Dota 2
(http://i1036.photobucket.com/albums/a449/OlavF90/Dota2.png)

It's on!
http://www.dota2.com/ (http://www.dota2.com/)

Personally I think that Heroes of Newerth is pretty good, but I believe that this will be even better! Big fan of IceFrog!

Quote from: www.dota2.com
Q: Can you spectate an already ongoing DotA 2 game? (by Valo)
A: A lot of the game will be built around spectating and shoutcasting support. You will be able to join most ongoing games (unless the players marked it as private) and just watch them. You can join a game your friend is in, see what your favorite clan is doing, or simply pick a skill level and a hero you like and it will find you one to watch. (...)
This I really like! I hate it when I log into hon just when a game have started, I think spectating can be a lot of fun. And most games doesn't even use the spectate function.

Quote from: www.dota2.com
Q: Will you keep loyal to casting times like Torrent and will it still be possible to do the advanced tricks, like animation canceling, fog of war tricks we?ve learned, etc? (by Lycan)
A: Yes, those mechanics are implemented. They are a very integral part of the game and it wouldn?t feel the same without them.
Damn straight

Quote from: www.dota2.com
Q: Is there reconnect support for DotA 2? (by Vanes-UT)
A: This was actually one of the very first things we added early on, before the game was stable, in order to help with testing. You?ll also be able to have a friend of similar skill level substitute for you in case you have to leave. Players that want to improve their reputation in the game and community will also be able to help out by joining ongoing games that are missing players.
Pure awesome!

And much more on their website!

So, what do you think?

Heroes of Newerth versus Dota 2

Discuss!

Dota 2 if it lives up to the hype imho. I'll be getting it.

Havent played hon since beta, but playing LOL atm. Definetely going to swap to dota2 when it pops up and hopefully will get access to beta. Felt like hon and lol has been missing just something from the original one, hopefully icefrog will have that fixed!

I agree with Sparrowhawk there. HoN and LoL both have something. But they're not quite dota. Dota 1.0 (if we can call it that now) has been epic, but it's just too old now.

I'm excited to see how it turns out. Especially the spectator part, just grabbing food/drinks and start watching games. Quite fun ;d Might turn out to be a proper e-sport as well!

I've enjoyed HoN a lot more than DoTA. It's really progressed into a stupendous game.

I'll be keeping an eye on DOTA2 though. Could be very interesting, and the added support for replacing leavers and whatnot is very welcome.

And Sparrow, playing LoL? I thought I knew you man.

I would still prefer to be playing dota if it wasnt for it being a warcraft 3 mod and all the limitations of the old battle.net, disconnects, maphack etc.

Really looking forward to DOTA 2!

Prefer as in... over the current two, HoN and LoL? I wasn't aware you played either :X

WEll in my opinion HON is just improved version of DOTA .Except one important thingie which I dislike in HON that there is no 20% magic ressistance passive heroes have like in DOTA . Which makes caster OooPee. So i choose Dota  :)

If you play enough HoN you will realise that casters need to be more OP in the beginning since melee or carry in general will kick their butts later in the game. It all comes down to how you play it though. It's not really fair to say that "this or that" hero is OP, sure it may be a counter to many heroes but this "OP tag" will disappear as the game length grows. Or the other way around.

actually... I feel the carries are way too fucking strong in hon, and some strength gankers too.

I'm not so sure... While a fed agi carry in hon is quite strong, the whole huge aoe vibe seems way more prevalent than in original hon, and agi carries can get eaten by that pretty hard. Overall, I always feel a little less safe playing an agi carry in hon than in dota. If I got fed on say, troll warlord in dota, I felt pretty much completely untouchable, wheras if I've been fed on madman I can sure murder a hero or two if they're alone, but in the big 5v5s it feels a lot easier to die to aoe than in hon.

I prefer the slightly cagier and safer style personally, where there's less aoe and more focus on target picking.
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Thecurse on December 31, 2010, 04:08:28 am
is it out yet?? :P

well u can always counter a carry somehow if team is more or less equal.

