Hello, Iron Edge!
I am applying for the main raid.
Character: Varí
Armory: http://eu.battle.net/wow/en/character/Kazzak/Var%C3%AD/advanced
Class/Spec: Mage (DPS)
Member Type: raider
Personal Info:
Names Jack, 24yo Male from the UK. Graduated from Uni last year and have been working in application support since then, usually playing video games or watching through TV series in my spare time. Played WoW pretty much since release, being a young 12 year old at the time. Just came back to playing after a 3 year break due to not really being able to play during last 2 years of university and spent a year travelling round Australia. Just looking to come back now and find a decent guild to finish content with now and move on into legion.
Class/Spec:
Usually prefer it when fires the main PvE spec but enjoy playing any of the specs and will play whatever's best for the expansion/tier/fight.
Arcane - 723 - Appreciate I’m behind with only just coming back to the game but I can assure you the DPS will be there after picking up a few pieces and legendary ring. Obviously heading into legion I won’t be away for 3 years for it to be an issue again ;).
intellect > spellpower > haste till ~2100 > mastery >= haste > multistrike > crit=versatility, with the haste breakpoint being more of a guideline than a hard cap, cant really say I have that luxury at the mo ;).
Follow the basic rotation/priority for arcane. Burn Phase with CD's up with a priority on certain abilities which can change slightly depending on trinkets, Evo at 50% and then go into the conserve phase until evo's nearly back up. Change talents and what not depending on the fight. Could go into more detail with it but I'd only really be copy pasting well known information on it.
Alts:
Level 100 rogue - Always enjoyed playing rogue and always try to gear it after the mage.
Also in the process of levelling a druid here after just moving to Kazzak, like having an alt to heal/tank with. Will also definitely be levelling a demon hunter alt in legion.
Professions:
Engineering and inscription currently. Love the gadgets and what not from engineering and I used to sell glyphs in MoP and make quite a bit of gold from it. Usually swap them if any professions stand out for raiding.
Raiding Experience:
Played a priest when first started playing, can’t say I raided too much back in vanilla with being so young, Cleared ZG and did most of AQ20 and about half of molten core iirc.
Raided during BC and cleared 6/6 SSC 3/4 TK until I stopped raiding on the priest and rerolled to a mage and casually raided through BT with a few friends when it was released but mostly played PvP at the time.
Cleared all content pre ulduar in wrath, started playing casually after, mostly related to school and age at the time etc. Never experience anything else in wrath of proper raiding minus being carried through it late with friends.
Playing casually through cata 5/6 BWD Hc 3/5 BoT hc TotFW 1/2 hc FL 6/7 HC and up until Ultraxion Heroic in DS but barely playing at that point.
MoP 6/6 Hc MSV 5/6 HC HoF, until our GM joined Pwnanza and I quit playing at this point as went travelling round Australia not long after.
Came back to game after 3 years about a month ago and have only really pugged a Heroic clear a few times of HFC.
Previous Guilds:
Unqualified - Stormrage. Played more casually due to being at university through Cata, guild eventually disbanded due to core members leaving.
Pescorus - Sunstrider. Came back to play with Humpty who’s also applying to you guys ;), raided with this guild until it disbanded and stopped playing shortly after.
Availability:
Work Mon-Fri 9-5:30 UK Time, available any time outside of that barring special occasions and what not. Raid times/days are pretty great for me and where exactly what I was looking for.
Communication:
Yeah I’ve got a microphone and Ts3, happy to use them.
Computer / Connection:
Computer is - Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3570K CPU @ 3.40GHz (4 CPUs), ~3.4GHz, 8192MB RAM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 670. Spent a decent amount on it a few years ago. Don’t have any issues with it for WoW or on anything else really. Will look up at upgrading parts when need to but like I said, not had any issues running anything. On a BT fibre connection at the moment, haven’t had any problems with it.
Addons/UI:
DBM - Standard for raiding really. Hugely useful
MSBT – Prefer it to standard WoW damage text due to customisation
Quartz – same story as MSBT
Grid – prefer the much cleaner layout of it and the ease of tracking certain debuffs etc.
Bartender4 – used it for a long time, whenever I login with the standard bars now it doesn't feel right ;)
Skada- Track fight stats.
Happy to get any other add-on’s required by the guild.
UI: https://imgur.com/Sd8eq57
Used similar layout for quite a while now, looking at changing it a little at the moment, been a bit strange coming back and spells not being locked to set specs, has freed up a lot of binds.
Other Games:
Play all sorts really, Fallout, borderlands, LoL, hearthstone. Got a huge list of stuff to play that I got during steam sales but WoW’s a pretty huge time sink so don’t get round to playing them.
Why Iron Edge?
Looking for a decent 2-3 raids a week guild with the right atmosphere that can hopefully stay in for quite a while. A lot guilds I've been a part of in the past have eventually dissolved and it leads me to enjoying playing less due to losing the people I've played with for quite a while, this guild being together for so long makes it seem like it would be great guild to join.
What can I offer Iron Edge?
Competitive raider who’s enjoys the friendly competition between guildies on the meters. Not happy if I'm not pulling my weight on progress and will put in effort to be in the best position possible for raids. Happy to do whatever the guild needs to help progress and be a valuable member. I like to joke around once I've got to know people a bit, so hopefully that contributes to the positive guild atmosphere.
Where did I hear about Iron Edge?
Wowprogress
Last Words?
I appreciate the situation with me just coming back to the game and being under geared currently, especially with not having the legendary ring at the moment and also with applying with Humpty/Tom as I raided with him in the past and know he’s a great player. We’re really just looking for the right guild to be ready for legion and I'm happy to wait a few weeks or look at different solutions if my gears not acceptable at the moment.
Also happy to discuss anything in game or on Ts3.
Cheers.

