Title: The "Ultimate" Intelligence Test
Post by: Narco on October 27, 2010, 08:57:16 pm
Found a link on New Scientist's website, apparently a group of scientists have conducted the ULTIMATE intelligence test. (http://www.newscientist.com/article/dn19592-take-the-ultimate-intelligence-test.html?DCMP=OTC-rss&nsref=online-news)

While I am a bit dubious about how "ultimate" it is, it's certainly very in depth, even gives colourful normal distribution curves for you.

So here it is ladies and gents:
http://cbstrials.com/Open/Default.aspx?B_ID=279

Will certainly be interesting to see what everyone gets, I'll start off (No cheating guys):

1. Visuospatial Working Memory Strategy: 8.0 (top 37% of population)
2. Verbal Reasoning: 15.0 (top 44%)
3. Focused Attention: 50.0 (top 6%)
4. Deductive Reasoning: 11.0 (top 40%)
5. Working Memory: 6.0 (top 41%)
6. Mental Rotation: 67.0 (top 67%)
7. Visual Attention: 147.0 (top 25%)
8. Verbal Working Memory 9.0 (top 14%) EDIT: Finally got this one working
9. Planning: 19.0 (top 59%)
10. Paired Associates: 5.0 (top 50%)
11. Visuospatial Processing: 96.0 (top 3%)
12. Spatial Working Memory: 6.0 (top 59%)

If you do the test the headings will probably make more sense. Also, as the results from the population result in a normal distribution I think its fair to say 50% is average.

Sounds fucking amazing, will check this out and post results etc...

I was too tired when I did this :)

And I think most of the tests are bit too easy to practice. You have to get the hang of a lot of them, so Im sure you would be a lot more intelligent on the second try.

1. Visuospatial Working Memory Strategy: 7.0 (top 63% of population)
2. Verbal Reasoning: 16.0 (top 37%)
3. Focused Attention: 37.0 (top 22%)
4. Deductive Reasoning: 14.0 (top 18%)
5. Working Memory: 7.0 (top 17%)
6. Mental Rotation: 60.0 (top 73%)
7. Visual Attention: 139.0 (top 32%)
8. Verbal Working Memory  6 (top 68%)
9. Planning: 47.0 (top 3%)
10. Paired Associates: 4.0 (top 70%)
11. Visuospatial Processing: 63.0 (top 27%)(wasnt wearing glasses)
12. Spatial Working Memory: 8.0 (top 34%)

1. Visuospatial Working Memory Strategy: 7.0 (top 63% of population)
2. Verbal Reasoning: 13.0 (top 56%)
3. Focused Attention: 44.0 (top 11%)
4. Deductive Reasoning: 11.0 (top 40%)
5. Working Memory: 7.0 (top 17%)
6. Mental Rotation: 98.0 (top 38%)
7. Visual Attention: 156.0 (top 18%)
8. Verbal Working Memory: 6.0 (top 68%)
9. Planning: 18.0 (top 63%)
10. Paired Associates: 6.0 (top 30%)
11. Visuospatial Processing: 83.0 (top 9%)
12. Spatial Working Memory: 8.0 (top 34%)

If calculated correctly, giving me an average of top 37,25%. Not bad I'd say.

the depressing conclusion for me is that im getting old, my short time memory quite obviously suck -.-

Grax -- I have issues with my short-term memory too, but I attribute it to the sheer volume of information that I parse :)

It's got to the stage where I will read a figure, alt-tab to type it down, and I've forgotten the number...

I'll take the test tomorrow!

Welp

I blame odd sleeping patten ;) Seriously though, hope they release the demographics info they gather from these after they hit a good enough sample size, could be interesting reading going from the questionaire contents afterwards.

1. Visuospatial Working Memory Strategy: 7.5 (top 37% of population)
2. Verbal Reasoning: 14.0 (top 1%)
3. Focused Attention: 29.0 (top 40%)
4. Deductive Reasoning: 13.0 (top 24%)

10. Paired Associates: 6.0 (top 30%)
11. Visuospatial Processing: 85.0 (top 8%)
12. Spatial Working Memory: 10.0 (top 14%)

Really is the kinda stuff you'll excel at if you play brain training games.. reminded me of playing it on the DS quite a bit.

*btw, did anyone else get a bit annoyed at the non-standard behaviour of the clickable options on the red/green test? e.g. it was accepting input on mousedown rather than mouseup... ye olde tenative-hold-down-click-while-thinking boned me a couple of times there. Not to make excuses or anything.

Silly stupid intelligence tests. I'm especially not convinced by simple memory exercises like 5 (blinking cubes), 8 (numbers), 10 (Pairs). Especially 5 seemed to be very prone to getting "good sequences" one can remember with memory hooks.

Anyone had a bug with 9? Didn't seem to accept the solution in the very first one.

Does anyone else see the irony in Grilly getting -2.0 for focused attention because he didn't pay attention to what he was supposed to do?
Title: Re: The "Ultimate" Intelligence Test

This test can't be ultimate at all. The real problem of intelligence measurement is conceptualization of intelligence not measuring tools. Although all the measuring tools are best possible ones for the specific working memory tasks and separate from learned knowledge and relatively from culture. There is some evidence of correlation between Working memory and intelligence (afaik IQ) but IQ is a flawed concept anyway. It correlates best with your highschool grades. Also working memory can be improved easily, which kinda undermines its connection with intelligence, one of the subjects almost doubled the amount he can hold in an experiment done in my school. Also all of the tests involve novel information, things that are not related to knowledge. But all of the things we learn in real life involve some form of former knowledge and require you to connect them to each other so probably this test will not be successful in capturing that important element. So people who got low scores shouldbe sad : )
But it definately looks like a better alternative to IQ tests.

You do realise that remembering a series of numbers (24 numbers in a row, in your case) is a completely different skill to being able to manipulate numbers in a mathematical sense, right?
