Title: New forum design
Post by: delling on October 31, 2010, 06:47:58 pm
Heya!

I rolled out some changes to the forum this afternoon. We're now on the latest version of SMF, and we have an add-on called 'Tinyportal'.

Tinyportal adds the boxes you see on the right, and also the RSS box at the top.

It's obviously very rusty at the moment (RSS shouldn't display on every page!), but hopefully it looks OK!

Anyway, if there are features that you'd like, or things moved around, or bugs fixed... now's the time to tell me.

Looks really nice and well constructed!

Do miss an awesome banner though. It gave the site a unique 'Iron Edge' look tbh.

I like it a lot!

Pretty sweet, but is there a way make the shoutbox bigger, either in general or as user preference? Only seeing the last 1-2 shouts is annoying.

Or mabye just show
Name: bla bla
bla bla

Remove avatars from the shoutbox, it takes up so much space!
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Cojche on October 31, 2010, 07:28:51 pm
Wtf Yoica, i can see last 5 it's even written "last 5 shouts" And u can always open latest 50 if u want. :D I don't see problems with it.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Daekesh on October 31, 2010, 07:30:15 pm
Shoutbox posts need to take up far less room... should be able to read them without having to scroll the window...
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Gaeios(Graxlos) on October 31, 2010, 07:31:09 pm
I havent found a function to disable avatars.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on October 31, 2010, 07:40:05 pm
Yeah, doesn't seem to be an easy way to disable avatars.

And who cares. It's a shoutbox. Click 'show 50 latest' if you REALLY want more shoutbox action...

re: the banner -- yeah, it won't be empty like that for ever.

I'm not sure how big I want the top of the page to be. If we get sponsors, we need space up there. If someone comes up with a cool graphic thing (Archz and Devlin are working on stuff?), then that can go up there.

I don't really want 200-400 pixels of BANNER though.

Devlin is probably more skilled than me, I uploaded the raw photoshop file if he wants to use some of the figures :D

(Devlin poke me if you want to work together on it! :D)

Playing around with the layers, and made the text a bit more dominant

THAT second line under iron edge is barely readable and it looks even more cluttered now than it was before

I kinda miss quick reply... :-\

Then again, one extra click doesn't hurt too much.

Oh and also, names with special symbols are screwed.

Wtf Yoica, i can see last 5 it's even written "last 5 shouts" And u can always open latest 50 if u want. :D I don't see problems with it.

I can see 5 with scrolling, but only 1 is actually visible. It would be fine if just 4-5 are visible.

no offence here, but i think it looks horrible and chaotic

not sure with the brownish layer and the abundance of c4d messyish

try making it look clean and neat! (text is hardly readable aswell)

other than that, im loving the new forum design :)
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 01, 2010, 12:26:40 am
The banner would have to be long and thin.

That means you have lots of width for various characters... spanning some kind of landscape.

It has to be clean, not muddy. Red, white, blue... and so on.

I will investigate the character encoding.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 01, 2010, 12:33:17 am
No idea what's happened to the extended character set... in theory nothing's changed... but I can't create the ? (i-umlaut) that's meant to go at the end of Yathezai's name.

Also delling, i'm not sure if this is a problem for anyone else but "unread posts since last visit" doesnt seem to be working for me, although new posts are defonatly there as i can see them in the "recent" box.

Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Grilldyret on November 01, 2010, 10:12:53 am
Loving the banners! top one has a very WoW-ish feeling to it though, think it's the blurry colors and the thistle stuff in the background.. not that there's anything wrong with that!
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Rash on November 01, 2010, 11:03:23 am
I like the green one! but I've already been told it wont happen if its not red :D
Title: Re: New forum design

The green one has my vote as well, but the red one is cool too
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Daekesh on November 01, 2010, 11:22:00 am
Could you try the top one, but without the characters made brown? (Like the first one with that background...)
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Yathezai on November 01, 2010, 11:31:32 am
I love the brown one! Only thing that would make it better would be a different font for "Online gaming community". :)
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Goza on November 01, 2010, 01:05:56 pm
In Opera, wide pictures in posts don't get a scrollbar like they do in Firefox. Thus the "post section" gets widened and overlaps with the RSS/Recent/Shoutbox slice.

Bugpics attached.

