Tales of the Past III and private server
« on: December 17, 2006, 10:12:46 pm »
Hello Iron Edge!

For various reasons, parts of Tales of the Past III will be recorded on a special private server. It makes us able to do some things that would othervise be impossible - however, I will need some actors willingly to go through a couple of downloading/installation steps - basically I'll need to ask you to download a rather large beta client file. Some of you may already have this installed, else here is the link:

https://beta.worldofwarcraft.com/expansion/downloads/#none

The important thing to start out with, is to get the client before TBC releases in January (at least to be on the safe side). Thus, if you start downloading as soon as possible, we will have a better chance at getting enough people for the scenes.

I'm aiming at getting approximately 150 people to download the beta client and have a separate version of wow available with it. That way, I'll have a pretty good chance of getting approximately 50 people ready for the scenes needed. That means approximately 10 guilds will be contacted about this. If you have ingame friends that you trust and that would like to participate, then feel free to let them know of this as well!

How to install it:
First, you'll have to rename your standard wow folder. It should now be named "World of Warcraft" - rename it to something else, for instance "WoWNormal" or something like that. Then, you install wow as if you were going to install it from new. This will naturally mean that the new version you install of WoW (the nonupdated one) will be installed in the standard folder called "World of Warcraft", which is the folder that the TBC-client will look for. This will allow you to play the normal gave and at the same time play the private server version (you might have to redo the renaming when you are to install TBC so that it works properly, but shouldn't be a biggie). The reason it has to be made this way, is that if you try to install the TBC client on your current version of wow, it will most likely give you an error (the client needs to be installed on the original wow installation and after that it needs to be updated all the way).
Now, when you've done this, start downloading the beta client from the page above. This takes alot of time, so just let it download while you're at work or school - that's at least what I did! :)
When the beta client has been downloaded (just download it to some random folder), you install it (again to some random folder). It will ask you to upgrade your acc to beta or not. You will choose to "skip" the update of your account.
When it is installed, you will go through some updating steps. Enter wow with the TBC desktop shortcut and enter your account information as usual. You will then have to do a ton of "restart"-update small patch-"restart" etc untill you get to the specific version we need (atm it's the highest version, so just let it update all the way UNLESS you see that the version number it's updating to is higher than the one below:

"2.0.3.6213"

When you've reached the right version, you will be ready to play on the private server and you will receive a password/code when we are about to start - The most important thing is to get all the updates down on your computer before Blizzard decide to remove it from their site!

To be able to join the private server, find the "realmlist.wtf" file in TBC folder. In there, paste this line "set realmlist 71.90.76.30" instead of the line currently there. That will allow you to join the server once you've gotten a pass/username.

I've chosen 10 guilds from the ones I know, not particulary favoring some above others, but most guilds are old Dunemaul'ers and with GM's/Officers I've talked to in the past :)

If your guild does not seem to be up for this in general, then please let me know so I have an estimate of the amount of people having the stuff on their comp.

I realise it's a lot of downloading and slightly troublesome, however the scenes should be pretty fun as well :) The reason we'll need this is 1# because blazer sold his account, 2# because we need Thrall and Rexxar, 3# because Blizzard nerfed modelreplacement and 4# because we're able to do some awesome and fun stuff on a private server (changing weather etc). The big battle scenes etc and most other scenes will still be made on Dunemaul, perhaps some on Tarren-Mill instead, but due to the fact that Blazer left, there isn't much reason to shoot scenes on Tarren-Mill anymore. The only reason left for me are the guilds that have helped out with Tales of the Past II - I wish to give those a chance to be part of the last movie as well, so this is the way for them to join mainly :)

If you have some questions, just let me know!

The one hosting the private server prefers to remain anonymous (though he's quite famous), so if you figure out who it is, please don't share the info. That is the main reason I'm posting this to specific guilds instead of just posting it on Dunemaul.org and Tarren-Mill.com.

If you wish to contact me and I'm not replying on PM's that fast, then you can contact me via www.talesofthepast.com under the "contact"-page.

