Title: Overrated banned
Post by: Goza on November 03, 2006, 10:27:05 am
Appararently the US horde guild Overrated (only US horde to kill Kel'thuzad) has been banned for using wallhacks to jump directly to C'Thun in AQ40.

If that's true and justified: Fools.

Edit:
Here's a video of a similar hack:

What surprises me is that this seems to work with simply modifying the level geometry on the client side. So there does not seem to be any check on the server? That would open up opportunity for tons of similar cheats, most annoying probably in battlegrounds.

Bonus DKP if you can find me that exploit...!

It took about 10 mins to find the patch-3 file used in that movie, which seems to do the same (prob just less refined and userfriendly). So, how many bonus DKP do I earn for getting Delling banned :P

Well they deserved it, but I would like to see GM-s a bit more agile when it comes to bots, some of them are "working" fow two months before they get removed (i remember a hunter bot that I reported 5 times in two months...).

Lolold ;P

Well anyway, yeah, it's not too hard to pull it off. The most used similar exploit would be the simple fire to dark portal trick.

People say blizz has a program that checks your files... But really, the easiest thing to do would be to just check your data folder when you start up wow, if its total size/file number fits with what you're supposed to have, you get to play. If it doesn't you don't.

I loll'ed. Can't believe they actually risked their accounts for making a shortcut to C'thun.

But oh well, not my account  :)

Greatly deserved.

The what? What is this trick?

You know it's trivial to pad data files with zeros etc? So actually that check wouldn't be much use. Even adding a hash check etc, it would just increase the amount of effort spent to fix your files accordingly.

Padding files with zeros is fine... until you do a CRC check on the file ;)

As I said: Even adding a hash check etc, it would just increase the amount of effort spent to fix your files accordingly. The old problem: A company vs the internet/world. There'll always be someone who has more time on his hands than you. Though they can probably make it so time consuming people stop bothering.

Or, as I said, the old-school way of doing things was to check every client action server-side...

The client would be an estimation engine, to iron out things like lag... and then the server corrects your position (which it currently does). But normally the server checks your XYZ coordinates too to make sure you're not in a bad area :P

Complete XYZ check might be too much load on the server, and client checks are probably necessary to prevent the server from extreme lag compensations which could end up with you lagging through walls.

The one where the simple camp fire gets turned into a dark portal which you can walk on... :P
