or so in so few turns, so there'll definitely not be any nuking for this first game, but it's a testing game anyway!

Grishnag

would like to play the dutch if its not to much trouble (nationalism ftw ect ect)

also are we gonna end the raid early today then? yes yes

Post by: Hugman on April 27, 2010, 06:42:51 pm
Hugman - haven't really played that much, so I don't know what i'm doing most of the time, so I'll go with Churchill/English, just for the sake of it.

Remember that B-raid has to finish too grish! (of course we could just kill Lich King and end 4 hours early).

I'm thinking Greek or Roman for Seb, they are pretty decent I seem to remember, though tbh it doesn't really matter that much overall (unless Palmar gets like the uber-scout warriors and pwns us early).

Btw what is the difference between Civ 4 norm, warlords and beyond the sword? Just more leaders and a few new units?

I don't have the game yet, and I never played it b4, so i would be über noob if i was to join your games, i think think i'll be able to follow the 12h turn anyway, but if you want a naab if you decide to go with some 24h game Im up for it.

would have been nice to have an actual long game instead of just killing someone the first chance you get...

I say we call Hugman the winner and start again.

I think its a valuable lesson to us newbies to have at least 2 units in/near our capitals...

Yeah Grish, I thought that this was just a trial game, and that we would start a new one on Sat anyway. Next time I'll play more conservative.

Yes I hacked into Hugman!

We need to find if its possible to password protect each civ. Maybe if you don't have a password for the game then we can set one per player?
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: delling on April 28, 2010, 01:21:06 pm
Yar, you can... but Palmar has to set up the game, rather than all of us starting in the lobby -- or something like that.

That's why he wanted our name/civs on the forum, so he could set it all up.

So, I normally work Saturdays, though its normally just the morning. However sometimes I do work the afternoon too, and I think I am needed until 3pm uk time this Sat. I will try and see if it can be changed, but if not I can't make it until after 3pm UK time.

Is it possible to do it Thursday evening or sometime Friday? or will that conflict to much with raids/whatever?

I would like to be part of it!

Game went OK...!

A bit slow in parts, but I think we can blame a lack of single-player experience for that.

Definitely drags on a bit for single-night play... perhaps two nights per game could work, or just do the iron man thingee.

Was a bit fun, but I prefer a games that are a bit more "skillbased" :p

Reminds be a lot of Risk, getting the shit kicked out of you if two people decides to take you on at the same time ):< PALMAR AND CHIPPEN! >:(

Diplomacy is much more valuable than twitchy fingers, Civ4 is a very skill-based game. If you find yourself getting kicked by two people at once a lot in games like that, you're doing something wrong.

And here's a tip to all the people that are worse than I at this: I may be wrong but I think Civ4 favors defending heavily, so all you have to do is to make sure that attacking you would be too expensive.

You also have to be ready to adapt. Archz was in a perfect position to flatten my capital last night when I was beating on Grishnag and Hugman in the west, it was virtually undefended, but you failed to seize the opportunity!

I still have a few game terms I need to catch up on, I don't really know the civic stuff and espionage is something I don't understand yet. Maybe Tyler can point us to a good resource on the game?

Anyway, thanks for a fun game last night.

I'd like to point out a few problems in our games.

a) play single player you fucks, I'm not good at civ and I don't really understand what's happening all the time, but things like automating exploration and workers really do speed the game up.

b) 120 turns is way too short for the game to actually get interesting

c) inland sea... there is a huge problem in distances with this map, to attack my next neighbor (Grishnag) at the start of the game, I had to send my warriors and archers 12 turns away, that's 10% of the game. Even if I wanted to thwart Tyler, I simply could never touch him due to distances.

d) this is directly related to the distance problem, with the game mode on quick, the risk of armies being outdated once they actually reach their location is huge.

Suggestions:

Set speed to normal, to slow down tech rushes and increase the efficient lifetime of a unit.

Play longer games, we need to pre-agree on the time we'll play and stick to it. I think a full game should be fine when we actually get one going.

Could we try a Pangea map instead of inland sea? It's technically quite similar but it eliminates the biggest distance problems (Pangea is a giant continent for everyone map for those who don't know).

