Pfft... I was the one that brought Daggerfall to the UK! (Little-known factoid, that.)

Cool that they've finally made it to Skyrim. I played some Morrowind, didn't finish it. Skipped Oblivion. (Or was it the other way around?)

Guess I ought to try this one :)

Don't forget that Bethesda's owner ZeniMax Media also bought id software and thus owns/has access to the new id Tech 5 engine used in Rage.

They even said they won't license id Tech 5 to anyone else and just use it internally. We'll see about that.

Not licensing out an engine sounds stupid given how much Epic must be making from UE3 for example.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: Goza on July 25, 2011, 04:05:27 pm
Well, you can license it, but then you'll have to agree to your game being published by Bethesda Softworks. If they are interested in it...

http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/29886/id_Tech_5_Rage_Engine_No_Longer_Up_For_External_Licensing.php

Maybe they want to use Carmack's "tech guru fame" to soak up developers for their publishing label...? His last main tech release was Doom3 thou, we'll have to see whether Carmack actually beats Unreal Engine. I'm not _that_ excited by the Rage movies anymore, but most developers who saw it in action at some convention say it's srsly hot shit.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: kawe on July 25, 2011, 04:09:59 pm
Eh... well, I guess they must be fairly confident that they have some serious pulling power. Also not too excited about Rage - the gameplay videos and demonstrations seemed as though while they've done clever shit with an engine, the game design side has remained rather in the past. Not to say that means it won't/can't be fun, but I don't see it being some standout experience.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: Daekesh on July 25, 2011, 06:17:02 pm
The awesome thing about Rage is that it seems to run on just about anything from Alienware to a wrist watch.  Sure, the game itself might not be great, but it should open some interesting opportunities for cool graphics on smaller devices.

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: Hugman on October 10, 2011, 03:40:54 pm
So this may be a silly question, but I am going to ask it anyway.

I am a big fan of the Elder Scrolls games, having started with Daggerfall, then Morrowwind, and Oblivion. I bought my Xbox 360 5-6 years ago, for the sole purpose of playing Oblivion on it. I remember starting up the game, getting out of the dungeon, and climbing the nearest hill, and being blown away by how amazing the graphics were, looking down over the large panoramic landscape, and mightily impress by how real it looked, even on a console.

Anyway, so now Skyrim is coming out, and I am definitely getting it, but my delimma becomes, should I get it on the Xbox 360, or the PC. I liked being able to play Oblivion on the Xbox 360 wireless controller, and like I said I was impressed with the graphics. However, its now been 5-6 years, and its the same console. Obviously my PC's specs are going to be much better than those of the Xbox 360, and I am thinking that it may make a dramatic difference.

What do we think? Even with the new engine for Skyrim, will there be a large difference in graphic quality, between the console and a modern PC? So much so that its not worth getting it on the Xbox?

Advice please.

When it comes to graphics, I don't see any console being ahead of a good PC.

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: Doomslay on October 10, 2011, 03:52:40 pm
Depends on what you value from the game - i'm sure if you aren't -that- interested in shiny shiny then the console version will be just as fun, the same way oblivion was. It also depends how much you wanna play it, I sometimes prefer playing games casually on a console, especially if i'm playing a few at once.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: Goza on October 10, 2011, 04:15:34 pm
My magic crystal ball is broken, so I can't tell you which version will be better. Usually I go by this:

- check whether they managed to fck up a version (check reviews)
- if same release date: does PC version support xbox gamepad? -> get PC version (cause PC version usually faster loading times; higher resolution == better gfx)

Also depends on where you want to play. Console version/TV living room vs PC/desk.

the thing is that the PC version is bound to get  a metric fuckton of mods aswell
some better then others obviously but still

personaly i am going for the pc version simply because i dont like having a crontroller in my hand

Not having modded any of these sort of games before grish, is it worth it? I mean, generally, I think that modding  a game like this would ruin it.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: delling on November 10, 2011, 06:03:02 pm
They're usually in the form of user-generated content, Hug -- extra dungeons and so on. You can mod the swords to be super-mega-magical, I guess, but that's not the main gist of it.

Only ever played one RPG on a console -- Fable II. It was OK. Think I'll be sticking to the PC version.

Post by: Grishnag on November 10, 2011, 06:15:21 pm
well oblivion nowadays is mostly used for loli nude mods... or a waifu generator

there are different mods like in oblivion the khajit had a racial that allowed them to have night vision but you had to use it once ever couple of minutes there was a small mod that just made it a toggle
you know stuff like that maybe small things maybe different armors... maybe a new questline

maybe nude mods :P

Re. mods for oblivion and suchlike, I kinda dislike some of the texture packs - I liked the idea, but they often manage to just be 'hi res' at the expense of all else. Sometimes a blurry texture that 'fits' is better than a cripser one that looks really unnatural in the environment/on the shapes they're plastered to.

