I need a new headset
« on: April 03, 2009, 03:07:31 pm »
I need to get a new headset/headphones, as my ones have been slowly dying.

I need something that has good sound/mic quality, is comfortable (as i will be at a 4 day lan soon) and is relatively cheap.

Recommendations would be appreciated.

Good headphones + separate microphone!

Can't beat good headphones for listening to music also.
Now I run a tech website.

As a headset, don't know a good microphone though!

I have no idea what the difference between them is. I presume the one with the higher number is better in some way *shrug*

This is a very handy one, not least because the little usb adapter that it comes with has its own little sound card and works with other headsets (at least sennheiser ones. Not tried others, but it's a normal 2xjack - mic and headphone - to usb).

Very good quality, too.

EDIT* Don't buy it at that link ofc, if you poke around on amazon and all the usual suspects for online shopping you will find a much better price, I just linked the product page because of the info on it.

I just found this topic so I dont have to make a new one. :)

Im using a Philips Headphones (http://www.accessorystore.co.uk/acatalog/Philips_SBC_HP200_HI_FI_Headphones.html) whit a Zalman mic (http://zalman.com/ENG/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=210) atm, it was perfect before I bought a laptop and moved to Denmark. The headphones left band broke when we moved, but a little glue solved the problem. Few weeks ago I got a new chair whit wheels and noticed the headphones cable too long and when I move forward or back whit the chair the cable just stuck in a wheels.
Usually it happen when I need to focus on something like make a lot of TPS because shann is taking aggro in a next seconds and its really hard whit that head position. :)

I just decided to buy a new headphones and would like to get a gamer stuff whit a build in mic whit short cable (not more than 1m). Yesterday I found SteelSeries 5H v2 (http://www.steelseries.com/int/products/audio/5hv2/information) for a relatively good price. Any1 have experience whit this Headphones? SteelSeries is a good trademark?

I wait for the experiences and opinions. :)

I love the headphones/microphone combo... you get a better quality of headphone, and microphones are so cheap.

I don't know of any headphones that come with such a short cable... 1m would be pretty useless for most computer setups! Just tie the cable up behind your computer or something.

If you like music, it's worth buying some good headphones, then just use your Zalman mic (or another, whatever!)

As Dell said headphones + good mic is always better (unless u can't be arsed with it for lan and shit). As Kawe recommended Sennheiser I can't add much, you can try with some of their DJ models since they have insane sound isolation. I use HD 280 pro due to their huge frequency response 8-25000 Hz, you won't miss anything with that!

When it comes to microphones I am clueless, I use some prehistoric logitech crap :P

I go for reference headphones -- I own some Grado RS2s. Other headphones tend to bias in various frequencies. 'Bassy' Sony headphones, for example (and DJ headphones are often quite bassy too). Reference headphones are neutral -- and make your music sound just as it was mixed/mastered :)

Though... often music is mastered for listening to in cars, and that sounds like shit!

Only reason that DJ headphones are "bassy" is because those bass sounds are actually there but that shouldn't worry you since most of sound cards have equalisers so you can lower them. Only actual problem with DJ headphones is that you won't hear anything that comes from your surrounding (girlfriend whining etc) but that might be handy too :P