I personally think HoN is just an improved dota and must admit when I saw my brother play hon first time I got so confused of all the aoe thingies I couldnt make out but that took like 4-5 games and I got used to it :P

Quote from: Dota-utilities.com
Coaching & Training System:
Once again, Valve is coming with a great innovation of coaching system which will be used to train a beginner to learn DotA 2 to sustain a respectable position in the community. It will allow veteran players to login as a coach. Coach can see beginner's screen and can get private voice chat during the game.

Now that is quite awesome. I hope we get the same player base as in the good ol' DotA, the 5vs5s was a lot of fun. And now we can have people spectate and coach the newbies!

Thought I'd let you know if you haven't seen their latest update announcing their first tournament, where the winner gets 1 million USD. S2 outmarketed :D

Sooo any of you guys also planning to bring the fellas over and watch the livestream on some bigass screen or something similiar (projector in my case).

Also, this seems a bit out of the blue to me, as I've yet to see anything proper from dota2...

1 Million USD prize, just extreme! ( good effect on advertising though.. )

Also no Korean team tittled as " most elite " team in this championship? They're losing it..
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Gozhell on August 02, 2011, 01:46:45 am
As far as I know it's going to be properly announced and hopefully released at the Gamescon in Cologne, which would make us assume that all the teams listed have been beta testing for quite a while.

I think their blog is failing tho... Shouldn't it be better to get us more hyped by keeping us up to date rather than saving it all for the release date? This way they would also get more feedback from the community or what is to become the community.
Title: Re: Dota 2

Copy pasted from the hon forums.

"Mineski Infinity:

Facing certainly more well-known opponents and more experienced players from all over the world, do you think your team has a chance of winning? Do you have any specific strategy in mind? How about studying (the replays) or training to counter any particular team(s)?

Dota 2, has a very different gameplay as compared to DotA. There are some heroes that are very strong, due to the fact that the traditional counters to them have not been released yet. We are still observing and experimenting with some imba heroes. As for the other teams that we have played with, I can say they are all pretty strong and talented as individuals.

Erik Johnson: DOTA 2 is a competitive game that borrows elements from action games, role-playing games, and real-time strategy games. The gameplay is very fast-paced, but rewards players for anticipating their teammates' and opponent's decisions, rather than rewarding twitch reflexes. Over the course of each match, which generally lasts less than an hour, you get a full RPG experience where your character starts with very little resources and skills -- but over time, becomes orders of magnitude more powerful. And while it has the camera position of a traditional RTS, you only (generally) control a single unit and don't have any base construction tasks to worry about.

I like that they have the fast paced gameplay, i think Dota was too slow. Or at least it feels slow after having played HoN so much.

Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Gozhell on August 12, 2011, 09:03:12 pm
I suppose so, but can't really tell until we get to see the final product tho!
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Starbrow on August 13, 2011, 01:50:46 am
Or just get to see... Anything. I'm not a huge fan of it being super fast paced, as it increases the risk that it's really horrible to watch for non-players. I think HoN is pushing it in terms of pace in teambattles sometimes where I simply cannot follow what the fuck is going on most of the time. That comes down to gamestyle though, but it slightly slower gameplay makes for better spectating joy.

that might be the levels or the ress timer maybe?

also if you look at the bindings of vengefull spirit they are EWC and thats just fucking retarded
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Gozhell on August 14, 2011, 04:55:28 pm
Res timer would be my ONLY guess.

Grish, I THINK valve would enable it so that you can change the original dota bindings considering the previous pictures I posted had QWER. Most of the Dota people would however like the original random bindings, this is why I think that this will be the default bindings.
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Starbrow on August 14, 2011, 05:01:26 pm
Well QWER would make the most sense for keybindings. As long as you can change the defaults as you like I guess it's no problem.