As the only legitimate authority around here i can say i like what i see.
Mage has changed over the years, i also preferred fire until this current tier and the legendary ring.
Arcane is for ppl who wants to be special and frost is for ppl that have long time stable partners and a mortgage.
I like how you mentioned the 2100 haste rating point as a guideline rather than a cap. Its been the consensus for a while that it was a "cap". Which turns out to be bullshit.
Overall you seem like a promising subject for my future plans. And i would like to see you around.
-
Varí,
If there was ever a good bit of advice by me it would be, see bendiee above, try and get away from him as fast as possible, hes worked his way through more mages than i've had hot dinners, and i like my food.
Will it be too tight on time to be ready for raid as you finish work at 5:30 in an hour and 10 minutes invites are out meaning thats 1 hour 10 for food commute home and get your shit in place for raiding?
I get you want to be settled for Legion so experience right now is trivial just don't expect a raid slot until your upto 735+ i would imagine, but thats for the officers to decide on, i like the application good luck.
Regards
Vejeta

Cheers for the replies. Heh I'm hoping fire comes back for legion but I'm happy playing any of specs honestly so we’ll see how it goes.
I'm pretty lucky transport wise as it’s only a 10 minute commute for me on the train. I get back home around 6 so it gives me 40 minutes to sort food and what not which I can make work with no issues, I took that it into account when looking around for the right guild.
I fully appreciate the gear situation currently, especially with not having the legendary ring finished which is a pretty ridiculous boost. I'm happy to continue trying to pug runs/use openraid until I'm able to pick up some more gear rather than just be carried through it.
-
If "The only legitimate authority around here" likes what he sees, then I like what I see as well.
Have you checked out Humpty's thread? (http://www.iron-edge.co.uk/index.php?topic=8266.msg144035#msg144035) The same rules would apply to you.
If you're cool with that, you can poke an officer for an invite. You're gonna wanna get Exorsus Raid Tools, Angry Assignments and EPGP Lootmaster. Make sure you're up to speed on Mannoroth and Archimonde mythic.
-
frost is for ppl that have long time stable partners and a mortgage.
*Raises hand*
Be wary of bendiee he lures you on to skype and shows you things you wish to unsee. But i guess with you as the "newbie mage" now, Bendiee is all yours and I am freeeeeeeeee.

But i guess with you as the "newbie mage" now, Bendiee is all yours and I am freeeeeeeeee.
You'd think that wouldnt you.... ever heard of alternation to keep them fairly new?

Hi, Can you provide a screenshot of your UI while in combat, showing what procs you are tracking.
The current screenshot you provided shows nothing but you standing in game. This shows us you have the ability to log in and queue for LFR.
Like your paladin friend, I'd like to know your thoughts on having your Player unit dreams in the top left hand corner? Where does your target frame appear? I think this is important because the more tells you have that you are standing in fire the better. If you have to shift your gaze to the top corner, rather than a more central position on the screen, surely this can be the difference between life and death, or picking up stacks of a debuff?
If your player frame is in the top left, I'd say your target frame is probably in the top left as well. Same principal applies for switching targets. The time taken to change your focus from the centre screen to top and back again must surely affect your play? Mannoroth and Archimonde on mythic are all fights where switching targets is of the highest priority; can you afford seconds to be sure you are DPSing the correct targets?
I look forward to seeing your UI in combat, it can show a lot.
PS watch out for Vivi

