Wow, very informative post.

What vids are you talking about, the utter shit one they released in December that showed 80% developer hype talking, 15% artwork graphics and 5% actual ingame footage with abysmal animations that looked like something from Xbox1 times?

Well the new one from Tuesday is already a huge improvement, but still around 0% informative value when they show some alpha graphics studies.

Also: "For whatever reason, when people took the RPG and went to make the massively multiplayer RPG, they left out the fourth pillar - story," Yeah right, cause WoW has no story and lore at all :D

Well, Bioware = awesome, Star Wars license = awesome, so hopefully that'll become an awesome game. So far all they showed thou was hype, which reminds me a lot of what the Warhammer guys did (which is also an awesome license, and see how well that worked out...)

As Goza says...

Bioware + Star Wars license should mean something good. But it could just as easily be another SWG, or just another MMO to be crushed by the WoW juggernaut.

Even WAR, which was widely considered a good MMO with some pretty good implementation and a little good innovation, has been utterly trampled by the release of Lich King and, less specifically, WoW's incumbency.

Bioware would have to pull off something pretty spectacular to avoid failure here, and something phenomenal if Blizz were to start talking up their "next-gen" MMO when SW:TOR is nearing completion.

Guess we have to wait and see.

Well bioware has potential to become the new blizzard. I don't think wow will crash it like it crashed WAR. Fantasy games tend to look alike and people don't want to play an incomplete fantasy game with no end content and such when there is a giant polished hit like wow. Starwars universe is not really like the fantasy one. (I heard warcraft was "inspired" by warhammer universe).  prefer sci-fci mmos to fantasy ones and there isn't one around except eve which has a class of its own. For the record swg was pretty fun. Sony fucked it up by leveling system.
Yes vids are not really informative but graphics are very nice. Animations are meh but they didn't seem repetitive. By Story they mean choices that effects gameplay. I don't know how they are gonna make it prolly like phasing or one person instances but that would kinda hurt the mmo feeling.

Yes, there is definitely a gap for a sci-fi MMO, and that will probably be taken by this game.

But I don't think people play an MMO because of its genre -- the genre is just an interesting side-effect.

I don't play WoW because it's a fantasy setting (and I bet you the 12 million players have played games like Star Craft, or Counter Strike, or ... ), I play it because it's a damn good game -- and because I have too much invested to stop.

The other question is if there is simply any more MMO players out there...

Hehe.

Wasn't City of Heroes modern-day'ish? And The Matrix, I guess.

And the reason very few games are 'modern day' is because people play online games for escapism -- to become someone else, just for a little while. It's incredibly pleasant for some people, and people find it relaxing too.

A Vampire MMO would be very good!

1930s mmo. With... er... monsters. And other cool stuff.

Seriously though, I'd love a steampunk mmo.

I agree that there's somewhat of a space for a sci-fi MMO, although EVE-Online is a pretty good contender if you just look at the genre. I really like it, but a lot don't as it really is mainly a click-through-menus-while-you-wait-six-months-for-your-skills-to-train-in-real-time-kindda-game.

That said, I'm also pretty sure that while it might be a good game, it won't by any means have a chance against WoW, in the sense that it will steal tons and tons of players form it. I seriously doubt anything will within the next five-ten years.

As for WoW being inspired by Warhammer: Warhammer is inspired from what? Dungeons and Dragons? Which is inspired by Tolkien perhaps? Which is again inspired by? A mixture of old european folklore? It's not where you get your inspiration, it's what you do with your inspiration that matters.  ;)
