New pc
« on: August 11, 2010, 05:12:59 pm »
Yaya, long overdue. Just asking for any input/suggestions and if I'm not forgetting anything here (except HDD's ;) ). Seems i7 is still superior for now.

Cooler Master CM 690 II Advanced € 77,-
Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B    € 32,49
Intel Core i7 930 € 249,-
Antec TruePower TP-650   € 101,-
OCZ Gold Low-Voltage OCZ3G1333LV6GKiew    € 123,50
Asus P6X58D-E   € 211,30
Palit GeForce GTX 460 Sonic Platinum (1024MB GDDR5) € 238,-

I'm not too sure about which 460 to get *searches further on google*.

How do i3's match upto i7's for games?

Do u really need a 77 euro heatsink? I got a 20 euro one for my e8400 and i could oc it by 25%...

211 euros for a mobo is a bit extreme aswell!

Well I don't really wanna go lowend for cpu since it will be a while before this pc will get upgraded. 77 euro is the case actually :P.

As for the motherboard, there is a cheaper Asrock one that has both USB3 and sata600 but the motherboard layout is pretty bad. Asus has all these features and has pretty decent robust products from what I can tell. The bios of the Asrock is also sucky.

Oh case? sorry, yeah that's "fine" I guess.  I prefer my cheap 10 euro cases tho :P

Ah, yeah.  Forgot that I* mobos being generally expensive.  Too damn expensive. It's why I never upgraded to one.

With an i7 if you're going air, it's well worth getting one of these or the copper version - i7s overclock so hideously well, it's kind of a waste of money not to give them good enough cooling to get better value out of them. Only thing about this heatsink is that if you stick two 120mm fans to it, it is huge. Like, srs hueg. Check your case would have sufficent room, and if/how much it might overhang a ram slot.

Unless the £ to € is cruel, this might be a good, cheaper alternative motherboard. But naturally being a bit older it's not got usb3 or anything brand spanking new. Given you're building new I can see that being a pretty big deal-breaker.

At any rate, I don't think you can go too far wrong at the moment building a new system. There's not a lot of awful products out.

They're about the same price, difference here is about 6 euros in favor of the new one here.

I have handed over most of my hardware choices to www.overclockers.co.uk. I just chose the processor and graphics card type. Here is the one I would get if I was buying today

Oh God said to Abraham, "Kill me a son"
Abe says, "Man, you must be puttin' me on"
God say, "No."
Abe say, "What?"
God say, "You can do what you want Abe, but the next time you see me comin' you better run"
Well Abe says, "Where do you want this killin' done?"
God says, "Out on Highway 61"

I'll give my 2 cents as I've just got back from an Intel presentation from my work ;D

The i3 basicly is 'shit' compared to the i5 or i7. The i3 doesn't have the turbo-boost function which can enhance your clockspeed dependable on how it's cooled (so yeah, more cooling means more performance). And the i3 doesn't have the turbo-boost. Nor does it have the hyperthreading I tink..if I payed enough attention.

And the i7 is 25% more efficient in multitasking than say an i5. So the i7 is the better option. Man it feels good knowing I've learned something that I can actualy use! If you want to know more about AC-Ryan mediaplayers and Hewlett-Packard stuff, ask away! ^^

you DON'T use the turbo boost setting if you overclock your i7 - it's asking for trouble. Turbo boost is designed to work at stock settings.

Aye the h50 is nice. Scythe Mugen 2 Rev. B seems to be suggested a lot at this dutch guide so I'll probably stick with it.