That said, I wish I'd had the mods available for oblivion that fix the sometimes utterly comically hideous faces on NPCs that you're meant to take seriously. The visual mods in general for oblivion are pretty decent if you pick and choose, e.g. taking a nice weather mod here, a window lighting mod there, and so on and so forth.

I think Skyrim, thankfully, doesn't suffer from the superbad faces. But I have no doubt at all that modders will be hard at work creating tweaked visuals. And, going by their track records? Many modders will also be hard, at work on smutty mods.

So, since Steam/Bethesda dosn't want my money i decided to get game by other means. It play's similar to Morrowind (and propably Oblvion, havent played it tho so cant be sure). Graphic is medicore at best, controls not exactly perfect for PC. But... fuck my life, so many choices, so many ways of playing, so big freedom (at least it seems that way now). Loving it! (also runs perfectly even on old PC like mine).

Make sure you aint using the "auto hardware detect" feature. It put my PC on "low", but it runs just as smooth on "high". Ill try "ultra" later but I think it'll just add AA as I already manually set all other important stuff to max.

...why does autodetect suck on so many games lately...

Werewolf is ez mode. Before I got it I checked if it could be cured, but the curing was bugged for me for a while. After trying several times it did work.

It's a shame there's quite a lot of bugs, but the amount of content/story makes up for it.

You shoulda seen the bugs in Daggerfall... which it sounds like Skyrim is the spiritual successor of. It was very, very easy to break the main storyline after 200 hours of play and be forced to start again. Just had to kill the wrong NPC... or be in the wrong place by a few pixels...

You could be a werewolf or vampire in Daggerfall, too! Pretty fun (and incurable).

I have a question about the skill points you gain from your actions. Is there a limit to how many you can get or can you (theoretically) max all your skills? Note that I'm not talking about perks.

I don't know if you can level  your skills after you reach the level cap which is 50

You HAVE to play this game on expert while a mage.

you can buy them in winterhold college, second floor of the tower on the right from the elf guy. respawn time 2 days, 2 available for purchase per recharge period. can also do the Black Star questline, gets you roughly six.

Post by: kawe on November 16, 2011, 02:43:57 pm
I dunno what magical anomalies are, but if you're having trouble with any enemy I've found what helps me is to try and stay stocked up on various offensive and defensive potions, and also to try and make sure to use all the tools at my disposal, e.g. I may be a thief with basically the starting mana pool and next to no skill with magic, but I do have a healing spell and some magic pots. Also SHOUTS! Maybe you don't, but I often forget I have them, and using them can make a big difference.

Failing all that, the time I had a very difficult encounter I ended up managing by taking a bunch of time to assess the situation and the layout of enemies etc, trying to thin them out bit by bit.

Hope that helps!

If it's the ruins of Avanchnzel then the key is in Riften, at the docks. Some Breton female gives you a cube. After activation it gives you a buff, 10% faster smithing and dwarven armor is better or some shit.

Edit: Lexicon cube, I think.

I'm assuming you mean the Alftand ruins. There is a quest (from winterhold i think?) that give you the key needed. Just go back later once you have that quest.

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Post by: kawe on November 19, 2011, 09:52:08 am
Depends a lot on your weapons, armour and how upgraded they are + potions :D

at level 15-20 or so as a light armour user I could *survive* being hit by a giant maybe twice if I didn't heal. By level 40 with some heavily upgraded gear, I could one-shot giants with a power attack.

A big part of it is in your perks and items - if you're using 1H items, hang onto any 'of wielding' rings/necklaces/gloves, or if you're using 2Hers then 'of sure grip'. Upgrade your weapons (and armour!) at a forge while under the effects of a potion of blacksmithing and ideally while wearing some items with +% smithing and you'll see massive gains.

Zeref. Dragonplate armor is lighter then Daedric but daedric gives more armor + you can get the heavy armor perk that removes weight.

I'd suggest you go make daedric

So, is anyone else playing a standard/destruction mage?

I'm level28, have my main perks in Destruction, secondary stuff in Speech (want to sell my stolen goods), Lockpicking (so many locks), rest spread on Light Armor, OneHanded etc...

Now, does magic dmg scale at all? I can burn the standard mobs since the beginning, no issue. But dungeon bosses (especially magic ones) now become a bit annoying, they hardly take damage while dealing a lot themselves. I have never found a "+magic dmg" item yet, only "less spell cost" or "more mana regen".