Regarding the backstabbing, ganging up problem... all you have to do is make sure it's not feasible to attack you! It's your own problem if people are ganging up on you.

Post by: Tyler on April 30, 2010, 02:51:20 pm
I really enjoyed the game last night. It is good to know we can do a 120 turn game in 3 or 4 hours. I do think that using the CTON rules would be best of these sorts of games though. People don't really want to play after they ahve lost two cites anyway...

A 400 turn, normal speed "ironman" game would be fun to do though. We can maybe set that one up and play that when everyone is online. If not play a shorter one.

Lets try pangea then, it will be even more aggressive and increase the chance of people ganging up, but as you say it will allow everone the chance to react to a run-away leader.

Here is a decent FAQ for you newbies http://www.civfanatics.com/civ4/faq. One of the key things that people need to learn is that it takes aprox a 2:1 advantage for an attacker to take a city. So if you defend with 2 units an attacker will probably need to send at least 4. This is modified by technology of course, "you dont want to bring a sword to a gunfight".

Pro tip for Cwave:

Having taken ages to do your turn, being the last to do so, with only a few hours left; it is wise to then (when the turn starts anew) take your next turn straight away! This would seem an obvious move, yet you seemed to fail at it? Unless of course your last turn you failed to actually do in time?:o

So, since everyone was on-line except Arches last night >:(, we couldn't get any turns done.

So lets do it same time as last week, 4pm (server time) on Saturday.

Then we can run out 40 turns or so, and really get this game started.

So, since everyone was on-line except Arches last night >:(, we couldn't get any turns done.

So lets do it same time as last week, 4pm (server time) on Saturday.

Then we can run out 40 turns or so, and really get this game started.

I'm doing an extra shift @work from 6pm servertime to midnight, so I need to leave around 17:30 ST.

Should be enough for a few turns though.

Good times today, we're getting to a point where it starts being interesting.

Cwave and I had a little war, but we're BFF now. I don't like Tyler's dominance... if we only had an aggressive player next to him willing to sacrifice to take him down...

Anyway, things keep getting better, looking forward to the weeks to come.

I am going out now, but should be back in the evening sometime... 8pm'ish?

Tonight is good for me.

I have a feeling I'm going to regret my wonder spam. It has inflated my score and attracted the evil gaze of Palmar. Just like the Greeks and the Romans all over again...

I can play tonight, but around 21-22ST is better for me. I can however show up earlier if everyone confirms, just don't want to be stuck waiting on someone at 18:00 my time.

Yes, I am not losing anything yet, but Tyler's powerful economy is chugging out units at a faster rate than I can keep up with. I need support, if we want to prevent him from pulling ahead.

Well, if anyone needs some jungle wood... to hide behind or something... I can help out with the war effort.

Otherwise, I will battle him WITH CULTURE!

The truth will out!

P.S. I also need stone. Will trade for jungle wood, or dye (yes, dye. I have tons of dye.)

maybe not so long.

Hard drive crashed... suddenly. No idea what happened really, it was just idle and I was browsing and the computer rebooted itself, I can't boot windows nor the linux partition.

All I get is a "Disc read error"

I have the day off on thursday, so I'll attempt a recovery then, and next time I'll write a script or something to automatically back-up the files weekly or so.

Meh...

Sorry, we're out at least until thursday, perhaps longer.
Sorry, at least

The game is back up and running. Shouldn't have lost anything, other than your current turn.

I've updated the DNS to point to Kesh, who is now running the server, but if your cache hasn't updated, use: ttam.kicks-ass.net

civ.iron-edge.co.uk will work within a day or two.

I currently *do not* have hamachi setup. It's running on a nix box.  If you are having any issues, please shout at me in IRC so I can lau... help u fix it.

Also, you have about 4.5 hours from now to take your next turn.  Do it before the raid, or you wont have long after :)

HOLY CRAP!

I have just seen what civics Tyler has:

Representation
Nationhood
Free Religion
Slavery

So he's a Communist state, that practices slavery, while allowing the people to elect their rulers and be of any faith.

We are totally fucked....

Anyone up for a session tonight or tomorrow?

