So, I have been thinking for a while about this thing as I run the profession forums.. Allakhazam seems to update with new items slowly, which results in grey item links. Take my 2.4 update, for instance. Wowhead has had the items for weeks and weeks afaik.
Now, I checked out the wowhead site, and it seems they have an item link code just like allakhazam. It doesn't look as nice, as the item names are not written in bold, but it's a much quicker update, and it has the same feature with image-on-hover and such. Only real change is that you will be redirected to the wowhead page if you click the link now.
Do you have access to the site script, dell? If so, you can add this: <script src="http://www.wowhead.com/widgets/power.js"></script> anywhere in the script. (considering it is actually wanted)

i only use wowhead these days. dunno about anybody else but its just so better structured and friendly

You also got the new page; www.wowdb.com, driven by curse if Im not mistaking, good site, dunno if you can use it the way you use allakhazam or wowhead on the pages tho.

I'm more than happy to add the JS file to the header of the site, if you really prefer the Wowhead links.

Well, it's really not that big a deal, only thing is that the item links will start working 2-3 or more weeks after the items have been added, usually.
Not sure how much it will HELP, but it'll look nicer without the grey links! :)

Oki, well, it doesn't automatically change the text when you link it, so it's going to be pretty painful...
You have to make the link, and the item name. Not quite as easy as [wowitem] imo.
If you want to use wowhead though, tell me and I will set up some classes so you can do colours and stuff with class="blah" in the links.

Oh, it seems the wowhead item links import data from allakhazam and simply slap on a black border. At least I\m getting the "Allakhazam might be blabla" when I hover over a malfunctioning link.. Still, I liked the black borders better, allows for white items and such being linked in the white forum theme!

Ok, think that's the best I can do for the moment. It's easy to make it so any link to db.mmo-champion.com turns into a tooltip -- but it's harder to make it so that you can just type in an item ID and have it magically turned into a color-coded link.
I can probably do it, but... it's a bit of hacking. Also, the site for the forum mod that I use is broken atm.

'i' here means 'item', 's' means spell... if you look at the items on http://db.mmo-champion.com you will quickly work it out. You can use the full link too, like: /s/74565/summon-tree (but make sure there isn't a slash at the end -- that will break it.