Shootings will probably start around TBC release, maybe a bit later, but pretty close :)

I greatly appreciate the support so far and I hope you're up for going through the downloading and installation of this, it will be a great help to me! I'll be posting in your guildforum when we shoot private server scenes, other scenes will be posted about on www.dunemaul.org !

It should be quite fun to get this done, I've tried flying around with flying mounts and going into outland etc - it rocks! Should be some quite fun recordings when we start!

Hey Maq!

Nice to see you still alive and kicking! I see ToTP has received some pretty awesome publicity too! Kinda cool :)

I'll be happy to help out, as will quite a few other IE I'm sure. A lot of us have the beta client downloaded already (!), so it shouldn't be too much of a problem for us to take part.

What are we doing about characters/logistics? We're all going to create level 1 alts? Or we're going to get given characters with mounts?

Do we get to choose our class? Our gear, so that we're recognisable? Our names? :)

-D
Now I run a tech website.

Good questions Delling! :) Your names can be chosen by yourself!

I will be granted GM abilities which means I'll basically be able to decide your gear - however, let's say Delling joins the server:

You will be able to create a lvl 1 character that looks the way you think he should look. Some scenes will require some particular looks/race/gender types, though, but you'll still be able to keep your name. You'll be able to create both a horde and alliance char on the server.

Basically, you'll be joining the server in good time before the shooting, each of you will be given some new password/username and you might be able to meet with me. In theory we'll be able to customize each of you if I ain't too lazy and you're able to catch me ingame :) For some scenes, though, I'll most likely ask you to create lvl 1 specific chars and I'll spam a macro to give you some specific gear.

It's not completely settled which scenes will be made on the private server, though I'm guessing around 20 % of the scenes we are to do will be made there - the good thing is that we are able to control weather conditions and tons of other stuff :)

About the mounts, you will probably be given standard mounts and flying mounts to play around with, though we might keep it to standard mounts to start out with to create less of a mess! :D

Anyhow, it should be quite fun to do these recordings, so I'm looking forward to having you guys on the crew again!

Remember, the most important part is to get the client and the updates ready before blizz chooses to take down the downloads (this could be decided at any moment for all we know, but will most likely be close to the release of TBC). If you have that downloaded, all should be fine :)

CASUAL NORWEGIAN PERSON IS IN.

Do we leave any sort of contact information so you can give us accounts on the server, or...?
I just skipped through most of it, so my apologies if I missed it.

Count me in, probably not as voice actor. My Norwegian accent would make me sound like a drunken troll.

CASUAL NORWEGIAN PERSON 2 IS IN!

I'd love to be a part of this movie! Loved the two first ones. I could also do some voice acting if you need a "drunken troll".
(And this will get me an oppertunety to try out flying mounts before TBC:D )

Just while we're at it. Isn't this against the EULA and/or that other thing?

You won't be using your own acc info, you'll be given a new username and pass to be able to join the private server - hence nothing is really chained to your account. The only way you'd risk a ban would be if some 11 year old guy reports you and even then he'll need to have some sort of proof you did indeed join and exploit the private server. In that case, the only real waterproof proof would be if you'd be posting frapsed stuff of you flying around with tier 5 on the private server on warcraftmovies.com, which won't be the case ofc ;) In other words, the only ones risking a ban would be me or the guy hosting it (who is anonymeous) - it should be completely safe for you guys ;) Just don't spam it in Orgrimmar ofc.

I just skipped through most of it, so my apologies if I missed it.

GM's or officers from the appropriate guilds will be asked, when we get closer, of an approximate number of people from their guild joining the private server shootings - I will then be handing out an appropriate number of usernames/passwords and it'll be up to the GM to distribute these amongst you - at least that's the way I'm figuring out it's going to work, still discussing this with the host of the server :) Anyhow, you'll get the acces in good time so we can set up your chars for the movie, you'll prob be having a couple of different looking 60's (a NE hunter, an undead rogue, your normal self (pretty much) and a human paladin amongst some).

Anyhow, it's going to be quite fun! :)
