It looks pretty awesome. Apparently some spiders and skeletons spawn at night to try to kill you (can also spawn during day at dark places).

I think I'll grab it this weekend, it's cheap, and looks like it could be very very entertaining.

WTB multiplayer option
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Hugman on September 16, 2010, 01:33:13 pm
From what I saw on youtube, multiplayer consists of half of the people creating wonderful artistic buildings, castles and houses(including rollercosters); and the other half setting them on fire, and putting out the light sources out inside them (so spiders spawn inside), while spamming retarded shit in the chat channel.

Its, its like the Barrens all over again! 8)

They have a java based (I think) version of the game that is free to play on their website, in browser.. You can find it on minecraft.net
A lot of fun imo! I dug a tunnel as far down as I could and mined lots of rare materials.. not sure what to do with them, though!
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Skymunken on September 17, 2010, 11:34:05 am
The java based free game on the site has no features at all though :( You can just run around and throw down cubes.
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Grilldyret on September 17, 2010, 11:37:12 am
Ah yes, that is correct.. that ruins about 80% of the game :P
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Ahkailon on September 17, 2010, 11:52:49 am
I watched a shitload of videos on youtube about this game yesterday, and I tried the free version, and I would buy it in a heartbeat if it weren't for the fact that it will get me horribly addicted and I'll forget I have schoolwork at all  :-\.

(I had tons of fun just building a staircase to the bottom of the world, making a gold-ore roof, and was about to start building a tower when I had to pull myself together and go to sleep  :'( )
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Palmar on September 17, 2010, 11:59:34 am
there is a pirated copy of the game available.

I tried it, it's quite fun. The first thing I did was trying to die, which I did successfully. I need to play around a bit more.

not a torrent so shouldn't be blocked

played the java browser version last night, spent ages just making some cool houses. But as its only placing and removing blocks it did get pretty boring towards the end

Yeah, I stole it yesterday and played frantically for hours.. I'm too afraid to leave my solid brick cave house at night though, in fear of meeting SQUARE ZOMBIES or SQUARE SPIDERS. I have a diamond sword though, so I'm probably invincible.

Used the Minecraft wiki (http://minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page) a lot to see crafting recipes.. Wish they expanded the craftable system even further! Like REDSTONE WEAPONS!

Did you copy the game files into /user/appdata/roaming/.minecraft ? Also, pretty sure it was a .jar file (no idea if there's a difference)
Will check when I get home if you haven't gotten help by then :P

Basically, all the info is in the #README file.. and there's even a picture that explains what to do in detail :P

Started playing this few days ago, game is fun, but,  I had more fun watching this series of video:

It has ~40 videos, it's more about adventuring and exploring, building is just a side thing for him
Also, one of his RL friends has complete opposite play style, he builds some nice huge things. And considering it's survival mode, he has to collect all resources, etc. He's dedicated to the 'cause', so I expect more huge structures from him

First time I found diamond veins, I stopped what I was doing and immediately mined them. It was a few mins after before I checked my inventory, and realised the diamonds wasn't there. I checked minecraft.wiki and found that diamonds can only be mined with a iron or better pickaxe, and I had used a stone one, and effectively thrown away the rarest mineral in the game! >:(

P.S. Where is the fraps!

It worked perfectly until I closed it, then this happens. It tries to update and I can't get the option to play offline again. Halp?

Yeah there was an update. Unfortunately the cracked version doesn't allow this. Load the game up, but don't do anything yet! Disconnect your LAN cable (or whatever to stop your PC having access to the internet) then click login, it will say it couldn't connect or something and give you the option to click "play offline". Once your in the offline mode you can reconnect your internet and as long as you don't close the game you won't have to repeat the process.

I had the same problem as Goz. Did what you said, but after the "play offline" option, even when disconnected from the net, it goes to a "updating minecraft" screen, which shows a loading bar at 90% and has "done loading" (despite the fact its at 90%) and doesn't progress from there.

Suggestions?

Oh yeah I forgot! If your game has tried to update before doing this method you will need to delete the contents of the .minecraft folder (don't delete your saves!) and recopy the .minecraft folder from the .rar

They announced that it will be free for play during this week due to some shit, but when their shit is sorted out your accounts will be deleted and you will have to pay for it again.

I tried to make an account last night but apparently I was not the only one who knew about this and their server crashed or something.

Start of my castle! :)  Seriously unfinished, but getting there.   A little cliché, I know, but meh!

That'll be one of the corner towers, gonna add walls joining them, a surrounding defensive wall, moat... and so on.
Title: Re: Minecraft
Post by: Illusion on September 22, 2010, 12:07:13 pm
Nice start there, and those comics were quite funny.

I must say I'm quite surprised how much Minecraft has blown out of proportion. It's crazy! Youtube is full of videos and theres so many websites dedicated to it, and it's strange because at first glance it doesn't look like the game would be that great.

But... Then you play for a bit, doesn't even have to be that long just enough to start making your first few items or your first shelter and then it is a struggle to stop the game.

I've had to restart my game unfortunately because being on a snow level finally started to bug me to no end and I couldn't take it anymore. It really got annoying and damaging to my shovels to have to dig through the snow and then the ground each time and get your inventory filled with stupid snowballs that for some reason only stack in packs of 16.