Sorry I probably should have grabbed an in combat screen but just to refer you to the screenshot you provided on your app :P http://i.imgur.com/BP0qoWI.jpg?1 it looks like you did the same.
In regards to almost everything you’ve said, proc’s, unit frames, taking damage. I believe how you wish to track and display this is all down to preference. Proc’s, debuffs and any damage taken is all tracked via Mik scrolling battle text which you can customise the positioning of but I imagine most people and myself use the standard setup of having it wrapped around your character so it’s very obvious when you are taking damage/something has proc’d/You have a debuff.
I also use Extra CD which tracks things such as trinket proc’s but I just mentioned the main add-ons I used in the application as I’m looking at changing my interface at the moment and I’m trying to remove a few add-ons I’ve used previously which I don’t think I really need and have just got used to having, or perhaps can find a better add-on due to so much changing since the 3 years ago I was last seriously playing.
I actually have my target bar just above my character on the left but once again I think this is down to preference and would be perfectly fine with someone having it at the default position in the top left of the screen. I mean just watching videos to try get myself up to date with mannoroth and archimonde mythic tactics, in the paragon kill videos of this they have a DK and a druid in the videos which both have their player and target bar in the default top left position so I don’t think it affects your play and a good player can play at the highest level with whatever they feel comfortable using.
As I said I'm looking at changing my interface at the moment so I’d be more than happy to try my player frame in the middle and look at trying any suggestions yourself and anyone else would have if you think its an improvement.

I did indeed do the same. That was a mistake I made on my application.
The differences here are that I applied at a time where my gear and experience were comparable with that of the guild, I was also applying with recommendations from 2 guild members.
Since joining I have looked at a lot of applications and have learnt that a combat UI can show a lot about what the player is experiencing during a pull. Where they might be looking given timers position, their raid positioning at a point in the fight, if they are tracking buffs/debuffs, what key bindings are used (and if abilities are bound). All in all its a better idea to provide a screenshot while in combat. Looking back at it, I should have posted a combat screenshot, and if I ever apply to a guild in the future this is something I will certainly be doing.
I note you didn't actually post a screenshot of your UI while in combat.
Your UI setup is your preference of course, the game is such now that you need to track so many things, it would appear sensible to have them in your field of gaze. The standard UI has these things shown yes, but they are all over the screen in various corners. I don't know about you, but if I have to look at 3 or more different points of the screen at one time, I can't do it.
The kill videos you watched for guys raiding in Paragon, those guys raid in one of the best guilds in the world. I'm sure there are many things they can do that neither you or I can, not to that level anyway.
I'll be honest here with you Jack, your response has my heckles up. You could have just posted a screenshot of you in combat without taking a swipe at me and responding with 'you didn't do it'; its turns me off to your application. To me it gives the impression about you that you wouldn't give a straight answer if asked something.
With us only killing Mannoroth and Archimonde every week I think you are too far behind on gear and experience, particularly without the legendary ring, let alone the 20 weeks of killing Archimonde to max your ring out.
-
It's probably in response to this:
"The current screenshot you provided shows nothing but you standing in game. This shows us you have the ability to log in and queue for LFR."
Seems a little arsey to me considering he did post what was asked for. Don't know, maybe i'm sensitive or maybe something got lost in translation, heck if we were mates i'd probably laugh.
I mean, i understand we're applying to Iron Edge and we're here to prove we're not idiots but i don't understand the fascination with regard to the frames. Either decline us based on our frame position or don't. Don't see why anyone's opinion on the matter is relevant. Everything and anything that's more central is going to be easier to track but my argument is that it also makes the screen feel more cluttered.
I don't want to jeopardize our applications, or alienate myself/ourselves before we've even set foot in the guild but first impressions go both ways.
"With us only killing Mannoroth and Archimonde every week I think you are too far behind on gear and experience, particularly without the legendary ring, let alone the 20 weeks of killing Archimonde to max your ring out. "
We/he did state that we're looking toward Legion more so than HFC & that we were flexible with regard to raiding with you now or in Legion and the offer was tabled for us to join you now. Maybe it would take 20 weeks of Archi kills to max the ring but thankfully that's not the only option, but it makes sense that you would ignore this fact to support your argument.
Jack's at work and since we're a duo and i had similar questions i thought i'd stick the proverbial ore in.
-
Hi Humpty,
Good on you standing up for your mate. I like that.
With you guys applying as a duo, what happens if one of you gets benched and takes the hump, or does not for some reason get accepted?
There's 2 ways you can look at what I posted about Jack's screenshot. 1. You can take it as arsey (apologies if you took it this way, it certainly wasn't intended to be) 2. You can look at it for what it is, it shows; a player logged in and queued for LFR.
It not solely about unit frame position, at the end of the day if you stay alive or damage the correct target appropriately then that's fine, who can argue with that. I'm asking about a little thing to see what your response would be. But what's happening here is that rather than simply answering a question that's been put to you, or Jack in this case, in a manner that explains your thinking, Jack chose to send the message of 'well you didn't do it'. Now call me crazy, but I'd have thought that in an application process, if asked a question, you would just answer the question. It makes no sense to poke the person asking you something in the eye. You are trying to showcase yourself as a person and your responses are the only thing that can be used to make a judgement on that.
Opinions on the little things like unit frame position do make a difference, and are relevant because if you are standing in fire and dying, or not damaging the appropriate targets, both of which may result in a wipe and not killing the boss, or eat a combat res. That impacts not only me but every other person in the raid because it's our time. If something as simple as updating your UI, or moving things around would help, I'd much rather ask about it first than spend an evening, or two, or three working out what is going wrong.
Of course this might not solely be your responsibility but being a new player to the raid you have to understand you would be looked at sooner rather than later. The current members of the guild being tried and tested.
What happens to a raid if bosses are not being killed fast enough is that people stop enjoying it, or don't turn up. Do you see what I mean?
While I did think about mentioning the valour route, I've been typing this on my phone while trying to get on with other things at the same time, but in order to be transparent about the possibilities for maxing a legendary ring let's look at what valour can be achieved. Jack does not have the legendary yet, how many tomes does he have? On the principal of generosity let's say he has 20, more than half way, only 13 to go. Best case scenario that's 2 weeks raiding, worst case 3-5 weeks. So let's look at the valour options
Daily heroics -700
Weekly quest - 500 (Not available every week)
Mythic dungeons -2400
Highmaul & BRF LFR wings - 525
HFC LFR - 750
Total - 4875
Crystallised Fel costs 1250 each. It is possible to buy 3 per week, plus 1 from Archimonde. So to max out a ring it is possible to do this within 5 weeks. However, to fully upgrade your gear you need 8,000 valour. Let's say you don't get all of your BiS items straight away, and rather than upgrading 16 items, you need to upgrade from heroic gear to mythic, the number of valour points you need goes through the roof, 16k for the purpose of this example.
So to max the ring and gear with valour upgrades would mean collecting every single valour point from every source, Random HC, Mythic dungeons, weekly quests, all 12 LFR wings for 9 weeks. And that would be after getting the remaining tomes at an undefined number of weeks. Is it realistically possible to do this?
Now do you see why I didn't say anything about valour upgrades? Or was it just to support my argument?
This is why I feel Jack is too far behind in gear. We are not running weekly clears of mythic HFC so opportunities to get gear are restricted.
First impressions go both ways, youre correct. Apologies if I've come across in a way you don't like, that's not been my intention. Come to TS and have a chat, it's always easier to talk rather than interpret what's written on a screen.
All in all though Humpty, I was just looking for an answer to my question and a screenshot of a UI in combat, not any attitude or bad feeling in either direction.
-
Hi Humpty,
Good on you standing up for your mate. I like that.
With you guys applying as a duo, what happens if one of you gets benched and takes the hump, or does not for some reason get accepted?
Haha, I see what you did there....
-
I think this is relevant.