How much will Dota2 cost btw?
Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Grishnag on August 14, 2011, 05:07:57 pm
so they rather break their fingers trying to press a key binding then just have it at QWER

does not compute

one of the few things i realy hated about dota were those shitty bindings

I think the first day of this tournament was decent tbh! Had some lag issues in the beginning and didn't have more than 2-3 pauses at the end. Sure, I fell asleep but there are a lot of chinese teams in the tournament and they are WELL KNOWN for waiting until late-game to ensure victory, and you can't really blame them when there's quite a lot of money at stake.

I don't think I'll watch every single game like I did today tho, I'm just happy that I got to see some awesome gameplay!

Also, with Dota2 probably becoming a bigger subject, could we get a sub sub forum or whatever that would make it easier to categorize updates or whatever posts we might come up with.

I said it several times on IRC but I can say it again and if you don't understand what I'm saying then you could always google it!

Ancient Apperation (AA) was implemented in Dota about.. a while ago. Linky to him from playdota site: http://www.playdota.com/heroes/ancient-apparition

Unfortunately you only get two keys. I had made a deal with my rl friends (like many other smart people have) that if you got a key, your friend would get one vise versa. So the first key went to a friend who barely plays (shame) and the other friend got a key at the same time I did so I went on here to see if anyone here wanted a key and hey look at that, Palmar just wrote! What a crazy random happenstance!

Anyway, I should be relatively free to play during the weekend if anyone wanna put their game face on. Also, Dota 2 getting its own part of the forum soon?  :)

Title: Re: Dota 2
Post by: Palmar on December 07, 2011, 01:28:54 am
Yeah, I think the pace is actually great. And the heroes are much better. Feels less frantic and more strategy/teamplay oriented.

We're playing almost every night now, so feel free to join in, I'll be running dota groups from 22-ish server time (21 uk time) as many nights as I possibly can.

Sweet, let's play some tonight? The pace is a bit slower, more like LoL, which is cool.

I'm having a hard time getting used to the range though, after playing LoL too much xD Always when I've been playing vs Pudge and get hooked I'm like "WTF Where did that come from?!"

Pubs can be horrible in Dota 2 as well. Just because the game changes doesn't mean that the players change. I've had the luck to end up with decent players and met decent players, but then there are those who rage afk and won't shut up if things doesn't go his/her way.

I was a bit skeptic at the graphics when I compared them on the stream vs HoN but now I really like it. Heroes and the surroundings blend nicely together. I still find some spell animations to be too fast though, I knew I had to closely look for Lich ulti not to miss it lol.

What confuses me is the resolution :)

You see, I'm for example used to tidehunter's ulti covering most of the screen, so now that it doesn't at bigger field of view (which I assume is because of the resolution), I overestimate it's range.

Anyway, it still feels a lot better than lol, I guess I really hated not being able to deny, and of course it helps not being forced to learn like 2 million new heroes.

I have to agree with the spell animation thing, I kinda find it hard to notice some spells going around, wish there was a way to increase spell effects or something.

1 thing that i noticed is that u hear the sound of ultis before u see them.
ive taught my self to spread out fast the momment i hear that lich ulti go, it bounces soo fast that ur usualy fuckd if ur clumped up in any case.

but the sound thing works for quiet a few spells like the puck orb.

you can hear them before u see them

Yea I should probably try playing a game with sound for once.... I had sound enabled in WoW for a short period but not for very long. I have had Dota2 sound enabled so far though, but still got my own music in the background so I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Lich ulti and a last hit. :)

Title: Re: Dota 2

People suck wherever you go :p Not everyone can be as skilled as yourself unfortunately. No matter where you go people will most likely be "bad". The best solution to this is to play with friends, preferably a full team or there's always a chance for you to get that one person who simply doesn't understand english or just happens to be a ragekid.

So far I've had a better experience with Dota2 than with HoN when it comes to the players, but I could just have been lucky in my 90 games. It's not until lately that I've ended up with players who are impossible to communicate with.

Played a game! To be frank though it felt pretty unresponsive to me, especially when it comes to last hitting. I felt very clumsy, even compared to in LoL. The shop is indeed quite painfully unintuitive too, here's hoping they overhaul it a bit. Also, the default keybindings for items being the numpad keys made me wtf a little.