So, screw magic, go melee?

No, desto spells don't scale.

So late in the game you'll be destroyed 40-50+.

few mods out for it to fix it though

There are equipment, potions and enchants that increase that specific magic trees damage or reduce the mana cost of those trees

Personaly I have no problem with dungeons and the bosses in that dungeon cause I just oneshot them with a backstab  I only upgraded my dagger once to flawless and it does 47 damage because of perks
Basicly I Just sneak and backstab if I ever do get in a fight I can't get out of I am able to just summon some atronach and 2 bound swords

@goza re. magic damage:

Quote from: http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/mj5m3/well_999_damage_is_the_max/c31cya1
bethsoft post about it (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1266212-2469-armor-3199-damage-using-smithing-alchemy-enchanting-only-31-perks/)

I would also read through the other thread as well if you want.

Summary post midway through their discussion (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1275179-2419-armor-6399-damage-using-smithing-alchemy-enchanting-only-33-perks-329k-backstabs/page__view__findpost__p__19322008)

Max armor is 85% 80% mit, which is somewhere between 500-672 armor (one post said ~574 iirc), anything above 672 is useless

Damage isn't capped really. You can get weapons that do 3-6k dmg (i'm unsure on this number now) without sneak bonus, ancient dragons have 3.1k health

You can also buff spell damage unlike what many believed. +162% dmg potions can be made, then you can use 2 poisons to maximize the damage. +weakness to poison, followed by a +weakness to shock (or w/e element). Making thunderbolt dual cast do ~1600 dmg here is a link to this post. (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1275179-2419-armor-6399-damage-using-smithing-alchemy-enchanting-only-33-perks-329k-backstabs/page__view__findpost__p__19329217)

Overall, the maximum damage you can possibly do would be with a dual wielding (one handed weapons) orc using berzerker and sneak attacking. I think that is somewhere around 60k dmg iirc, because it was 32.9k dmg sneaking.

So basically, if you make these weapons you'll one / two shot everything. If you get the max armor as well as max magic resist (which is also 85%), you hopefully one won't die in one hit to any enemy even on master. Game becomes trivial.

Personally, I'm not doing this on my main character - it ruins the game imo. Once i play through the game and feel content with having experienced it, i'll probably end up doing this to try it out.

EDIT1 -

For mages - you can also have 0% magicka cost on spells. using these enchants (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1282025-maxed-out-destruction-reduction/page__view__findpost__p__19361613)

Then use the above 162% dmg potion for general fights, and the poisons for boss opponents. I'm thinking about doing this in full daedric armor and role-playing as Sauron :P You can still die, (physical dmg resist caps at 80%, so if you aggro a bunch of high level melee mobs and they swarm you, you will still die) but you're pretty much not going to die to anything as long as you are smart about it.

EDIT2 -

Note that the above values of doing 3k dmg in one hit, or 32k backstabs etc are under the effect of a +%weapon dmg potion that lasts 60 seconds. Then the orc berzerker bonus would double that to give you 6k hits for 60 seconds.

Without using any additional potions except the initial ones used to craft the gear, you'd be doing roughly 500-600 damage per hit with these weapons. So the damage shown in OP is likely to be while under the effect of one of these potions, not a permanent value.

Additionally:

shield perks are still valid, and honestly when you're doing 1k dmg every swing you can use whatever weapon you want.

EDIT -- Actually, having a shield is optimal for magic resist because of the perk "elemental protection" which reduces incoming fire, frost, and shock damage by 50%. This stacks with your 85% mitigation. Using this as well as some resist enchantments on your armor / accessories can make spells do virtually no damage to you.

Here (http://forums.bethsoft.com/index.php?/topic/1275179-2419-armor-6399-damage-using-smithing-alchemy-enchanting-only-33-perks-329k-backstabs/page__view__findpost__p__19317260) is a post by Excessive on the bethsoft forums detailing this.

Hey, I bought a house off Jorleif in Windhelm for 12k, but I don't know where it is. If anyone knows where it is, please tell me.

Kawe, I'll go for magic resist to mitigate dmg but I think relying on potions to boost magic damage is kinda stupid. Don't potions last like 2mins?

I totally agree, but it is there. I'd like to think someone will produce a mod for it.

also, this is useful for those who like to use a specific  companion, but find him/her to be getting weak as time goes on:

Quote from: http://www.reddit.com/r/skyrim/comments/mloea/lydia_said_she_was_no_longer_going_to_carry_my/c31x8du
the companion is stuck at what level you get her at. Since most people get Lydia fairly early, she's a really low level.

