This is an experiment, if around 12+ people sign up I will go through with this
THIS GAME REQUIRES YOU TO READ/POST ON THE FORUMS DAILY, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!
Mafia is a popular forum game. The game is quite simple. You have two factions, the town and the mafia. Each aims to kill the other faction. There might be a third faction that has independent goals but the came revolves about the two factions.
The game is played in Day and Night phases. Each day phase lasts 48h and each night phase lasts 24h. There is one moderator to the game, which will be me for the first game.
During the Day phase, the town sits down and dicusses the events of the night before. Remember, some amongst you are mafiosi, and will gladly lead the discussion awry. At the end of the day, the town will lynch one person and his role will be revealed.
During the night, the Mafiosi will designate a person to kill (sometimes more than one, depending on how many people are playing). One of the Mafiosi will carry out the killing. Other power roles will use their special powers at night. Cops will investigate, Trackers will track, Docs will protect and Vigilantes will shoot.
If the mafiosi outnumber the townies at any point, they will win. If the townies lynch or kill all the mafiosi they will win.
Sounds good? Let me explain the roles.
---------------------------------------------
Green roles are normal villagers with no special powers:
Villager:
You are the heart of the village. Your only weapon is your voice and your vote. You do not have any actions during the night. But it is your responsibility to lead the charge and find the Mafiosi hiding amongst you. This is the most important, yet the most underestimated role of all.
Miller:
Misunderstood by your own kind, you will not even know your own role. The Miller will think throughout the game that he is a normal townsman. But if he is checked by a cop, or lynched, he will be revealed as Mafiosi. If killed during the night, you will be revealed as Miller.
Blue roles are aligned with the Village, and have special powers. The Mafia will want to kill you at night, and you must use all your cleverness to provide information to the town, while avoiding detection from the Mafia.
Cop:
Every night you investigate someone in the village. You will then learn if he is aligned with the Mafia, or the Village. Be careful, though, as the Mafia will murder you as soon as they know your identity, and don't get fooled by a clever Framer or a Miller
Doc:
Not the most useful of Doctors, you have the power to save someone from harm at night. If a mafia comes visiting your target, the target will survive the night.
Tracker:
Ah, the Stalker of the game. Your life is all about hiding in bushes and spying on your fellow Villagers. You can select one person every night and Track them. You will learn whom they visited that night. If you track a cop, you will know who he investigated. If you track a Mafiosi, you will know that he visited someone that turns up dead the day after.
Vigilante:
Batman, once again to save the day. You will fight evil on your own terms. If the law and the council is unable to stop the rampaging Mafia, you will take matters in your own hands. One (or more... depending on game size) night you will leave your house, and you will murder a person of your own choice. Be careful, you want to murder Mafiosi, and not your fellow Villagers.
Veteran:
Tough as a nail, the Mafia doesn't simply knock on your door and kill you. Your experience in combat will allow you to survive a night of shooting by the Mafia. If they hit you again, though, you will die. If the town lynches you, you will die in first hit.
Red roles. The scum, the snakes, the rotten apples... The Mafia
Godfather:
You are the head of the Mafia, and you're considerably smarter than the rest. At the start of the game select any blue role to appear as, should the cops come and investigate. If the Mafia is divided on who shall die the next night, your vote is final.
Escort:
Enchanting smile and a little bit of revealed flesh is all it takes to distract even the hardest of workers. Every night you can distract one person, making them unable to perform their role. Distracting a doctor trying to shield a Cop? Distracting a suspecting Tracker? Your role is vital to the success of the Mafia.
Framer:
You are the greatest weapon the Mafia possesses. Every night you can Frame someone, that person will appear guilty should a cop investigate him. Clever use of Framing can lead the town into the completely wrong direction, to the point they will not be able to recover from the web of lies the Mafia has spun around them.
Mafiosi:
The brutes of the Mafia. You have no special powers aside from killing at night, should you be instructed to do so. Your job is to cause havoc in the town council and help your own team survive the lynch-happy mob.
Black roles are third party roles. Many exists, but I'll introduce only one for this first game.
Ninja:
You win the game if you are the only person left standing. You have the ability to investigate anyone during night, and twice in the game, you can kill a person at your own linking. Otherwise you have to use a clever combination of manipulation and trickery to achieve a situation where you can finish everyone off.
You will, like the Veteran, survive the first attempt at killing you, be it the vigilante, or the Mafia that tries to off you. If you get lynched, you will die nonetheless.
Ninjas are stealthy, and thus they cannot be tracked by Trackers. Trackers will not be notified that the Ninja has left his house.
----------------------------
Depending on turnout, not all roles might appear in the game. You will not know how many of each role there are, but generally the most common roles are Villagers and common Mafiosi.
The Villagers will outnumber the Mafiosi around 3-4:1 (including special roles).
A typical setup might be 8-10 villagers (5 greens, 5 blues) 4-5 mafiosi (2-3 common and 2-3 special) and 2-3 ninjas.
Sign up in this thread. At the start of Day1 I will reveal the total number of Mafiosi in the game.
Enjoy!

I'll do this.

That's 5 people signed up
We need around 12 (the more the better) to get a good game going.
-
I assume the assignment of roles is random?
-
it's random, but controlled.
I will make sure to not stack all active people on one team.
People will receive their role, along with any additional information (for example, if you're mafia you'll get list of your teammates) and perhaps some general game play tips in a private message from me, at the start of the game.
-
Im up for a trial game.
-
Me too
-
7 up
If we get 12 people before tonight I might even just start this thing at midnight.

We need 3 more for me to start a game, but I will probably wait until tomorrow night for the start
-
Sounds cool, can make tomorrow but depending on the times and days i might not be able to play
but sign me up for now
-
It's pretty clear you didn't understand it.
The game takes about 7-14 days.
You need to post at least daily.
-
well that i can do
-
Yar, sign me up too.
I will be travelling from May 16-21, though (will still have interwebs access - but don't know about timings and stuff).
Still not read the rules fully.
-
P.S. please don't lynch me.
-
Bu the way, I've played mafia games, but I've never moderated before. I have a decent idea on how to make a balanced setup, but I might not get it 100% right the first time.
Also, random events sometimes make setups in this game seem really unbalanced, when they're truly not.
-
Sign me up to! This is gonna be interesting.
-
Traveling 19th - 22nd, but I'll fill the 12th spot if noone else grabs it before midnight.
-
actually with 13 signups so far, I'm just going to start at midnight.
Sign up if you want in!

Palmar, and other Players, take a look at this:
http://www.sitesled.com/members/mikeburnfire/mafiascum04.swf
Not sure how close it is to the version Palmar is playing, but it helped clarify the rules and game for me.
This as well may be useful:
http://mikeburnfire.sitesled.com/mscumB.swf
There are many roles, but I suggest we just focus on the few that Palmar has listed (some use different names, but you can tell by the role)
Edit: Also has a useful FAQ section in the first link.

I'm always on forum and stuff, this game could be a lot of fun! Count me in!