Can i adjust the width of the site somewhere.... It's too big for this standard non widescreen company screen :\
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Daekesh on November 01, 2010, 02:04:40 pm
Can you move the shoutbox higher up in the side panel? it's pretty useless if u can't see it properly without scrolling!
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 01, 2010, 02:08:27 pm
Jesus, you use 1024*768, Cwave?

I like the first one, Archz.

Also, we can always have a rotating banner that changes every page load...

We have quite a few artists -- there's no reason we should just choose ONE banner when we have a few good ones to choose from :)

The forum is meant to auto-scale images that are over X width, but I will look into it.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Cwave on November 01, 2010, 02:24:13 pm
#wrapper {
   margin: 0 auto;
   position: relative;
   width: 1150px;
}

Can you set that one in the css to 1024? Me and my company screen would love you longtime!!! <3
Title: Re: New forum design

i bet you use a CRT monitor and windows ME
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 01, 2010, 02:31:41 pm
I can't honestly believe you're using a 14-15" LCD with 1024px max width. That's like... seriously ghetto.

It doesn't work at 1024 unless I remove the side boxes.

You can remove them yourself (see the '-' in the top right corner), but then the forum just expands to the full width...

How beautifully symbolic, Palmar.

I've now added a 'narrow' theme to the forum, if you're using a monitor or 1MB graphics card from 1994. You can change it in Profile > Change Look/Layout, then select 'narrow' from the list of themes (down the bottom).
Title: Re: New forum design

I've switched to narrow, I like it better.

the narrow theme is missing the recent posts from the info center at the bottom. They seem to work okay in the sidebar.

Performed some maintenance -- most of all, I moved the forum down to www.iron-edge.co.uk

The old 'forum-new' URL is now deprecated (it will forward to the new URL)

Old homepage is still at 'xoops', but I will try to move the photos, movies and news articles over to this forum.

If you find anything that's broken, lemme know.

Why do you need to make a thread about a link that's at the top of every page? :)
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 13, 2010, 04:14:34 pm
Okay... moved a lot of threads and boards around.

You will find that we now have an SC2 category, and HON and Civilization now have their own boards under the Other Games category.

Moved the WoW boards out into their own category. Iron Edge category is now a general category for everything about the guild.

Take a look at the main index of the forum and find your favourite boards. They're all still there, they might just be in a different place.

I also retired a few boards that no one had used in a while (Wipe Squad, Roster Support, 'TBC discussion').

Any problems/questions, post 'em here.

Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Yathezai on November 13, 2010, 05:25:46 pm
Looks better, even though it'll take some days to adjust.

Things I noticed;

- "Events" forum hasn't been used for more than a year, also time to retire?
- The classes subforums are in reversed alphabetical order...for what it's worth.
- And something that's been around for ages, also a tiny thing, "(Upcoming) birthday" in the calendar is a terrible color on the eye, you can barely read it.
- Edit; and something else, maybe it's an idea to create two subforums in the PvP forum, one for Arena, one for (Rated) BG's.
Title: Re: New forum design

Yeah, more PVP boards coming I think.

Events are staying, as we'll likely be using the calendar more.

Yathezai -- how about you actually provide some links to show the problem?
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Yathezai on November 14, 2010, 02:00:49 pm
Hmm, excuse me, it's not actually fucking up links, it's something the Armory does automatically when you copy-paste a name with special symbols. As long as you don't type the Armory link it'll be changed to a working link.

For example:

http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dunemaul&cn=Yatheza[i with two dots], doesn't work.
http://eu.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Dunemaul&cn=Yatheza%C3%AF, works.

Anyway...I'm still having this (Firefox):

(http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9816/symbols.jpg) (http://img403.imageshack.us/i/symbols.jpg/)

So it's not really a problem, more something that looks silly. Maybe it's just my ignorance about internet coding, you're all way better at that stuff! :P
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 15, 2010, 12:32:28 am
Yeah, it's character encoding. I tried to move the site over to UTF-8, which would allow for all those funky characters, but I ended up breaking the site.

I will try again at some stage... I just don't know when :)

I think it's a good reminder to stop making characters with stupid characters in their name in order to get your favourite game/film/etc character's name. It's mildly better than, say, xsepirothx, but only just.

Wasn't worth making a new post for, so I'll just necro this thread.

What about some more games in the 'other games' forum?