Someone came out with an easy way to fix this. Open console and left click on your companion (some numbers should show up in the middle of the screen). Type "disable" in the console command window then "enable" without the quotes. This should bring your companion up to the appropriate level.

Well yeah, so I finally did the Black Star mission to get the rechargeable soul gem, and as I'm Lvl30, I get 3 Daedric Mages thrown in my face which can each oneshot me while taking minimal dmg themselves. This game has serious scaling issues.

Guess taking perks in (anti)social skills like Speech, Lockpicking, Stealth while leveling from 20-30 pretty much fucked up my mage. Which is very sucky cause it negates the game's "play as you like" style.

Luckily I'm playing on PC so I can use the console commands to respec for magic resistance and melee/armor perks.

Also, I seem to only encounter 2 kind of enemies. Cannon fodder that dies in seconds and magic casters/bosses that one/two-shot me while taking almost no dmg themselves. Guess the game's MobDmgOutput = PlayerLevel*something and MobMagicResistance = PlayerLevel*Something formulas are kinda broken.

So far, as melee, I've only invested in offensive (mostly 1-hander, but a few in archery too), stealth and profession perks (more or less). I haven't invested in any armour perks, but I was experiencing some close to one-shot-by-fire-spell (difficulty between mid and highest), but a 40% fire res neck seems to have solved it for me.

I plan to re-craft some dragonscale armour soon and re-enchant some pieces with % magic resist to all schools, but I mostly enchant with offensive things like % to 1-hander dmg. My Daedric swords are @ 107dmg atm! (made a +% to BS leather set :)).

Investing in armour perks just feels unnecessary, really. At least around 30-35 - might change later of course. I just go all out dmg and rely on the insane amounts of pots you can make/find for healing/stamina. I mean, boom, 3 specials, stamina 150 pot, boom 2-3 more. Freeze someone with a shout, scrolls.. offensive is insane.

Anyone have some recommendations on how to build a successful dual wield character to play on Master difficulty? I tried it on my first playthrough and was quickly getting fucked up way to quickly. Started over as a sneaky bow guy and everything went smooth, but that dual wield was seriously fun!

I tried mostly running in Heavy Armor and get as much health as possible, keeping a healing spell handy. Any suggestions?

Well, what I wrote above works good for me, and it is my first go at a char. I did "fix" some 2 or 3 talents that I messed up in the beginning (thanks console!), but yeah, I'm ripping shit, and I can only see it improve as I improve my enchanting. Stamina pots are awesome.

but a 40% fire res neck seems to have solved it for me.

I didn't level enchanting (which apparently is quite OP) yet, so I can only make shitty enchants myself and therefore am limited to random loot I receive regarding resistance. So far I have some 30% fire boots I got early on and stole some 60% shock resistance gloves, but that's kinda it.

Btw, doing the MageGuild questline I got a +70 Magic hat. But... it apparently shares the "head slot" with my awesome magic robe... So when I equip it, I'm wearing a hat but I'm standing in my underwear. Yeah, thx for that. I only noticed when kids in town yelled "Naked! Naked!" after me. PervSimulator2011.

A question about melee weapons.

I'm kind of confused about the different types dagger/sword/axe/mace. I know the dmg increase with slower weapon, but is it just me or doesn't balance out? I get the feeling daggers and swords beat mace and to a lesser extent axe but quite a bit.

I've found Life leeching sword during the thieves guild quest, how effective can these be when you have no defense other than your armor? I have yet to try enchant anything because I have downs so a more experienced players input is appreciated.

Btw anyone playing with a 360Gamepad, use this mod to enable hotkeys.
http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=655

I put Hotkeys1-7 on DPAD, in addition to the preset DPAD UP for quick menu.

Pretty much this, anything melee does pratically nothing to me, got max upgraded daedric armour. But some casters 2 - 3 shot me. Lvl 37 on Master.

That azuras star quest would have been much easier if I didn't get detected before I even talked to the guy inside the gem  in the end I got it done with hiding behind those gem outcroppings and just shooting it with my bow

As for the soul trap enchant its pretty random I got it quite early but since I have conjuration it doesn't realy matter

[spoiler]
I've cured my werewolf, but not according to what was on a wiki. You're supposed to get a quest to cure yourself after you've done the Companions quests. If you did the companions quests (all of them), then you know you can cure it with a special witch head, throw that in some fire and kill the wolf that appears, then you're cured. I didn't get the quest, and I tried a few times to use the head with the fire, but it was bugged for me. Eventually it worked (came back to that dungeon like 4 times).

There's also supposed to be some kind of scroll with one time use apparently. No clue where to find that.