We should probably think about starting a new game. I am quite far ahead in our current one. I will get rifling in 20 turns or so, and im not sure if any of you will be able to get gunpowder by then.
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: delling on May 14, 2010, 12:52:53 pm
I will have astronomy and gunpowder in about 10 turns... but there are only two real ways this can play out:

a) you leave me alone and I settle the New World. You wipe out the rest of the map. We fight over the New World while everyone else waits for us to finish.

b) you use this new-found knowledge and simply wipe me out in the next 10-15 turns

Either way, probably better to start a new game :)
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Tyler on May 14, 2010, 01:07:00 pm
Gunpowder will probably not be enough to save you. You will need rifling to do that.

Gunpowder would give access to the pinch promotion however, which could slow me down a little. With that it would be possible to defend a city with (a lot of) musket men against riflemen.

However it would be all but impossible to stop invading rifilemen from pillaging all the land outside the cities with just musketmen. And when I get steal, in about 20 turns after riflemen, the cannons will make short work of even cities.

So yeah, a new game I think.
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Archz on May 14, 2010, 01:10:38 pm
We should have bigger maps as well. I felt that it was really crowded very early in the game

So

How do we tackle tech-runners?

Basically, everyone except myself plays very passively, so spamming technology is very beneficial, but usually whoever gets slightly ahead only gets farther ahead as the game goes on, since technology and advantage leads to more technology and advantage, I was the only one who even bothered to try and stop Tyler.

One way would be to allow tech-trading, but it opens up different problems... I'm honestly not sure....
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Hugman on May 14, 2010, 01:42:36 pm
Really? a new game already?  >:(

That means I suppose we have to get Sint, Killi and Grilly in. That's gonna make it more fun, but makes getting every one taking a turn, and having turn sessions, like twice as hard.

Sigh.

Anyway the annoying news is, i'm out tonight, and working from 10am-4pm (uk time) tommorrow. So unless anything changes I can't make sat afternoon.

If we do make a new game, lets arrange it for sometime on sunday afternoon? That gives us time to see if the new fodder are actually up to seriously playing it?
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Cwave on May 14, 2010, 01:48:48 pm

And we cant do 10 man :\ That means we will never ever get sessions done.

When you are surrounded by jungle, lose your second worker AND have only one hill within range of your capital... a NAP is a good idea.

We don't all frickin' live in beautiful, prosperous, resource-rich Shangri-La, Cwave :P
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Tyler on May 14, 2010, 02:43:50 pm
Archz: the "terra" type of map does mean we are a bit cramped on the initail continent. For other map types the size would have been fine.

Palmar: The problem was I was allowed to get too far ahead. As you say at least 3 other people should have attacked at the same time as you. Even with no metal 4 stacks of 10 archers could have done a lot of pillaging of my land. Then again you should probably have waited until you had metal hooked and had co-ordinated with the others before attacking.

Cwave: you can't blame grish the newbie for the fail. He just made peace with a powerful neibour. You were in a much better possition to attack, as i couldn't realiate against you at all. Even if you couldn't take a city you could have done some damage to my land.

Tech trading: My problem with this is makes the game flat. The fun part of civ is picking a tech "strand" to go down. If we trade then allies just pick differenct strands and everyone gets everything. You just need to stop anyone getting too far ahead...
Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Cwave on May 14, 2010, 02:49:49 pm
True true, but still you are about 40+ clicks away from my land.
Leaving me very far away to launch any attack since i dont have horses.

And to add to it, i have palmar next to me so i have to leave an army @ home cause he can't be trusted ever :P

Next game, i try and murder you from the start, i promise :)
And ill try and be more agressive like Palmar stated.

Title: Re: Civilization 4 - Empire building 101
Post by: Tyler on May 14, 2010, 03:44:54 pm
Palmar i'm happy to play on normal speed but I don't think it would have as much impact as you think, because it also takes longer to build the units. The only thing it saves on is travel time. I don't think the game speed would have made any difference to our last game.

If you really want to make war more attractive we should set the city elimination limit to 2 (or maybe 3). This will give people far more incentive to attack.

So change of plans, i will be off work from about 1pm (uk time), and can do a civ sesson this afternoon.

SO CAN WE MAKE THIS HAPPEN OR WHAT?

Also, are we going to make a new game? and are we allowing the other nubs to join?

Someone just needs to make a decision on this.