I personally play a lot of League of Legends lately, would be nice to set up some games, as HoN is just retarded these days. And perhaps some COD:BO as some seem to be playing that.

A minor suggestion.

Why is hon retarded?

Perhaps we should just have a place where you can make petitions for new games, and if you get more than a certain amount of people agreeing we make a new subforum.

At first, WoW was too easy for him as the greatest protadin in the world. Now the situation is repeated with HoN. It seems almost no game can match his mighty ability.

I'm so mighty. No, there are just too many retarded players on HoN imo. "You suck, I won't help you". Blaming things on you, when it's actually there fault for towerdiving at level 1 for example. It's only fun playing with 10 friends :)

Maybe if you didn't suck they'd help you, like they said. I think it's fair.

Well, it's just how I feel about it. I'm not a pro, and I never claimed I was. But anyway, it was about having more games on the forums to organize leagues or teamgames. Or just to know who else is playing certain games.

Make a petition then Inphy, if people agree with you there will be a LoL board.

But it wouldnt make sense making a board for every game in the world.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on November 21, 2010, 09:04:43 pm
Yep. If a game doesn't have its own board, just use the Other Games general discussion board. Make a new topic. If enough LoL topics pop up... new board!

If you haven't noticed yet, we now have some kind of Ciao shopping thing on the side of the forum.

It's not dynamic. It doesn't use cookies. It will always list just those three product categories. It just links through to Ciao (which is a product review/comparison site). It's actually quite a good site!

If you're wondering _why_ it's there: it brings in enough money to pay for the IE server! Hooray.

Really? But it's games and consoles... dunno how a smartphone would appear there.

But yeah, purely coincidence :)

Does anyone actually use the WoW.com/MMO-Champion block in the top right corner of the site?

Do you look at it, but not click through?

Do you regularly click through? On a daily basis?

I miss seeing from what site each link is from. Like, I personally don't read wow.com so I'm only interested in mmo-champion links, but it's not always easy to tell which is which.
Title: Re: New forum design

Never used the new box. The previous RSS feed had better content IMO, WoW Insider is uninteresting.

I'd prefer a single link to MMO Champ, maybe with their current topic headline.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Kawe / Dave on February 12, 2011, 02:51:41 pm
The top right mmo champ box is pretty much the only way I ever navigate to their site.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Skymunken on February 12, 2011, 03:03:57 pm
I usually just see the links from Irony on irc. Other than that I have RSS feed to MMOC going.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Starbrow on February 12, 2011, 10:51:34 pm
I also just prefer the MMO-champion site, so not being able to immediately tell if a link is from them or not is a feature that I miss. I never go to their site directly either.
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: delling on February 12, 2011, 11:06:43 pm
(It has the exact same content as before, Goza... :P Just MMO-C and WoW.com)

Maybe I can roll it into a top-middle bar, like the 'announcements' box that we have at the moment.

But good to know it's being used :)
Title: Re: New forum design
Post by: Goza on February 14, 2011, 12:05:09 pm
Maybe. But it doesnt show where the news is from anymore, unless you mousehover over it to see the link. And I gave up after being directed a dozen time to some shitty WoW Insider article.

Would it be possible for the IRC log to go back further in time, perhaps by clicking on a button added to the panel? I sometimes wish it had that functionality...

An official IE chatlog would be cool. Although the ones of us always being logged on already has those. I have almost complete logs going a few years back I guess Delling and Goza could have even more complete logs.

You can attach most things, incidentally, up to 30MB!

You might've noticed a few rather large changes:

The front page

The new front page takes posts from the new News board (http://www.iron-edge.co.uk/index.php?board=57.0). Only administrators and moderators can post new topics, but anyone can reply. Moderators will be people who add news/blog posts/videos/etc to the IE site.

I'm not too fussed about what kind of news we post, as long as it's related to IE in some way. Anything to do with any of the games we play is fine.

Posts in the News board will not be automatically put on the front page -- they will have to be 'published'. This is so that me (or someone else) can proof read posts before they go up on the front page.

We had some pretty good ideas of what should go on the front page. Progress reports... videos... class strategy... and so on. If you want to publish any of that kind of stuff, let me know.

(Any questions?)

-D

This is the top 10 searches that brought people to the IE site over the last 6 months or so.

Check out number 8...

(can replace 'imode' with 'wap2' if you prefer it)
