Looking for new stationary PC
« on: January 03, 2009, 01:54:28 am »
So, I have decided that my laptop simply doesn't perform well enough for my needs, lagging haard in L4D, sometimes in WoW, and all the other Steam-games I have (Except for Peggle)..

I've spent quite some time to come up with a relatively cheap PC that still performs well. I'm a student afterall, and I've compiled this set of hardware, at a price of 5700 NOK (or 630 euro, 603 pounds):

Power Supply: Corsair Powersupply 550W Bulk, black,
Motherboard: Asus M3N78-VM, GeForce 8200, DDR2, m-ATX
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 6000 89W,
DDR2 Memory: Kingston ValueR. DDR2 PC5300 4096MB CL5,
Graphics Card: PowerColor Radeon HD 3650 512MB DDR2,
Harddisk: Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB,
Sony NEC Optiarc DVD±RW burner AD-7200S,
Shit-OS (Couldn't select without OS or XP)PS: I know you need 64-bit for full usage of 4gb memory!:
MS ROYALTY Vista Home Premium
MS COA Label Windows
MS Win Vista Home Premium Norsk
MS MANUALS Win Vista Home Premium
EDIT: Need a screen aswell, thinking of:
BenQ 22" LCD T2200HD
TCO03, 1920x1080, 1000:1, 5ms, VGA/DVI
for an additional 1,3k NOK..

I'm sure I included a bunch of useless info there, but what do you think? Can it smoothly run games on the valve engine? (L4D, TF2, CSS), FarCry2, CoD5 etc with "OK" graphics settings? As you've probably understood by now, I'm pretty green on hardware, but I checked all the compatibilities and contacts!

After chatting some with Vorte and Thora/Sapa, I have reviewed my choice of hardware, and now come up with THIS:

Corsair Powersupply 650W Black, ATX/EPS, - 102,05 EUR
Asus M3A-H/HDMI, AMD 780G+SB700, ATX, - 81,95 EUR
AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core 2,1 GHz Boxe - 107,69 EUR
Corsair Value S. PC5300 DDR2 4096MB - 48.38 EUR
Gainward GeForce 9800GT 512MB PhysX CUDA - 123.78 EUR
Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA2 - 72.20 EUR
USB2 multikortleser 3.5" sort forBLABLABLABAL - 10 EUR
Sony NEC Optiarc DVD±RW burner AD-5200A, - 20 EUR
PC Uten OS, White Box PC - FREELOL
Saitek Gaming Mouse, 1600dpi,
Logitech Deluxe 250 Keyboard NO
Videoseven 22" LCD D22W11 TCO-03 - 143.89 EUR

at a complete price of 8100 NOK (895,79 EUR).. It's 100EUR more expensive, but seems to be worth the additional money..

Seems like a very good setup Grilly imo .There is some price diference like here this setup will cost me around 70-80 euro cheaper ,but overall everything seems good to me.
The only thing I can recommend you ,is diferent CPU . I'm using Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz and I dont think it will be much more expencive then AMD Phenom 8450 Triple-Core 2,1 GHz Boxe , but anyway you need to check .As far as I know Asus motherboards are prety good , but I personaly prefer MSI using MSI P35 NEO-F s.775 1333MHz motherboard .

I'd have to pay around 60 EUR to crank it up to a quad core processor, and I don't know if the ones I looked at were any good (around 2,1-2,4ghz). Also, I'm sure a tri-core 2,1 is enough to serve me well :) Thanks for all the advice, Thora! I've taken it all into consideration ;)

Main changes I'd make:
an ATi 4850 graphics card, which is around the same price range as the 9800 GT; and an intel core2 duo, for a good price the E5200 is good at around £70 depending where you buy.

For ram, more does not mean faster in most situations; not only that, but a 64 bit OS comes with its own problems too. Go with 2GB of ram and a 32 bit OS. You might even buy some higher quality ram. Though it won't impact the system to the same degree as the cpu and gpu.

And get a razer diamondback mouse. They're quite cheap these days (the old ones) and they're really good.

And get a Samsung screen!

What Kawe says.
I have the 4870, the "bigger" version of the 4850, it's awesome. So go for the 4850 if you need to save some bucks.

Both 4850 and 4870 are good video cards and prety much similler comepring with GeForce 9800GT , its mostly a matter of your own choise which one to get .I'm using GeForce 8800 GTX XFX (the overcloaked version) its abit old comparing all those new cards availible now , but imo its still one of the best gaming cards exist .
