Title: Corsair h50 liquid cooling
Post by: shankski on July 14, 2010, 02:24:31 pm
After a few issues with a previous heatsink i decided to buy the Corsair h50 liquid cooling system. Cost about £60 with P&P, which isnt too bad considering top heatsinks sell for that much.

I installed pretty easily only thing was i had to remove the bracket that came with the mobo, not hard just took a while longer.

Did some temperature tests in BFBC2
With my old cooler (Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 pro) idle was around 37-42 degrees C idle(depending on room temperature). After an hour session of BF it would reach about 75 degrees C max. Pretty worrying which is why i decided to get a new cooler =p

With the h50 idle temps were 28-30 degrees C. After BF it reached 44 degrees C max.

So overall really pleased with this cooler. Gave me peace of mind knowing that my core temps were nowhere near the maximum for my processor.

Would recommend to anyone who is having troubles with this god damn summer heat

That's good and all, but... unless you're going to overclock, water cooling isn't worth the hassle.

Your CPU is quite safe at 75C, I assure you.

Over 100 is worrying for most Processors and GPUs, 75 not so much.

I actually looked up what my e8400 was rated to.  90 degrees is it's limit, apparently.  My gfx card is rated to 110!  Though I start getting some weirdness happen over 105ish.

i was planning to OC but i didnt want to with the heatsink i had, but now i can!

according to AMD the maximum temp for my processor was 65C which did seem a little low to me

Woah... that's very low!

OK, water cooling FTW!

yeah, liquid cooling is great for temps, at the cost of increased hassle in the first place. Well worth it if you can be bothered and know how to do it safely etc etc.

If you're after air cooling for an i7, http://www.scan.co.uk/Product.aspx?WebProductID=892512 one of these huge monstrosities with two 120mm fans strapped to it is a good bet if you have a nice big well-cooled case for it and neat cables.

But wow, what ludicrously low max temps on those AMD things, had no idea. Definitely seems that water cooling would be the more prudent option there...

Apparently it's to do with where the sensor is.  AMDs have them outside of the chip, on the motherboard, whereas Intel ones are actually on the cores.  Or some such.

Same kit as I use, pretty nifty. Recommend to scrub down the pre-applied paste and smack on some arctic silver/noctua paste. Drops temps by another 5ish degrees. Cool and quiet ftw.