-
Well this went pretty interesting. I'm at work at the mo but I'll catch you on TS tonight or over the weekend.
-
Tutan, it seems this is official.
Variation, you have stated your interest is to be in for legion same as Humpty any HFC is a bonus, with people starting to grow tired im sure you will get a chance to get some drops prior to Legion if not extensively, i like both apps and i feel that battle lines where drawn between you three, maybe we should book a low budget room and let you guys thrash it out, than kiss and make up and become bff's.
As for you Tutu my tyranny on applicants has passed and times have changed, i think this is your purpose now.
Ill casually slip this in here and hope no one notices.
Good luck on the applications.

Welp, looks like I should have kept a closer eye on this thread..
Vari's gear isn't really a concern to me. And from a rational perspective, it shouldn't be anyone else's concern either. Sure, gear makes things easier, but it's not going to stand in the way of killing Archimonde if you play correctly.
Humpty's gear is a bit more of a concern, because we're relying on a certain output if you want to kill Archimonde with 3 healers. We'll have to wait and see. That's what trials are for, right? :)
The unit-frame discussion seems incredibly asinine to me. As I've said before: There is no such thing as a bad UI, just a bad player. There are loads of people who have shitty/bloated/minimalistic UI's that make it work. I was criticized just two days ago about how bloated my UI looks, in part because the person on the other side of the discussion didn't even know what kind of shit a raid leader might need in his UI. If someone is playing like shit, I don't care if the UI is to blame. Again, this is why we have a trial.
I'm looking forward to trying you guys out in a raid setting, so you can prove these guys wrong by just doing your fucking job. :)