Nevertheless, it looks pretty enough, and I'm looking forward to playing some games with IE very much.

Yeah the first thing you do is change the hotkeys...

As for the shop, what do you not like about it? It works pretty easy once you figure it out and you can search for items if you don't want to go through each tab.
Title: Re: Dota 2

coming from hon you have to relearn the name of all items again
to be honest i didnt think it was that bad but it was realy confusing the first time you open the show though

besides you can make your own recommended tab now so you dont even have to go through all the things in the shop anyway

Welp, I think you've described my problem with it again - having to 'figure it out' sort if suggests it has more of the nature of a puzzle about it than it should!

Im liking the game although i mainly just play sven! Bam!

I just find the UI to be utterly retarded and outdated. This is includes the shop and the way you buy things. Reaction to a click feels slower then in HoN but that might be imagination.

Can't wait for people to create mods for Dota2. I'm not playing it right now and won't be for a bit but the UI is simply too big, same goes for the minimap. I can control my mouse and sort of know where it's gonna end up and don't need such a large hitbox on the map.

So some friends and I decided to do some proper beta testing and I can now tell you guys that it is not safe to save more than 20k gold or spam couriers. If you die with ~20k gold you will stop receiving gold until you're down to a reasonable amount of gold and if you spam couriers (couple of hundreds in this case) the server will crash.

Thought I'd let you know.

Why don't you bind inventory, there is plenty available keybinds and it will help you a lot.

Since I'm using Legacy Hero Bindings I'm kinda limited so I'm using Space, Tab, Caps Lock etc. for inventory.

Having had a thunk about it, seems to me the main problem isn't exactly the size, but the inconsistancy in height of the bottom UI bits. The minimap especially sticking way out.

He's not defending them, just saying what he is used to. But Pluug is complaining, in the sense that it limits his abilities to play, about something that is outdated and I don't quite understand it. Join the rest and learn to press QWER :p Sure it will take some time to get used to it but then you won't be "limited" anymore.

You misunderstood, Palmar got Delling a key, which generated two extra copies he could give away, where Delling was so graceful as to give me one of them.

so you can generate two extra keys now?

He can't. Delling got a "real" key that grants two gift keys. I got one of them, Sky got the other one and we dont have gift keys attached.

And when does it come out?

Or did they decide not to implement. AR/AREM etc.

I think you confuse me with another Dota player Kawe.

Though your Dota/HoN arrogance remains ever bitter and pointless.

Hey now that's rude and inaccurate. I'm pretty bad at hon and dota, but that's really nothing to do with you being found mostly with tail firmly between legs the moment HP dips below 95% squealing. You don't need to hide it, we accept you all the same. Well, as much as we can, it's tricky to welcome someone with open arms when they're constantly fleeing from, well, everything.

Oh really?

And what is that based on? One moment in a Hon game (having not played in like over a year) where I decided not to follow you into a suicidal rush, and that makes me "yellow bellied" and "fleeing from everything"? One game out of the dozens of games of Dota/Hon we have played together, and enjoyed, and you feel the need to come on to the forums, make a dickish comment like you have, for god knows what reasons.

Who are you trying to impress with such comments? Are you really that person?

How about you be less of a twat Kawe, and more like the Kawe I knew who enjoyed playing Dota/Hon with his guildies, and didn't feel the need to berate them at pretty much every opportunity thus tainting a game I used to enjoy playing with you.

Dont think EM will be implemented but AR and all the other stupid modes will be in the game

think priority at the moment is porting over heroes from the old dota besides you can AR if you want just make a 5v5 and tell everyone to press random

How hard is it to get a Beta key? Are they still like gold dust?

go sign up, get added on the team, etc. These guys are running tournaments on weekends and they seem to have gathered a bit of a following. Nice for some organized gaming sessions etc.

We might even do a tourney this weekend!

apparently you need a password to join the team. pm me for the pass.

@Delling: Could you get us a dota 2 subforum (similar to sc2)? Two forums, one general one and one guild-only for discussing strategies. Can we do that?
